29 May 12 - 01:21 PM (#3356884) Subject: Art Thieme in hospital, but better? 5-12 From: katlaughing In my own challenges, of late, I missed out on several emails from Chris about Art. It sounds scary but they progress to better. Thought you all would want to know. Here they are: 22 May 2012 To update all on Dad's status, his health has taken a strange turn. Over the past several weeks, his mental state has been deteriorating. While cognitive issues are part of M.S., this extends beyond this. Over the past three weeks, he has gone from lucid to completely incoherent and delusional. He has been in the ER twice since Thursday. He was admitted this morning at 4:30 a.m. They intend to keep him there at least overnight and are continuing to run tests in search of a reason. There is an infection they are currently treating with antibiotics, but it seems insufficient reason for this level of confusion. I'll post as I know more. As of midnight last night not a lot had changed. Dad was still in an Observational Unit and will hopefully have a room by now. They tried to do an MRI twice but were unsuccessful. They are trying again this morning. CT and blood work came back normal. He's getting fluids and is being treated for his urinary infection. Will update if this morning brings any changes. Dad's MRI is still too early to tell, but it looks clear as does the EEG. Final report late tomorrow or early tomorrow, but they are concentrating on the infection as the most likely cause. According to the nurse, he is currently able to understand that he is in a hospital. Hopefully this trend continues as the infection diminishes. 23 May - The MRI came back clear. The issue is likely completely due to the infection they are currently treating. His appetite is back as well. He has a slight fever now which means his body is fighting back, and he has a better indication of where he is at and why. "Pick away on the ol' banjo. Keep the guitar strumming. Put more water in the soup. There's better times a'coming." 26 May Dad's back at the nursing home. His mental state isn't greatly improved but his infection is cleared up. However he's got a staff infection now. Going over there tomorrow and will send an update after. Chris 29 May Spent the morning with my folks Sunday. Dad is more aware, but there is much that isn't there. He's no longer on antibiotics, but I don't know why yet because of the holiday. I'm calling a couple of his doctors today for updates. I also talked to physical therapy asking for them to target a couple key areas. I'll find out more on the staff infection, but I was told by the hospital that the case wasn't severe. When I was there, he wasn't running a fever. If you visit, please be aware that he is easily confused and his emotions may change drastically from moment to moment. He has a lot of difficulty talking on the phone, and it is hard to understand what he is saying more often than not. Mom is holding up fairly well. She has her own physical issues besides the mental strain. She'd doing what she can to care for him. That's all for now. Chris I'm sure any good thoughts, etc. would be appreciated. kat |

I was just thinking Art was doing well & was asking folks if anyone had been to see him at Crystal Lake yet. He was much in mind at a festival last weekend where Cathy Barton & Dave Para were some of the stars. We talked about Art & I mentioned him in introducing some of the songs I did in the sing arounds after the concert. I keep praying for Art & Carol to have health and happiness on the same scale as the love people have for them. Love & prayers from Joanne in Cleveland |

29 May 12 - 03:59 PM (#3356944) Subject: RE: Art Thieme in hospital & @ home better? May 2012 From: Waddon Pete Thanks for updating us with the news, Kat. Getting older is supposed to be a tine for quiet reflection, doing all those things you never had time for before and sitting on the porch, drinking your coffee and watching all the other poor souls going to work; not for this sort of thing! However, I'm sure that Art will battle this one through with the same strong will that he has battled other things in his life. Keep with him Chris and give him the love he needs to win through (not that you need any telling on that score!) Let us hope that we all have someone to lean on when we get to a similar situation. Best wishes, Peter |

10 Jun 12 - 11:24 AM (#3361653) Subject: RE: Art Thieme General Update thread -June 2012 From: katlaughing In the email this morning: Hello All, Just an update on Dad with some good news. His infection has been brought under control again. With this, his mental faculties have mostly returned. We're heading over tomorrow (Sunday) with the grandkids for a visit. He is at a point where a phone call would be welcome, but please try to keep them somewhat spaced apart. While he is doing much better, he is still often confused. Do not be surprised if he is not as coherent as he was the last time you may have talked to him, and he still has some odd interpretations on things. We have an appointment with his neurologist this coming week, but I do not expect any great insights into his condition. Still, we'll see what they have to offer based on the tests that have been done in this past month. His sense of humor is coming back to, but he sometimes gets frustrated when he can't remember the line he wanted to use. The best medicine right now is love, friends and family which he has in abundance. He does much better during the day than at night, so calls during the day are going to be the best. Physical therapy has been working with him too helping both with motor skills and cognitive thought and articulating those thoughts. Thank you all for your patience through this. It is hard to know what to say when I don't know what is happening myself. He includes their phone number. If anyone needs it, please PM me. Thanks, kat |

He sounded a tad weary but in good spirits. We kept it short but I think he welcomed the call. He said he was thinking he might could still have some fun with a banjo and recalled Fleming Brown telling him that playing banjo is frequently a "hit-or-miss thing." He also recalled Jim Brewer figuring out how to play without a finger that had been badly damaged. He said he was having trouble sometimes finding the right words, but he sounded still pretty sharp to me. Here's a bit of Art's banjo picking from That's the Ticket! The Santa Fe Trail —BK |

09 Jul 12 - 10:19 AM (#3373952) Subject: RE: Art Thieme New Update-9 July 2012-in hospital From: katlaughing Sent late last night, from Chris: Tomorrow Dad goes back into surgery. They are working to remove dead tissue from inside a deep sore. The placement of the sore makes it difficult, but not extremely dangerous. The doctor feels that he will be able to make the adjustments necessary and clean out the wound. Then we have a long period of time where he will hopefully be recovering. Again, the infection is the prime suspect regarding his mental state. As his fever goes up or the infection grows, so does his confusion. We are hopeful that we can get him to the point where he can comprehend that he has a new grand-daughter and meet her for the first time. Mom is getting a ride to visit him during the day. I'm going over after work. Tomorrow is Dad's 71st birthday. Won't be able to bring a cake and candles as he's on oxygen and a liquid diet. Will do the best I can. I'll follow up tomorrow with an update on his condition post-op. Chris Let's hope by the end of this day, Art gets the birthday gift of successful surgery and clearing out of all infection! |

11 Jul 12 - 11:15 AM (#3374900) Subject: VISITING INSTRUCTIONS From: katlaughing These came from Chris this morning: Hello, If folks are in the area and want to visit Dad, that would be wonderful. There are a few things you should know if you do want to visit. First off, he has periods where all he does is sleep. It is luck of the draw on his state. He has moments of comprehension, but these quickly dissolve. Still, he is making jokes and pulling memories out of the ol' memory bank. He's got plenty of both in reserve. They may be moving Dad back to the nursing home, so you may want to send any cards there rather than the hospital. I have no idea how soon that will be yet. He is physically unable to answer the phone. A nurse brings the phone to him to speak to Mom, but that is a hard thing to ask them to do on a regular basis. Also, due to this and other infections he has or has had, you are required to wear a gown and gloves to go into the room. Please check in with the nurse in charge before going in. That said, the staff at the hospital is wonderful and warm. I have yet to encounter a single person there from doctors down that didn't meet that standard. So here's the info: Centegra Hospital 4201 West Medical Center Drive McHenry, IL (815) 344-5000 Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks to all. Chris AND, TA-DA!: And in the shuffle, this announcement never made it to press. Many of you know the details. For those that don't: Art and Carol have a new grand-daughter (Daisy Snow.) With all that is going on, she hasn't met them yet. Can't wait for that day. She was born June 21 at 11:18PM. She was 8lbs 9oz and just shy of 21 inches. Mom and baby are doing great, and she's already putting on weight. Another cute and wonderful little girl. For those with a scorecard, that makes grand-baby number 5 for this branch of the Thieme clan. She will be good medicine for them both, as well as their other granddaughters. kat |

You should know that I woke up thinking about you this morning. My alarm was set to NPR, and the very first thing I heard was a story about 1,600 turtles being released from a Georgia turtle farm (vandals broke the fences) and making the great escape to nearby waterways. The idea of 1,600 turtles making a cross-country getaway was quite a picture--and it put me in mind of your wonderful Great Turtle Drive story. Thanks for that--and so much else. Sending lots of love, Kathy Westra And here's a link to the turtle story: turtle story |

03 Sep 12 - 01:53 AM (#3399328) Subject: RE: Art Thieme - temp. @ nursing home 30 July 2012 From: SaulBro I'm a little late joining this thread, I'm afraid I don't get to check in at Mudcat too often. Visited Art & Carol at the nursing home in Crystal Lake on July 1st. Art was able to chat a bit, though he was obviously uncomfortable and had to nod out (fall asleep) often. He had not been able to kick that infection, which was soon to require hospitalization July 4th as Chris has reported above. I was glad I got the chance to visit while I was in the Chicago area. It was nice to get to know Carol, whom I had only met briefly years ago. It's a rough situation for them both, but at least they have each other and the rest of their family nearby. My thoughts and love go out to them. Saul Broudy Philadelphia, PA USA |

04 Sep 12 - 03:04 PM (#3400070) Subject: RE: Art Thieme - missed phone call from Art! 21Aug2012 From: katlaughing My deepest apologies, folks. I feel like a complete idiot. We've been having trouble with our Internet based home phone which we are dumping after the contract expires anyway. So, I thought I had told everyone to call the cell phone from now on, but I missed a few people, including Art. Today I just happened to check messages on that phone now that it's working again and to my great joy there was one from Art! His voice seemed stronger and he sounded very coherent. He said that he really misses the people at Mudcat, to send you all greetings and thank you's. He said he has a pressure sore which has been very very hard to get rid of which we knew about, but what I don't think any of us knew, which he said today, is he's having to spend almost all of his time flat on his back in bed. He wanted us all to know why he was "out of commission." Needless to say I phoned back. I got the answer machine, left a message, and hope I hear back from him soon as I left the correct phone number. Anyway, I am sure cards, letters, and anything else you might think of that could be entertaining while flat on one's back **BG**, would be greatly appreciated. (Maybe a poster to put on the ceiling?:-) Again, my apologies. I will do a better job of keeping track from now on. In the meantime, may I say it has really lifted my heart today to hear Art's voice and news. At least we know something now. luvyakat |

Perhaps a nice poster-sized photo of those eagles that nest in the moss along the locks up and down the Mississippi. D |

06 Sep 12 - 04:28 PM (#3400983) Subject: RE: Art Thieme - in good spirits on phone! 4 Sept 2012 From: katlaughing Oh boy! Let's all do the happy dance! Art just called and, as Mark Ross said, he sounds great. He does have to stay flat on his back, but they let him up for three hours per day. They have seen their new grandbaby several times and of course love her and her four sisters very much. I got some good laughs out of him when I told about the poster and the comments, especially yours Dan about the nesters. :-) He said one of the main reasons he called was to tell me how much Mudcat and all of its denizens have meant to him. He sends his love to all and his thank you's for all the good thoughts etc. that we have sent. I told him we'd keep it up. He made sure that I understood they are living in a nursing home and while he has such a great attitude and they make the best of it, the room is still small. the pressure sore is down to a very small size now so I told him soon it will be healed and maybe down the road there may be a way for them to get back into a more assisted living type of situation. I don't know if it's a possibility, but he certainly liked the idea. As he said though the most important thing is they have each other, he and Carol, and they are being cared for as well as being closer to their grandchildren and son and daughter-in-law. Phew! I think I've been holding my breath a bit on this one. Sure feels good to have heard his voice and know that he is really doing better. Three cheers to us all and best of everything for Art and Carol! luvyakat typos fixed...voice recognition software is so much fun!:-( |

He sounded to be in good spirits, although a bit weary of being confined to bed most of the time until his pressure sore heals. His greatest joy is visiting with their grandchildren. He was looking forward to a visit today from a good friend, Tom Martin-Erickson, long-time host of Simply Folk on Wisconsin Public Radio. He misses being able to check in here with all of us and hopes to be able to get back on the computer soon. Of course I told him how much he is loved and missed here. —BK |

20 Nov 12 - 08:26 PM (#3439575) Subject: RE: Art Thieme-working on getting connected-misses us From: olddude This is a very very good notebook, I had to load linux on it because I have no spare copies of windows, however, it is even easier to use then windows and I will supply full instructions so no stress. Just click connect and rock on ..also you have no need to worry about virus or spyware due to the op system. Now can someone send Art some decent headphones so he can listen to music. I don't have a spare set ... and if you got a spare webcam please send that also ... love Dan |

If someone has them please let me know before I go buy him some. touch pad on the notebook but I will send a mouse along because I know he is more use to a mouse. Sharp sharp screen. love it .. perfect .. we need to get him back with us asap. No fun being sick without your friends around love ya Art |

21 Nov 12 - 02:54 PM (#3439984) Subject: RE: Art Thieme-working on getting connected-misses us From: olddude It should be there on Saturday, it went out today ... it is a dandy and I loaded it up ... Now if folks want to send him CD's he will have lots to listen to ... I forgot to include the external mouse but the touch pad is perfect. If it is an issue someone just let me know and I will send it .. I also have a spare battery but the one in there runs for over 2 hrs off plug so it is in good shape. Again just let me know and I will ship that also if he wants. It is Linux but very very simple to use, easier than windows, there is a menu on the left side just click internet, enter the one time security key for the wireless and bam he is on .. everything is configured. We need a webcam as the company that gave it to me doesn't allow them on their notebooks so if anyone got an external webcam let me know or I will just buy him one next week Thank you all will be great to get Art back with us. Thank you BK so kind of you love Dan |

He has the notebook,Dan, and all of the stuff you sent, too, BK. Thrilled, amazed and he says people keep sending him stuff. He sounded so pleased. Dan, Chris has your contact info and may call. Apparently something isn't compatible with what's available, but he is going to remedy that. Art was vague because he doesn't understand it, but he is so grateful and really excited about getting back on. He was being taken for a shower when I called. That's it for now. 28 Nov 12 - 10:46 AM (#3443695) Subject: New tech question from Chris From: katlaughing My apologies for not posting this sooner. I was going through a rough patch and just didn't see any email for awhile. This is from Chris from around the 20th: Hey Kat, This is amazing. Can't thank you and all the Mudcatters enough. Been busy as hell, and will get on there to send thanks personally. I'm skilled enough to get him set up, and I work at a school, so I'm going to pick the brains in the Special Ed and Tech department for ideas on how to make this friendly. There is an item that I really want to get for my folks as both of them are having a harder time with this. Dad is getting to the point where he almost can't answer and sometimes can't hold the phone. If there's anyone out there with a bead on a voice activated conference/speaker phone, please let me know. They are not cheap so I don't want to take up a collection. Just hoping someone might know where to get them at a discount or know where there might be a spare. Sorry to ask. You all have done so much. Thanks, Chris I know they were over there last Friday as Art was so pleased to have all five grandkids there. Soon, folks, soon. luvyakat |
