Deckman, you also have one of my father's capos as a memento--and I was glad that you asked for it. I have his first tuning fork, and my children think it is as magical as I did when I was a child.

In the accessory compartment: Picks, slides, capoes, peg winder, tuning forks, a pre-amp and a bunch of old strings, and some new ones as well. In the main compartment: a strap, a tuner, a cleaning cloth and various old set lists and song lyrics, as well as collected business cards and phone numbers I'll need to call someday to see who is on the other end. I think I have a truss rod wrench in there somewhere, but I really didn't dig that deep.

I took the original sales reciept and warrantee card out about ten years ago, but that really didn't help much. I predict that within a few years I'll have to carry the case and the guitar separately.

Please forgive the thread creep, but I can't resist commenting on the exterior condition of instrument cases. Recently I looked at a used mandolin to possibly buy. Good hardshell case, but someone had used some sort of black tape, like duct tape, to try and conceal the worn out original black fabric covering. It looked pretty bad, but worse, adhesive seemed to migrate from the sides of the tape and stick to my fingers when I handled the case. Not conducive to good playing, IMO.

There is no fabric left on the edges of my six-string case. You see the plywood. Plenty of gouges on the top and back as well. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, as those dings would have been on the guitar if not for the case. Kind of like the gray hairs in my beard, I feel that I have earned the battle scars on my case. I cleaned out my fridge the other day, something I seldom do, found a milk carton with Patty Hurst on it.

Don't play one myself but I recall Mudcats own Spot the Dog opening his case in a Methodist, strictly tee-total, church hall and out fell about 2 dozen cans of Guiness! His guitar had been carried in seperately and the case was just to hold the beer. Good job the audience had a sense of humour:-)

I think Burl should answer this one. When I knew him in the early sixties Burl carried a guitar case when he played at my club. He never opened it on stage, infact he never got a guitar from the case, He always sung unnacompanied. When I asked him why he never played his guitar he told me the case was full of shirts, underpants and socks and other traveling gear, he said, "But if you are a folk singer you just got to carry a guitar case"

A birthday card from my daughter when she was three, capo, string winder, finger ease, couple of picks, tuner, lint, short mono cord for using tuner in a crowded space, guitar, strap, yellow mushroom towel for cleaning hands (of the human) and neck (of the guitar).

On the outside are dozens of stickers on stickers - about all that holds it together!

And last but not least - millions of memories.

My picks, guitar tuner, and capo, and my autograph picture of Gordon Lightfoot. I wrote to him a few years ago, for help to beat stage fright, and he sent me back a autograph picture of him, and putting on it "to: Steven, Keep up the good work!, Gordon Lightfoot"

So I kept it in my guitar case for musical inspiration, and help me beat stage fright.

You remember how he used to have the lists of song titles taped to his guitar? It started with a modest list on a 3 by 5 card taped to the shoulder of the insrument, where he could look and decide which of the songs he knew to sing. As he learned more, the list grew to cover the entire side, and finally migrated to a typed list, column after column, taped to the back that finally covered the back completely. On occasion at concerts or hoots someone else would remark in the list and hold his guitar up for the audience to see.

I found several capos in the guitar case, his old tuning fork, (I think it must have been for luck, because I know he had electronic gadgets for tuning in later years), notepads, pencil stubs, probably a chap stick. The usual stuff. I think there was a little pocket-sized thing of kleenex. m

Not that any of the above are regularly used, but it gets lonesome sometimes, and occasionally another lost soul offers if only you had a A. C. or D.

Actually, I lied. I have two accordion cases. One of them has two accordions in it (with the lid up, accordions standing upright) and the other one is empty because it stinks inside.

Very similar to an earlier story, but absolutely true. My ex-wife singer ran out of carrier bags to take her stuff to the laundrette, and had to improvise. In a rush to get to a show that night, she grabbed her guitar case, did the journey, arrived on stage, opened up her guitar case... and found it full of her underwear.

Hi back Stilly River Sage ... Yes, we all use those "cheat sheets." Besides songs, mine often includes things like: cat food, milk, eggs! And yes, I well remember that John did cover the entire back of his guitar with columns of songs. I once suggested that he add layers, like pages. I think he tried it once, but said it interferred with his playing. Boy do I miss him! He had the largest repertoire of anyone I knew. CHEERS, Bob

Bought a like-new late 40's Fender lap steel and Geib wooden case from an old man at a garage sale several years ago. In the case pockets i found an ancient bakelite covered bullet slide, a silver plated metal pitch pipe for some wierd tuning, a fender logo dust cloth, and some old lexan "Dobro" stamped fingerpicks.

A battered folder with music either recently learned or in the process of learning, a copy of the Civil War Song book I put together and a few strand of hay from the last re-enactment I was at. On the outside a variety of stickers holding it together. On the soft case which i vary rarely use al list of all the ports I visited while in the service since I bought the guitar. I may dig it out and sart putting various re-enactments on it but probably not. Kindest reguards, Neil

If you stand them up on their bass plate end with the keyboards pointing up, you can put them in one in front of the other. But you can't close the lid.

None whatsoever. But they don't need much protection when they're just sitting on the floor in my apartment.

I never go anywhere with both accordions, so it's never been an issue before now. However, I'm thinking about possibly taking both of them to the Getaway, and I'm having trouble deciding how I want to handle transporting them.

I really don't want to carry my Italian box in the case it came in, because it really does stink (it's old and very musty, and lined with icky crushed velvet), but I don't want either of them to get damaged, either.

Hmmm... what to do... what to do?

my guitar case has a deep burgundy plush lining and one day while i was playing my son spilled a frosty in in and i had a fit, and to this very day there are still stains from that frosty that i could'nt get out.

Not that I've dealt with accordian cases per se, but here goes:

Take/pry the "icky crushed velvet" lining out of the box, lay it out on a large piece of paper and cut yourself a pattern from it. Then get some new fabric (velvet is very pricey, perhaps velour is more affordable) and use your pattern to cut a new liner. (I wouldn't expose the new one to the old directly, or it might make it stinky also) Meanwhile, it all of the time it will take from when you eviscerate the box until you finally finish relining it (takes me weeks or months to sometimes finish sewing projects, hence my thoughts of the passage of time) you might think of something like a liberal sprinkling of baking soda to soak up the rest of the odor from the case.

Fresh pack of strings, several picks, extra 9V battery, truss rod wrench, wire cutters, string winder, glass slide, 2 Shubb Capos (bought one then got the other as a gift a week later), Guitar care and maintenance manuals, and a strap. That list is from memory, as I'm at work right now...It'll probably turn out that a few items are missing when I go home and check.

Brush out the soda before putting anything back in the case! On reflection, I'd advise a little research before trying something so seemingly benign as baking soda in the case; it's great around the house and in the laundry, but you don't want to have it react in some way with the materials the instrument(s) are made of.

I'd hate to be the cause of a thread on "dumb ideas for the care of musical instruments".
