Lyr Req: Edelweiss (hymns to the tune of)

Can anyone help me out? We're getting ready for our first Jail Ministry service this next Saturday and I wanted an easy prayer chorus (acoustic guitar accompaniment.) Years ago we used to sing something "churchy" to the tune of "Edelweiss" and I've misplaced the words. I've asked around and I guess hot shots got up in arms about using that tune (and many churches were using it at that time) so we stopped. Call me a rebel.........I'd really like to use that for the service - guess we'll be in the right place to do something "illegal!" Anyway, ever heard of the lyrics I'm referring to?

Sorry, can't help with that one, but we found doing 'And can it be' a good choice, especially the verse that mentions 'long my impprisoned spirit lay'. Made them realise that just because the body was incarcerated, didn't mean the spirit had to be as well....

Prison grade needs to be right though, we were in short term, young/first offenders. Doing the same for the long term, violent crimes which was the other prison we visited, might have been a bit less well accepted....

Sorry, can't help, I hope it's better than Cliff Richard singing the Lord's Prayer to Old Lang Syne, gotta be the worst of a notoriously bad tradition of Christmas granny-present songs!

////Sounds great. Any way you could share the tune and lyrics with me? I like the concept. This is a county jail and not a prison, so most are fairly short-term.

////HA! Thanks for the BIG laugh! Hugs, PattyG

Should be available in most hymnbooks, esp. the more modern ones or the Methodist Hymnbook. Maybe we should start a website for hymns... Graham Kendricks not allowed... (Sorry, sang Shine Jesus Shine six times in two hours for a request service once, aaaargh, almost as bad as Jesu Joy of Mans' Desiring three times in one day at three separate weddings....)

And can it be that I should gain,
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love, how can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

(Rpt last 2 lines for tune called Sagina)

'Tis mystery all, The immortal dies:
Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the first born seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all, let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more!

He left his father's throne above,
So free, so infinite his grace -
Emptied himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth and followed thee!

No condemnation now I dread!
Jesus and all in him is mine!
Alive in him, the living head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown through Christ my own.

Written by Charles Wesley (1707 - 1788), it is copyright free, as is the tune Sagina, by Thomas Campbell (1825 - 1876), but I can't work out how to get that to you. Try your local library if you can.

Good luck with it, it is fairly jolly, and great if you can do the harmonies.

Thanks for the info, Liz. I appreciate your efforts. Ironically, I'm a Methodist and have a couple of hymnals here at home!

Well what are you doing bothering us Anglicans for tunes we nicked off you in the first place?!!!

And Roger the Skiffler is right, anything is better than the Millenium Our Father by Sir Cliff - take back his knighthood this minute!! Even I could have written it so that it actually fitted the tune. The concept is strange, the execution of it is downright weird and the phrasing of it is diabolical!! All it needed was a little thought behind the words... But then if the Pope can do a CD of the Rosary, then what is there to stop anyone doing the whole of the prayer book to Hooked on Classics???

Good luck with the hymns.

I've heard and even sung this one to Edelweiss, but I can't for the life of me remember it. I think some of the lines went "Lord most high..." blah blah blah - maybe this will jog someone's memory.

Our girls learned this in scouts, and for the past 15 years or so, we've sung it in place of the traditional grace at Thanksgiving dinner.

Bless our friends, bless our food,
Come, Oh Lord, and sit with us.
Make our talk grow with peace,
Come with Your love to surround us.

Friendship and peace, may you bloom and grow,
    Bloom and grow forever.
Bless our friends, bless our food,
    Bless our homeland forever.

Ah yes, was just about to post the Eidelweiss Grace, and see I was beaten to it.. Our last line went thus:

Bless y/our family forever.

Bit more inclusive and possibly a little less jingoistic, especially when sung by a large group of guides from all over the world.

Here they are. They are the correct words. Have fun

Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright, you look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss, bless my homeland forever...

In German

Edelweiß, Edelweiß,
Du grüßt mich jeden Morgen,
Sehe ich dich,
Freue ich mich,
Und vergeß meine Sorgen.
Schmücke das Heimatland,
Schön und weiß,
Blühest wie die Sterne.
Edelweiß, Edelweiß,
Ach, ich hab dich so gerne.

Hi Chris, sorry, I haven't come across it. IF you check thread 1920, someone remembers doing one in a church, but said the "copyright police", whoever they are, got after them to remove it.

Chris, the words you have quoted cropped up in a few pages I found doing a google search. It is sung to the tune "Edelweiss" and that appeart to be all there is to it. It often comes up under a heading "benediction".

I also found this other one (on a scouts page I think - quite a few of the pages I visited were):

(Tune: Edelweiss)
Thank you Lord, On this day, for our many good blessings,
Thank you Lord, On this day for our many close friendships.
Glory to God may you hear our prayers,
guide us on forever,

Jon Thank you Lord, on this day for our blessings.

Lord we ask As we go into all of life's pathways,
That each day We may know you are calling us onward,
Glory to God may you hear our prayers,
lead us on forever,
So each day we may know you are leading us onward.

Grant us Lord, On this day deeper insights and challenge,
That each day We grow in faith, and knowledge and wisdom,
Glory to God may you hear our prayer, guide us on forever,
Grant us Lord on this day deeper insights and challenge.

Jon

All Grace Lyrics

Phi U Forever
(Tune: Edelweiss)

Phi Upsilon Omicron, your light shines brightly before us.
Guides our way, through the day, inspiration and pleasure.
Scholarship, leadership, service too,
Are our goals together.
Phi Upsilon Omicron, lives in our hearts forever.

DELTA LOVE
(Tune: Edelweiss)

Delta love, Delta love
Ties that bind us forever,
Friendships true,
love for you,
Ties that time cannot sever.

Caring friendship we pledge to you,
Sharing dreams together
God above, bless our love,
Bless our sisters forever.

Delta love, Delta love,
I feel your presence about me,
Growing more, through life's doors,
Sisters comfort and guide me.

Memories dance in my thoughts so gay,
Sweet times, sad times, together
Delta love, Delta love,
Keep our hearts close forever.

Song Stewardship
(Tune: Edelweiss)

Stewardship, Stewardship
Every Sunday you greet me
Notes on walls, talk in halls
You seem intent to get me

Sermons and hymns seem to bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever.
Stewardship, stewardship
Bless my money forever

The CGIT Graduates' Song
(Tune: Edelweiss)

Thank you, Lord, on this day
For our many good blessings.
Thank you, Lord, on this day
For our many close friendships.
Glory to God, may You hear our prayer,
Guide us on forever.
Thank you, Lord, on this day
For our blessings and friendships.

HERE AT CAMP
(Tune: Edelweiss)

Here at camp, here at camp
In all kinds of weather
Here at camp, here at camp
Singing all together
Camps come and go
But you must know
Memories last ever
Here at camp, here at camp
Making friends forever.

Egg So White
(tune: Edelweiss)

Egg so white, egg so white,
Ev'ry morning we greet you.
Small and wet, cold? You bet!
We're so happy to eat you!

Floating along on your pool of grease,
There for our collation,
Egg so white, egg so white,
You're an abomination!

Poached, fried, hard-boiled, Benedict,
A la Russe, scrambled,
Egg so white, egg so white,
Eating you's such a gamble!

MAY THE GOD OF LOVE
(tune edelweiss)

May the God, the God of love
bless and keep you forever,
give you peace, perfect peace,
courage in each endeavor.

Now go forth in joy and love,
and in peace forever,
may the God,
God of love,
bless and keep you forever

(Repeat from "Now go forth")
