Followed the vegan way of eating today just to see if I could do it and if I would like it. No animal products of any kind. It certainly makes a body think!

Hardi's been cranking up the family pop-up campers since he was about 8. Today I took over the job. I accompanied it with a little sermon on how one CAN actually take one's time and do it in sets of 10 cranks, just like a weight-lifting set. Because there are no mean parents sitting around cracking the whip, nor hungry little kids clamoring for dinner NOW, etc. Nope, now he has to put up with a wife working on muscle development (who likes to do muscle stuff, herself). Has to learn how to sit around waiting for someone else to do the chores, like I've had to do when all I COULD do was sit.

It was that comment in the midst of yesterday's mini-campout; we had been naming the unmistakable sounds-- common to all campgrounds-- that indicate a fresh arrival. (Wives backing their hubbies into the campsite pad, manic Hot Wheels on gravel, etc.), and he mentioned "Agonal Cranking." It was funny-- but only sorta. :~)

Our front yard is very uneven...makes it hard to walk for me and my trick ankles. I have not watered my flowerbed, shrubs, and new tree since I hurt my foot. Rog and Morgan have been doing their best, but Rog misses a day or two and Morgan never waters each spot long enough. This morning I stepped out with the dog, on the front "stoop" and saw my poor, poor sunflowers drooping over a fence which sits about three feet in front of them. how could I NOT risk a walk across the grass to water them and all of my other posies? So...(drum roll, please)I stepped out, sturdy cane in hand, and watered all but the ornamental grasses around the corner. It took a lot of effort and it hurt, some, but it felt GOOD and I am counting it as exercise!:-)

Four miles walking/hiking/climbing hills to pick 5 pounds of wild blackberries. Hand dug another 60 pounds of potatoes. Lots of back-and-forthing picking beans, lettuce, tomatoes and arranging them on the farm stand.

Add another mile to yesterdays total, but today I'm perforce a chairobics contender... stuck in printing out 50 X 40 pages of sheet music. The trip to the big shops yesterday was to find out the copying costs. Turns out it's the price of 4 printer cartridges so it's cheaper to do it here!

However, I shall be sitting 'vigourously' with some scary music on. The decluttering has been minorly successful in this room so there is space to wiggle the chair around.

Many more steps walked than normal, but no idea how many.

Alas though, many more pints of beer consumed than normal... and I know exactly how many there were!

Still, if I haven't lost any weight, it's certainly redistributed itself - I can get my jacket to meet across the front where it didn't last week!

Made up chores requiring some homebound stairclimbing today since pool out of the question. Extra dinner chores, kitchen chores, and a lovely recliner sit with leashed #1 dog Faulkner in a new vacay-like zone we created that doesn't hurt my knees to get out to, for some shady fresh air. Figgered out a way to make that zone dog-safe too; planning to fabricate a really big dog-playpen there on the cheap and easy. Have most of the materials, maybe all of them.

Kat....smart move! Never rush the healing process! In yoga, we are constantly told to do what feels good, or to find our own edge....and it sounds like you did just that!

When you do Qi Gong, do you do the animals? I did a yoga/kayaking retreat and we did some Qi Gong.....the animal ones were fun and I loved watching the instructor's form....the moves are really beautiful to watch. I particularly liked monkey, cougar and bear.

Feel better.

After over a month of being off my feet, I managed two minutes on the treadmill before my heel started hurting a tiny bit. NOt taking any chances, so I stopped. Tomorrow, I start back on my Qi Gong for Seniors, sitting in a chair. It's better than nothing.

This vision issue is such that any screen-focusing costs me bigtime in dizziness the rest of the day whenever I try to use my eyes again. By day's end my patience has been well exercised!!! Yesterday I blew that "estimate" of vision allocation: the pooltime sheduled for day's end was cut short when I was just too dizzy to be safe in deep water.

But, all this means that anything I post (till the doc fixes me up) is rushed but important to me, especially if it's not a recreational bedtime one (after I've used up my sight muscles for the day).

It also means that in addition to typos I may be just ungracious or insensitive as all get-out. Apologies in advance.

Corrected portion of above post:

Immediately after eating, one's metabolism rises temporarily to digest what has been eaten. It's called "thermogenesis." We all do it.

It's helpful to harness it. Exercise done during thermogenesis will burn more calories than exercise done at other times.

That means that if you get the amounts right, and the time frame right, and the right amount/duration of exercise-- you not only get a constant-fuel state and are never really very hungry (unless you've exercised your buns off), you ALSO burn not only most of what you ate, but a bit more.

You burn off weight most efficiently when you can balance all of that.

So-- the mini-meals alternating with activity WORK, powerfully and pretty painlessly. :~)

Immeduiately after eating, one's metabolism rises temporarily to digest what has been eaten. It's called "thermogenesis." We all do it. (It's helpful to harness it.)

That means that if you get the amounts right, and the time frame right, you not only get a constant-fuel state and are never really very hungry (unless you've exercised your buns off), you ALSO burn not only what you ate, but a bit more. You burn off weight most efficiently when you can balance all of that.

It does not compute for food addicts, but if the weight did not come on as a result of addiction, it can come off with a few scientific tweaks. Absent addiction, what is hard is not doing it but learning enough about it to make it work in your favor.

The ideal mini-meal components as explained to me long ago by a diabetic friend are: a fruit, a carb, and a protein. Always. ALWAYS. The fruit will start to burn first, and then the carb will kick in, and the protein will keep it all burning slow and steady. Amounts, picture a half a tennis ball (or half a pingpong ball) for each component and adjust as needed for activity level-- for example more carb for more activity, less fruit if it's a concentrate like jam or juice, etc. Again, the trick is to balance them correctly to one's activity level and food preferences.

It's not well known, but (absent food addiction) it is not a practical necessity to undergo gastric bypass in order to reduce meal sizes significantly. One can study the nearest bariatric program, see what they are doing and eating, and simply emulate it.

The change is mental-- eat to live instead of live to eat, and eat what is needed for the actual situation at hand-- remembering always that if one is hungry in ten minutes or 2 hours, one can always eat another mini-meal.

Treating food like an enemy only reinforces the "power" the food has. We're so much smarter than that, really. The more likely real culprit-- the rationale for this thread, right?-- is the activity level. When I am doing the workouts I LIKE to do, I can easily burn 3000 calories a day, eating as much ice cream as my digestion will allow.

All this of course does not fit popular cultural ideas about food, but, "Who's shrinking?" I reply, "and who ain't?"

I don't know if I eat every 2 hours but I eat frequently too. The idea, at least for me, is that I try to eat BEFORE I get hungry...or perhaps it's that I don't get hungry because I keep a steady stream of fuel going in. Some days it's more than others depending upon the activity going on.....power yoga days or strength training days require a little bit more for me or my blood sugar takes a nose dive. Low blood sugar sun salutations are no fun!!!

So Jillie, yep....are you the one doing WW? I forget who else it was...but this works beautifully with the plan, whether it be Core or Flex. :)

Positive: Weight Watchers friend had us over for dinner tonight...food was YUMMY and healthy...it was nice to go somewhere where others are health conscious too. :)

Added Bonus: I was able to share the clothes that are now too big for me. I know they will be put to good use and appreciated....too bad she just needs the one size larger than mine as I have clothing that range in sizes that are only one size too large to 5 sizes too large....and they have been taking over my closet! Until today, that is. I spent this morning taking out everything that was just too big and now have five piles that are 3 feet high! Only one more rack to go and probably I should go through my sweaters too. I beleive, I have enough folks interested to have a plus-sized winter coat swap...I can't be the only person who has winter coats that are too big!!!

I had been wearing the same huge men's shirts bought when I needed them, because they were comfy, all cotton, and expensive. Alone, or open over shells.

Camping, we buy exclusively Goodwill. I'm surprisingly able to fend off skeeters now, so evening outdoor sitting is a new toy, even IF cold.... At Goodwill, a men's size MUCH smaller looked good enough to wear for the upcoming cold evening, long-sleeve.... Hardi said, when I put it on, it fit perfectly and was CUTE. Now I can't seem to stop wearing it. I got a lot svelter than I knew! Time to check the scale and measurements again to mark a new baseline. I mean, I do not know this woman, but I need to get to know her ASAP. She fits into one mirror, for one thing. When was the last time THAT was true?!?

And all without focusing on diet or weight loss at all. Just having too much FUN. And eating constantly. Hardi makes me do it. Every 2 hours. When the rest of the world is stuffed from lunch, I'm eating the 2nd half of mine. The total and content are the same as anyone else ate, but without splitting it in half or thirds, it's instant pounds on (instead of instant pounds off).

This has been accompanied by many spontaneous, visceral memories of my very active 20's, 30's and early 40's. It would seem that ability is coming back, as well.

I put on my other shoes for the first time in about two months and went to the store with Rog. I pushed the cart and walked the aisles and really felt it in all parts of my bawd...not quite limped to the car. Put on my regular shoes and felt more "movable" by the time we got home. It's a start in getting back to where I was; I haven't gone to the shops or anywhere else where I walk, in about a month. Things are getting better!

He took my camera & my shoes. I took his picture.

I've been trying to get my blood sugar down so I've been doing a full workout on those modern machines for an hour on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays & then I swim after that, on Tuesdays & Thursdays I just swim.
On Saturdays I try to do some music & on Sundays my kids beat me up.
