Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 07:05 AM Ladies and Gents... presenting... an Elgin 18s open face pocket watch from 1902: Face Movement I picked this up at an online auction house in Bath (Gardiner Houlgate) for £75 last week, and it arrived this morning. Like all these things, you see one photo - it's not like eBay - ask the auction house if it's working, bid and hope for the best! Anyways, it's working beautifully and keeping good time so far. It's in superb condition for a watch that's 110 years old - and what a weight! It's the first 18s watch I've acquired and it's a heavy bugger! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 May 12 - 01:14 PM My watch rental rates are very reasonable... |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 May 12 - 08:08 AM Ah, Kendall - it only takes one or two dedicated If you're feeling bereft of an Elgin, I have two or three down here in Sussex you can make use of... or a Waltham or two... or a Hamilton 992B... :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 27 May 12 - 05:16 AM I can't fathom why this thread is so popular. Almost two years and close to 700 hits. Some threads don't last more than a few days. I left my Elgin 16 at home and I feel naked without it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 26 May 12 - 10:09 AM Mine is marked Adjusted Q. This one really is perfect and a perfect time keeper. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 May 12 - 02:47 PM The Hamilton 926 was sold to Canadian railroaders, some with jewelers name on dial, all with 24-hour dial. 17-jewel. Size 18. They were marked adjusted on the bridge, but I don't know how many positions- is yours marked? A cheaper, good pocket watch is the 916, not railroad acceptable but a good timepiece. Often an be had for under $100 in good condition, and the 16 size is easy to carry. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 02 May 12 - 02:46 PM One full winding each morning ... only some very high grade RR watches run longer .. yours is not ... a 992b will run for 50 hours but you still should wind every morning. Hey here is a size 18 Illinois RR grade. MINT PERFECT this watch is like it just came out of the factory ... lever set 225 if anyone wants it http://www.flickr.com/photos/75412578@N04/6990263060/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/75412578@N04/6990262500/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/75412578@N04/6990262536/in/photostream/ |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 02 May 12 - 11:31 AM I usually wind mine once a day - same time each day - but I've missed a day sometimes. Some stop - some continue running. Why not wind it and leave it for 48 hours - then check it. If it's running then that will give you an accuracy test and you can wind it again. If it's stopped, then reset it and check & wind it 24 hours later. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 02 May 12 - 11:10 AM Here I am, now, faced with a terribly serious delimna; I'm not about to wear this watch knocking around every day. But I want to keep it running steady for a few days, to see how close it actually holds the time. Will one of these things run for a couple of days on a winding, or does it take at least once each day? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 May 12 - 05:30 PM Very, very mixed reviews about Stauer watches - some people are happy with what they've got - others have complained bitterly. The hard-core watch forum guts don't rate them - but they're hard-core watch freaks. My view would be: if it gives you $100-worth of timekeeping - in your eyes - it's done OK for you! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 May 12 - 04:11 PM I bought the watch new from Stauer last year. They have several models, mostly wrist. The name is "Stauer," but similar new watches appear on Ebay under various names. They are either 23 or 27 jewel. It is not one of the older good Russian (Zenit) etc., types. (Older Chinese? Those I don't know). I have commented on them before. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 May 12 - 04:01 PM What make is it, Q? Some Chinese-made watches are high quality and expensive, and even 40-year old Russian-made watches like the Molnija are very solid and dependable - as well as cheap. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 May 12 - 03:33 PM Out of curiosity, I bought one of those 27 jewel watches made in China. Automatic, too. Cost under $100. Quality? Will it last 100 years? Dunno. Seems to run OK. Haven't checked long term accuracy, since I don't wear it constantly, and the automatic wind gives out. Large and clunky compared to an Omega, etc. Has anyone come across a study of these new cheapies? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 May 12 - 10:58 AM And even crazier is when you do go back to the early rare RR watches, you then go back to 17 Jewels LOL It is all insanity |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 May 12 - 10:47 AM Even worse my brother is when you move up to the rare high end RR watches, they are all huge size 18 and ya can't even carry them. Your britches would be down to your ankles if you did LOL madness I tell ya, and I bet we got froggie hooked I do |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 May 12 - 10:44 AM It doesn't my brother, it just gets more expensive. A guy starts out with 7 jewels, then goes to 17, then wants only high end RR watches 21 Jeweled or more ... then only wants rare high end RR watches .. sigh .. the madness never ceases |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 May 12 - 03:39 AM A vest (we call 'em waistcoats or "weskit" over here in the UK) is an absolute must for carrying a pocket watch. I have a brushed velvet one that I bought many years ago - many years as testified by the enlarged gap between the buttons and the buttonholes! - and a nice suede one. A good, matching chain is also nice. The size watches I have - mainly 16s - and the casings really demand a nice chunky link size. I'm scouring eBay at the moment - picked up a couple recently and have another in my sights at the moment. Sigh... will this madness never end... :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 30 Apr 12 - 10:19 PM I've got afternoon shift at the art gallery Wednesday. I usually just try to have a clean shirt on. But this time, just for a first excuse, I'll put on decent slacks and a vest that Judy made me a while back, so I can wear this with the chain across in proper traditional style for a first time. Dan says this isn't really a valuable watch. That's the one thing he's mistaken about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 30 Apr 12 - 08:25 PM I'm trying to believe that my old two-bit junk watch is setting here looking cool and ticking away. Question in your PMs, Dan. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 28 Apr 12 - 01:18 PM I did Kendall and I been playing the heck out of it ... gosh you are so talented, your stories amazing entertaining .. and thank you for the photo, I will cherish it too |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,kendall Date: 28 Apr 12 - 07:50 AM My birthday present, a Waltham RR 1894 is still right on the money after three days. Thanks again, Dan. Did you get the CD? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 27 Apr 12 - 11:44 AM Well, at least the chain I ordered didn't cost much. Judy has so many collectible frogs around here, I don't dare start a collection of anything. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 Apr 12 - 11:36 AM Dan - that Elgin Father Time is beautiful - PM me with a price if you're in a selling mood... |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 27 Apr 12 - 03:57 AM Dan - 1928 Waltham on its way to you - check your PMs... And the 992B is keeping dead accurate time - wonderful! Thanks again. I've ordered a nice, chunky, rolled-gold chain to accompany it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 26 Apr 12 - 11:20 PM I gave you one, a big old RR chain cause I figured you didn't have one. and just use it, ya can't break anything that I can't have fixed, it is 1891 in your pocket, think of the history that thing has seen and now it is alive again |
