Count us in for the house party. Just hope that some of you can stay up a little bit later in the morning this year. It's amazing to see what a few more hours does to your body rhythm...it just skips a day!!!!

Just need some floor space for our bodies to lie.

Food will also come along with us. See...Sins...the mussels did not even smell. Maybe a fish dish would be nice...scallpos with haddock and cream sauce.

Thanks.

Doryman and his mate.

I'm in, and will need somewhere (hopefully quiet, unless I'm one of the noisy people) to sleep.

Tell Charley to bring something that doesn't go fuzzy as it ages, or doesn't get a chance to age. Chocolate works for me.

Tom and I will be there -- and will need a bed.

If mussels are on the menu, please make sure there's nothing else on the menu that has come into contact with them -- I'm VERY allergic! (And you really don't want to be around the reaction.)

I, for one, second Linn's post. Not because I'm allergic, but because we do not need any more concert goers rushing out the door for emergencies.

You're right there Kendall, I do love mussels, but love clams better. I remember as a kid, we wouldn't pick a mussel, rather clam a different beach or another side of a river before eating that scrap food. Times have changed. As a youngerster I remember no one would think of eating shark either or alot of the other fish finds that the commerical industry has taught some of folks to now like.
But some of us will eat anything, including lobsters.

Are you all serious about this....

How can you think this way when you all know what lobsters eat.....and if you have not pulled a trap and found "claw de toilet papier"....you can guess!!!!

I have not eaten one of these things since I was five years old and as for hotdogs.....since I was 18 and working for the USDI in Boston.

So mussels are really not that bad...they filter better and faster than clams and are actually cleaner. Ask the dorymate's wife...she published the original papers on the "red tide" in 1979 after years of research through UMass and Woods Hole.

I believe they even ate the head off of JC in Mary's back yard.

Anyway...need a bed or spot or floor space for the night.

Will bring some normal food....from me what would you expect???

Nice picture Bente....what a cute couple those guys are!!!!

Doryman and his mate.

We certainly never ate mussels when I was growing up on the Maine coast. But that was because no one told us they were good to eat. They are delicious and unlike clams apparently do not have stomachs. I'll gobble up as many as I can get my claws on.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, that was probably my problem -- I used to love blue mussels. Lots of garlic and wine. First time I got sick, I thought it was a bad mussel. Second time I got sick, I thought I'd gotten a bad marinated mussel. Third time...

Well, if I HAVE to be allergic to some kind of seafood, I guess I can live with a mussel allergy. If it had been oysters, or shrimp, or lobster, or scallops, it would have been very, ver\y disappointing.

I don't want to see Linn (or anybody else) yak. As for me, I used to think shellfish were disgusting. I ate a mussel cooked with tomatoes and basil at a cookout, and I ate a load more. I was blissfully unaware of the snob factor and thought they had a much better consistancy and taste than clams, so THERE.

But how do Peter's compare to Bertha's? (Undoubtedly futile attempt to return to the subject of John and the house concert.)

I'm sure this will be a spectacular house concert. We are all very fortunate to be part of a great circle of music and friendship. We got to see John and Tony and crew in Portsmouth just before Christmas and it was simply an evening that will not be forgotten. John's diversity of music and talent is truly remarkable. I hope he brings his hurdy-gurdy along with him to do a few tunes as he did in Watertown a few years ago. Really an interesting piece. Looking forward to the evening. It will be very interesting.

I wonder how (or why) the first lobster was ever eaten -- seems hard to imagine someone looking at it and thinking -- now that will be yummy boiled alive and then dipped into butter!!! But they are so good.

I'm a yes for the John Roberts concert - Tom's iffy - Mary, if you run out of space or your roof isn't fixed, we can put some folks up (as you know it is snug and comfy by the fire!!!!!). Let me know what you would like brung to eat!!! Charlie, your cheesecake has made me a dessert fan - it was fabulous.......

See you all then......

Would LOVE to try cockles! I've eaten plenty of periwinkles ("winkles"), but no opportunity to try cockles.

Actually, what I really wish, Carole, is that Tom and I could pop over for a weekend or something. Would that travel were THAT convenient!!!

We'll make it sometime, I hope!

I'll have to check if I can get the sweetened octopus candy (really -- dried and slightly sweetened) sometime. Might make a good crunchy dessert for the lobster boil!

I hated mussels because I was raised in Southern California where
they were vile--- and used as bait.

Then one night I was dining at the Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, PA,
and the menu included a lobster dish with Prince Edward Island
mussels. Well, I wanted the lobster, but not the mussels, but tried
one--then another---then another---then the rest---then the lobster.

I've since discovered that at $2.50/lb they're the bargain of the
century.

Live and learn.

I sometimes have mussels in garlic butter for lunch - absolute heaven and very reasonably priced if you do it yourself using the basic ingredients.

The mess I cooked for the lobster boil two years ago was vile so vile smelling I had to leave the house. People (read: Jacqui) ate them. I watched in horror.

Any new additions to John's concerts?
And as to inviting anyone - I don't. If you know of someone who might enjoy a concert, feel free to ask them or direct them to Mudcat. Jacqui distributed fliers with upcoming dates at Deb Cowan's concert as an additional reminder.

Never noticed a vile smell from cooking mussels--- I boil a LOT
of water, and then only cook them lightly--- PEIs are so small
they're done in 2 minutes. Maybe that's the trick.

Carole - I'm leaving from Heathrow but the bags are so full of booty that there may not be room for all I want to take back! Sorry about that.

If mussels are cooked with butter and garlic, no added water, the only smell that comes across to me is the garlic.

You'll get an 'official' answer, I'm sure.

Until then...
Bring yourself. We usually have enough food and stuff for about twice the number of people. Optional wine, single malt, chocolate or ...well, Mary had better fill in the 'or' because she knows what food we'll be eating.

We sing while John wows us, then we sing after. You don't HAVE to sing anything, but if you do, we try for traditional, really old 'hits' or modern 'folk'. Sing what you know or nearly know.

I look forward to meeting you!

Hey, Anglo: Heave Bertha's mussels!
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry ...but there's a nice parody awaiting.

Maeve

Mary usually puts up a list of what people have offered to bring closer to the date. Being relatively close and with time to prepare food I usually try and do a main course and a desert, but cooking is a hobby for me so I just enjoy doing that. Some are not so keen on cooking and may bring bread or nibbles of one kind or another.

Mary makes sure that there is a well stocked supply of beverages but the odd bottle of wine is accepted with pleasure.

Mostly the pleasure is in bringing yourself and joining in the evening.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Deb - I have saved spots for you and yours and will be really disappointed if you don't make it.
I bought a large supply of flour tortillas on sale so I plan on filling them - ground beef, chopped onions and tomatoes, refried beans, sour cream, etc
That's a start.
