From Rick Fieldings "Voices of Struggle":

In Chile, while we watched a country's hopes come and gone,
the army crushed a people, but the could not crush the song.
Victor Jara's tortured body will not suffer anymore,
Though dead, his spirit rises with a mighty freedom roar.

All the best,

Mick

Lest we forget

Victor Jara
words by Adrian Mitchell, music by Arlo Guthrie

Victor Jara of Chile
Lived like a shooting star
He fought for the people of Chile
With his songs and his guitar
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Victor Jara was a peasant
He worked from a few years old
He sat upon his father's plow
And watched the earth unfold
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Now when the neighbors had a wedding
Or one of their children died
His mother sang all night for them
With Victor by her side
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

He grew up to be a fighter
Against the people's wrongs
He listened to their grief and joy
And turned them into songs
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

He sang about the copper miners
And those who worked the land
He sang about the factory workers
And they knew he was their man
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

He campaigned for Allende
Working night and day
He sang "Take hold of your brothers hand
You know the future begins today"
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Then the generals seized Chile
They arrested Victor then
They caged him in a stadium
With five-thousand frightened men
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Victor stood in the stadium
His voice was brave and strong
And he sang for his fellow prisoners
Till the guards cut short his song
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

They broke the bones in both his hands
They beat him on the head
They tore him with electric shocks
And then they shot him dead
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Repeat first verse

The old F***er's dead. I hope he died slowly, painfully, hopelessly. Hell is to good for him.

Down he'll go in some dark hole
Where the fish'll have his body and the devil have his soul......

Not laughted so much since Franco died. Can't wait for Thatcher, Bush and Bliar.

Masters of War
by Bob Dylan

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

I have a friend in Sheffield the City took a number of refugees and Luis was one of them.

One day after a footy game when he took his shirt off I saw what Pinochets thugs had done to him.

Pinochet dead? Rejoice.

My ex husband was Chilean, an exile in France from the Pinochet regime. I personally knew many people who had been tortured by the DINA - the Chilean equivalent of the Nazi SS.   My ex's brother was one of the thousands who "disappeared" and it wasn't until twenty five years later that the family learned for sure what they had suspected, he was tortured to death and dumped in to a mass grave. He was 20 years old and left behind a wife and a one year old son. Just last month I learned something that made me physically sick about what had been done to another family member in those days after the coup - an infant who was tortured with electric shocks until the father broke down and gave up some information. It did no good - the baby died under the torture and the father has lived with this all these years, plus the fact that he broke down and gave information that lead to someone's death.

I'm glad Pinochet is gone, but I'm just sorry he went peacefully.

Is that one of those new ecologically friendly toilets, Peace? The ones that use less water?

It's not so eco-friendly when you have to flush it 5 times.

There is one advantage to having my belief system. I now know that this despot is receiving that which he has so richly deserves.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Do you suppose it's just a coincidence the grim reaper came for him and Jeanne Kirkpatrick at the same time?

Addresses of their graves to follow, so the world can dance upon them.

Let's hope the late, unlamented General Augusto Pinochet case has now been passed on to a higher court.
