Subject: Lyr Add: SHE'S SOMEONE'S GRANDMOTHER (Lu Mitchell) From: Stewart Date: 04 Mar 07 - 02:51 PM SHE'S SOMEONE'S GRANDMOTHER -- Lu Mitchell ^^^ sung to the tune of "The Mountains of Mourne" There's a little old lady who lives up the street. Her home is so tidy, her house is so neat, And no one could imagine, though they would try, What this little old lady was doing on the sly. She's someone's grandmother with hair snowy white, But the FBI's hot on her trail tonight. She's down in Brazil with the janitor Hank And the loot from the Kugelsville National Bank. The Kugelsville's Bank held an audit today And I mean to tell you, there was all Hell to pay. She filched all the money in tiny amounts From over a hundred dormant accounts. Children all loved her and grown-ups would vie For a taste of her old fashioned blueberry pie. No one suspected, not even Hank, She was juggling the books at the Kugelsville Bank. She worked twenty years without a vacation, The president said, "that was real dedication." On this subject, she remained very mute; She simply smiled sweetly, and piled up the loot. She gave to the church, and no thoughts were higher, A voice like an angel was her's from the choir. From her picture window, there glows no more light, She's dining in Rio Janeiro tonight. I heard Lu Mitchell sing this when I lived in Dallas in the late '60s. It's based on a true story. I recall reading about it in the newspaper there. Cheers, S. in Seattle |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kugelsville Bank From: Stewart Date: 04 Mar 07 - 03:09 PM This was recorded by Lu Mitchell in 1966 (Lu Mitchell Records) on her LP "Sing In With Lu". There were some good original songs on that: Planned Parenthood Lullaby Chant of the Rat Race Coffee, Tea, or Milk, Sir The Gamekeeper's Song Norman Vincent Peale Down With Topless Bathing Suits Little Boxes The TV Lament She's Someone's Grandmother I Am An Anglican They're Moving Father's Grave to Build a Freeway Rhythm and Blues with Cardinal Spellman "'The Gamekeeper's Song,' 'I Am An Anglican,' and 'Norman Vincent Peale' were collected by Lu from a drunken driver during a traffic jam on the freeway. Lu sneaked into the back seat of his car and taped him as he sang in quiet desperation. Most of the others were written by Lu and the ideas expressed are her own. If one detects overtones of hostility, malice, and anxiety, one has a reasonably good copy of the record." She had a sharp wit and was a good singer. Does anyone know about Lu now? I did of course search the DT and forum before requesting the lyrics. Thanks again! |
Subject: ADD: Kuglesburg Bank (author's version) From: Stewart Date: 04 Mar 07 - 07:34 PM Okay, I just got an email from Lu Mitchell which may clear up some of the problems with the title: Hi Stewart: The song "Someone's Grandmother" got a new title later on, although I wrote it in the 60's. It is now called "The Kuglesburg Bank." Here are the lyrics that may differ slightly from the original. Thanks for writing. Lu Here are the lyrics she sent: KUGLESBURG BANK (Lu Mitchell) There's a little old lady who lives up the street Her house is so tidy, her house is so neat You can't imagine, though hard you might try What this little old lady was doing on the sly CHORUS She's someone's grandmother with hair snowy white But the F.B.I.'s hot on her trail tonight She's down in Brazil with the janitor Hank And the loot from the Kuglesburg National Bank The Kuglesburg Bank held an audit today And I mean to tell you there was all hell to pay She'd filched all the money in tiny amounts From a hundred and forty-three dormant accounts Children all loved her and grownups would vie For a taste of her old-fashioned blueberry pie No one suspected, not even Hank She was juggling the books at the Kuglesburg Bank She gave to the church, no thoughts were higher Her voice like an angel rang out from the choir But from her picture window there glows no more light She's dining in Rio de Janeiro tonight Cheers, S. in Seattle |

Subject: Lyr ADD: The Kugelsville/Kuglesburg Bank From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Feb 19 - 12:50 AM Here's a nice performance of the song, called "Kugelsburg Bank" here: Here's the Charlie King recording: Here are the Digital Tradition lyrics, which are a pretty sloppy transcription of the Charlie King recording: SOMEBODY'S GRANDMOTHER (Charlie King/Lu Mitchell) There's a quiet old lady who lives up the street Her house is so tidy, her house is so neat. None would suspect it, how hard they might try What this little old lady was doin' on the sly. Somebody's grandmother with hair snowy white The FBI's hot on her trail tonight She's down in Brazil with the janitor Hank And the loot from the Kuglesville National Bank Now the Kuglesville bank had an audit today And I'm here to tell you there was all Hell to pay She'd filched all the money in tiny amounts From over a thousand dormant accounts. Twenty three years without a vacation The president said it showed great dedication But on that subject, she remained rather mute She simply smiled sweetly as she piled up the loot Children all loved her and grownups would vie For a piece of her homemade blueberry pie None suspected, not even Hank She was juggling the books at the National Bank Now she gave to her church, and no thoughts were higher A voice like an angel was hers in the choir In her picture window there shines no more light She is dining in Rio de Janerio tonight ----------------------------------------------------------------- @aging @outlaw @work Copyright Charlie King 1982, Lu Mitchell (words) 1966 sung by Faith Petrick filename[ SOMGRAND TUNE FILE: SOMGRAND CLICK TO PLAY DC Popup Midi Player

Subject: RE: ADD: Kugelsville/Kuglesburg Bank (Lu Mitchell)^^^ From: Stewart Date: 05 Feb 19 - 12:30 PM Thanks Joe. I discussed this in my article "Borrowed Tunes and Words" in the Feb/March issue of NW HOOT. The tune is from "Bendemeer’s Stream" by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) who borrowed the tune from an earlier Irish air. The recording by the Ferryboat Musicians, which you posted above, is much better than that by Charlie King. I don't see how Charlie King gets copyright when it is Thomas Moore's tune and Lu Mitchell's words. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
