You finish a song and someone says, "You must have written that!" What the heck does that mean?!!

Looks like the hate-its are ahead. I'd better think of a few more love-its. (I really do love it more than hate it.)

... you get to the end of singing a heartfelt song, and before the last chord is even strummed or anyone has time to reflect on the song for an instant, someone launches off into a raucous thumper.

You read the thread title and think it's about Black country singers and then find out you're wrong.

When you're having a music session with some old fellows (70's, 80's) and you've just been playing lots of trad tunes and one of them says 'That were nice me lovelies, now us'll teach 'ee some railly OLD tunes!' and off they go...'It's a long way to Tipperary', 'Pack up Your Troubles','She'll be Coming Round the Mountain'......

Someone says "Did YOU write that" in an a tone that implies that YOU couldn't write ANYTHING.

You type a carefully considered message to a thread, read it carefully before hitting the "submit" button, then notice the several typos you carefully managed to carefully overlook.

It's easy to overlook redundancies, too.

I hate it when....I'm asked to sing for an event, and they say, "oh yes, we have a GOOD piano.".....I never take anybody's word for it anymore.

Don't you just hate it when.. My Grandmother was heard to say " Why yes, Donnie plays guitar, of course he can only play chords."

DYJHIW.... I've heard you play before, I came to hear.."fill in the blank"

DYJHIW.... You and the band drive 125 miles and show up for the wedding and there is another band set up in your place and the bride says, my mother hired a different band, she was sure you would send your money to the IRA, you understand don't you?

DYJHIW.... You agree to do a freebie for a good cause and you learn you are to warm up for the church organist.

All the above are true.

Don Meixner

Jean Redpath used to tell the story of singing for a ladies group and being told afterwards "you have a lovely voice, my dear...too bad you never did anything with it.."

...someone asks me, as I lean on my guitar case in an airport, train station or any other public place: "Do you play guitar?" Last time I flew out of Orlando about a dozen people asked me that question. Finally, in a desperate move to save my sanity, I said to the last person, a young man in his early twenties, "No. The case is empty. I steal toilet paper from public restrooms." His reply,"Cool."

An elderly lady who played piano and led singing of "old favorites" (read: show tunes) at an "arts conference" once asked Caroline and me -- "Do you sing any REAL songs?" We had just done three hours a day for five days of songs and ballads from the folk tradition.

I hate it when my husband says "Yes, very nice, but why don't you learn JUST ONE song that you can do really really well." hmph.

Kris

Also - sort of worried when someone told me I had a really 'folk' voice. What's one of them then? (and she had a really 'blues' voice, and I know what that is and I WANT ONE....)

Don't you just hate it when?

You have composed and presented a new song/tune and someone says to you, "that sounds a bit like ....", or "have you heard that one by ..........?"!

I know this done mostly in inocence and with the best intentions, (I think), but the last thing you really want to hear, at that point is that you have consiously or unconciously stolen something, or that someone else has done something similar or 'God forbid', better. (*smiles*)

Actually I was wondering why there were not many new threads and was struggling to find something to start one with, but it would be interesting to see if there are certain phrases that you dread to hear.
