I've heard there is another scottish song that uses the same melody as Wild Mountain Thyme. I hear this is the case for several tunes in fact. Can anyone point me to where I could find out?

thankx,

gil

In fact, The Braes of Balquidder is an old Scottish song that had been around for a long time before Frank McPeake wrote Will ye go lassie go

Folkies of most persuasions have never been particulary bothered about "adapting" older melodies. All a part of the famous folk process. The interesting part is when the "new" lyrics become more well known than the older ones.

But in this case I think the influence is unmistakable.

Actually, Francie adapted both the words and the tune of Braes of Balquidder, so the tunes are quite a bit different. Thus, this may or may not be what isng4u is referring to...anyone know any other songe to the tune of Wild Mountain Thyme?

My comment on those notes (nearly two years ago) was a bit unfair, though they aren't exactly a model of clarity; I don't expect that whoever wrote them expected them to be put into the DT as they stood.  Accompanying the remark was a list of links to other discussions here of Wild Mountain Thyme and its relatives, which I may naively have believed would be useful to people in the future:
