Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Apr 02 - 05:26 PM Check the Elderly Instruments website. They have quite a choice from custom-made to fly-by-night. Your question really depends on the value of your instruments and your personal finances. If I could afford it, I would spend the $500 for their custom-made case. The last itme I traveled the hinges broke on my banjo case but I had also strapped the case so everything inside arrived intact. |

Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: X Date: 14 Apr 02 - 04:20 PM No, I own a 1937 RB-12 Gibson, and I have a buddy who worked for "Flying Tiger". He has broken insturment stories that would keep you awake at night. If keeping that banjo in good shape for me and the next guy that owns it after I'm gone than I'm happy to be a little paranoid. |
Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: Barry Finn Date: 14 Apr 02 - 11:12 PM About 5 months back I few from New Hampshire to San Francisco. They would not allow me to purchase adequate insurence to cover my bodhran (ha, ha, yes, some do make a bodhran that would be considered pretty valuable. My baby's a tuneable 20" Grady bodhran with slide bar by Mance Grady. I ended up stuffing it into what I could & used that as my carry on alottment. Listening to Tom Paxton's song about his guitar is enough to make any musician paranoid. 18 yrs ago I went to Ireland with a friend who's most valuable possession in life was his wheel chair. Yup you guess it, they wouldn't allow it to be carried on, so with all kinds of promises from the airline, it went off on it's own into the big black hold. When we arrived for a month's holiday in Ireland his chair was in shambles, not a sorry was offered only an airport wheelchair that was a nightmare for him to live in. If it's very expensive drive it of sail with it, otherwise, at this point I'd probably just leave it at home & try to make do when I got there. I can't imagine what you pro's go thru. GOOD LUCK. Barry |
Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 15 Apr 02 - 02:50 AM Barry, I truly sympathize with your friend, but in over 32 years of professional performing / flying, I've never had an instrument lost or broken. Cross fingers!! I recommend Calton Cases (I'm not paid by the company to promote their cases, I wish I were!). But check the instument and forget it. Until you arrive. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: GUEST,marian Date: 31 Aug 08 - 12:49 PM I will be travelling extensively with my Bodhran on many flights worldwide and would be much happier with a strong protective case. Can't seem to find one, does anyone know where I can get one. No problems getting a fiddle case. |
Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: Bernard Date: 31 Aug 08 - 02:50 PM My vote is for Hiscox, too - I've got two! One dates back to when they were first introduced in the late 1970s (I think...!), when a company rep called into the local music shop. He opened the case, showed everyone present that there was an expensive Gibson acoustic (can't remember the model...) inside, closed it again and jumped on it! I bought one there and then! I've seen other lookalikes, such as Kingston, which will not handle such abuse. Yamaha UK uses them, and so does Burns (London) - okay, Burns are made in Korea these days... I would think that the addition of one or maybe two plywood discs inside a standard padded bodhran carry bag would do the job. I wouldn't have though a decent bodhran (did I just write that?!) would have any issues with the hoop, you probably only need to protect the head. Just a thought. |
Subject: RE: Good flight cases for instruments? From: Zen Date: 31 Aug 08 - 04:41 PM Calton... excellent but very expensive. Pegasus... ditto Calton. Hiscox... good and reasonable price. RyanAir did manage to puncture mine but the guitar inside wasn't damaged and I was able to repair the case. Eastman fibreglass case... very good and a reasonable price. I sold my 30-year-old Calton mandolin case and bought a new Eastman fibreglass one with the proceeds and had some change left over. I actually prefer it to the Calton. Zen |
