Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST Date: 15 Jun 08 - 08:57 AM I'm currently rviewing Skyhook's CD and saw them at a recent gig - well worth catching and I think they are doing quite a few festivals Glorystrokes sound great and looking foward to seeing them at Shrewsbury. Roger Davies is my favourite new singer songriter on the circuit - check out is my space site for a few of his witty songs. The person who doesn't get the exposure at festivals that he should is Robb Johnson - I've been a fan for 20 years so he is not exactly new! Again check his site out. Cheers Joe G. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Graham and Jo Date: 14 Jun 08 - 10:14 AM Have been looking for a current gig list for housewive's choice. It's an impressive line-up they've got. Can't find anything current, the stuff on the site I found was for 2007. Anyone know where / when they are playing? concert/workshop/ceilidh -any would do. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Graham and Jo Date: 14 Jun 08 - 06:48 AM Just listened to Glory strokes too. Will try to get to th Big National Ceilidh in Sheffield 18th October. Not good at 'blue clickys' but the site is www.glorystrokes.com Thanks for these tips! |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Graham and Jo Date: 14 Jun 08 - 06:03 AM Was just listening to Blue Horses on the above link. Wow! Makes me want to get my own bridge fiddle out and wipe the dust off it. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 06 Jun 08 - 06:55 AM Dragonsfly I saw at Wookey Hole and they were good... a Celtic-Eastern-Folk Fusion band that likes to get people dancing. Sheelanagig are a a dynamic instrumental band I saw at Nailsea who were apparently at Knockengorroch World Ceilidh and also go to folk-rock, folk and jazz events. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Mo the caller Date: 06 Jun 08 - 03:43 AM Wayne said I thought the Askew Sisters were fab when they played at Chester They are on at Middlewich at the fringe I think |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 05 Jun 08 - 08:34 PM Is the ancient art of horizontal folk dancing still as popular? |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,guest Date: 05 Jun 08 - 07:36 PM Please don't forget the beautiful singing of Emily Portman, Lauren MCCormick and Jackie Oates - look them up on MySpace etc. They have done their homework and are a joy. They have worked so hard with the young kids at Sidmouth and been an inspiration to my young daughter. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Anne Lister Date: 05 Jun 08 - 07:12 PM I think I may have to put in an order for more pairs of the mesmerising footwear, as so far they've gained me a lot of street cred with kids when I'm booked in schools, and they seem to work with adults, too. So this pair may be worn out by 2010 but there will be others! Anne |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,Leila.. Date: 05 Jun 08 - 06:52 PM I would just like to mention a few names... 4 to be exact! Chris Helme, Andy Stones, Edwina Hayes and Hayley Hutchinson.. Fab!!! |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Rasener Date: 05 Jun 08 - 06:42 PM Indeed Folkie Dave I know what you are on about Anahata. Pig Dyke Molly are superb. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Folkiedave Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:54 PM Whoever started this thread many thanks. It does go to prove there are some really great bands around - some on this list do not quite deserve the word "new" but I have heard 90% of them and they are all worth listening to. And we have missed off regular 'catters like Tom Bliss, and Hip Flask Andy (Duncan McFarlane)- both well worth a trip to hear. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: treewind Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:49 PM I don't know about Anne's, but here's a pair of shoes Anyone who knows we've recently joined Pig Dyke Molly will know what that's about... Anahata |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,Jane Bird Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:45 PM Really good new ceilidh bands? Boldwood: fiddles and piano accordian. A very dancable, robust and subtle English band playing a lot of 18th century tunes and with more than a hint of the baroque. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Surreysinger Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:18 PM I'm now intrigued to know what the footwear looks like, even if Les isn't !!! |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Rasener Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:18 PM hmmm have you seen the diary? Fully booked until end of 2009. Not doing anymore bookings until May next year for 2010. That mesmering footwear might be a bit wiffy by then LOL :-) |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Anne Lister Date: 05 Jun 08 - 05:10 PM Hey, Les - wanna see the mesmerising footwear? *nudge* Anne |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Rasener Date: 05 Jun 08 - 04:28 PM Brother Crow at Faldingworth Live - Does Les know LOL :-) I have been trying to book the Churchfitters for some time. Go see. Agree about Mary Humphries and Anahata - they even arrive in a rubber dinghy on time to play when the floods are around - as was the case when they played at Faldingworth last year. Agree about No fixed Abode who have also appeared at Faldingworth Live. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Anne Lister Date: 05 Jun 08 - 03:02 PM I KNEW those trainers were a good investment! Anne |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: bubblyrat Date: 05 Jun 08 - 02:38 PM No Fixed Abode and Anne Lister both contributed greatly to the recent very enjoyable Bude Festival----in fact ,Anee's taste in footwear is positively mesmerising !! |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 05 Jun 08 - 01:52 PM I thought the Askew Sisters were fab when they played at Chester, as were The Churchfitters who may be several albums into their career but I'd never heard them before. The Doghouse Roses were another Chester highlight. Old stagers all but the band is relatively recent, I believe. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 08 - 11:34 AM A lot of the acts mentioned here have been around for some time. Bella Hardy and friends do a mean gig now. Coming on in leaps and bounds. And damn and blast! I missed the Young Uns at Beverley. They sound to be right up my street. Will keep a look out for them. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 05 Jun 08 - 11:25 AM Crucible, for me have a great sound, both instrumentally and a capellally too. They also have the rythmn requirement, playing and dancing in many and various Morris teams and ceilidh bands, including Pecsaetan, Jockey, Sheffield MM, Grenoside Sword, Hekety, Glorystrokes, to name a few which they have played/danced for/with over the years (brief years too in their case). They also sit in with other bands as occasion permits, actually coming to think of it they really do piss me off totally. We are all looking forward to their trip to Canada this year. JohnB |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Brother Crow Date: 05 Jun 08 - 11:07 AM Hi Graham and Jo....no we're a different group (well, duo) to the Crows...check us out at www.myspace.com/brothercrowfolk Leveller: Thanks for the recommendation... Paul: Of course I did!!! I'll add my endorsment for both Wendy Arrowsmith and The Young Uns....both are excellent. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Banjiman Date: 05 Jun 08 - 10:23 AM Just need to add my endorsements for both Brother Crow (you know I was only joking above Graeme)and The Young'uns. Catch both of these excellent acts and Wendy Arrowsmith (with Blind Summat) + others at The Ann Garbutt Memorial Weekend, in aid of Cancer Research at Hardraw, North Yorkshire (in the Dales, it's Beautiful) on Saturday June 14th. Main concert on the Saturday night with singarounds from Friday 13th lunchtime until Sunday 15th evening. Camping available but limited I understand. Paul |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: treewind Date: 05 Jun 08 - 09:55 AM I wouldn't call the Threlfalls new, but they're certainly worth a good listen. CHARM are performing as such at Shrewsbury, our only gig as CHARM this year. The two constituent groups are also performing separately but one after the other in the Sunday afternoon concert at the Gower Festival. Anahata |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Graham and Jo Date: 05 Jun 08 - 09:40 AM Thanks for the recommendations. Some of them we recognise. Were lucky enough to see the Young-uns when they came to Beverley Beck. Must get around to some festivals now we know what to look out for. I remember a group called the Crows from many years ago. Is brother Crow anything to do with them? |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: theleveller Date: 05 Jun 08 - 08:56 AM Beat me to that, as well, Paul - had to log off in a hurry before I said Wendy Arrowsmith (and someone called Paul). Also loved Landermason. So that also covers my three latest CDs as well. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Mo the caller Date: 05 Jun 08 - 08:53 AM I agree with the recommendation for Time Bandits. Mary Humphries and Anahata also sometimes work as CHARM with Craig, Morgan, Robson. If you enjoy traditional songs and tunes its well worth seeing any combination of these. On the front page of my new EFDSS mag there is a picture of Trio Threlfall, I enjoyed them at Whitby. Maybe not a 'new act' but we enjoy Joan Gifford at Chippenham for her different slant on old songs, and humour. Ceilidh bands; I don't know if festival organisers have booked Alberio or Peak Folk , but if you like dancing to a well played fiddle and live in the NW, they are well worth hearing. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Banjiman Date: 05 Jun 08 - 08:27 AM Graeme, ..... a bit sad having to promote yourself isn't it? (good job The Leveller rescued you):-) But while we're at it......Wendy Arrowsmith (not myself obviously but I do have a vested interest!) catch her at Dent, Pickering, Grotton In The Hollow, Scarborough Seafest, Festival On The Moor, Lockerbie, Ingleton.......... Cheers Paul |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: theleveller Date: 05 Jun 08 - 06:57 AM Beat me to it, Graeme. Whatever you do, don't miss Brother Grow - they come highly recommended. Hope to see more of you in the future. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Brother Crow Date: 05 Jun 08 - 06:52 AM ...and Brother Crow, but I'm biased !!! Graeme (mandolin), Brother Crow. P.S. We're on at Faldingworth Live in February 2009 supporting Pete Coe. |

Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Hawker Date: 05 Jun 08 - 04:00 AM Mandotim, I'm with you and your list, also, Mary Humphries and Anahata are a great couple, Capella and No Fixed Abode. Anne Lister is also a delight to listen to. Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Marilyn Date: 05 Jun 08 - 03:21 AM The Time Bandits are an excellent ceilidh band. I have been to a couple of their dances now (Dave Ball calling) and have been very impressed. They are a superb band in concert too and were playing at Chester Folk Festival this year. The Time Bandits I haven't heard the Boat Band playing for a dance yet but have seen them several times in concert and they are so good. Given that they all have superb rhythm it isn't at all surprising that they are a good band to dance to. Boat Band Have you had a look at the eCeilidh forum? If you're looking for info about ceilidh bands that would be a good place to look, I think. eceilidh forum |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: mandotim Date: 05 Jun 08 - 03:12 AM Try and catch Isambarde, George Papavgeris, the Young 'Uns, Workshy Profits, Vicky Swann and Jonny Dyer. Noe of these are ceilidh bands, but all are woth seeing, imho. Tim |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Anne Lister Date: 05 Jun 08 - 03:05 AM I'd recommend the QPs, who are sons and daughters of several other West Midlands musicians. Featuring my godson Matt Crum (who also plays with Peeping Tom, sometimes) and his brother Joe Crum (and both of them also play with Steam Chicken - who are DEFINITELY worth dancing to!). Anne |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Surreysinger Date: 04 Jun 08 - 09:55 PM Re one of the above suggestions, being a bit partisan, I can certainly recommend Housewives' Choice- great fun either to listen or to dance to - although at the moment they only seem to have one more gig (at the moment) in 2008, and that's in just over three weeks' time at the Traditional Festival in Preston on Saturday 28th June. |

Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Jun 08 - 06:00 PM Kerfuffle and their new record "To the Ground" will feature on "Thank Goodness IT's Folk" on Sheffield Live! this Friday. And they are damned good - But (slight tongue in cheek Les) this is their fourth album!! And they are also on Gate to Southwell - surprised you missed that one. Are they ever going to be booked at Faldingworth Live? (Pulls cheek below right eye). And the Boat Band are great - and thoroughly deserve their reviews. |

Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Def Shepard Date: 04 Jun 08 - 05:40 PM Then again there's Blue Horses from South Wales, or as they describe themselves, "a swaggering hybrid of Celtic (and occasionally) English folk, rock and metal) Blue Horses Unfortunately they won't be appearing at a festival near you, this year, as they've decided to take some time off, but give them a listen on their website |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: greg stephens Date: 04 Jun 08 - 05:35 PM Among dance bands the Boat Band has been getting very good reviews for its English dance tunes. Far be it for me to endorse these favourable comments, though.I will confine myself to saying the guitarist is very cute. Among new non-dance acts I have come across recently, the Young'Uns (a capella vocal) stand out head and shoulders above the rest. |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Jun 08 - 05:23 PM New Act for ceilidh dancing? Well there's Glorystrokes,,, Possibly the world's only traditional English metalcore dance band, GloryStrokes bring together some well known names from the UK folk dance scene with a cataclysmic dash through their skeleton riddled musical closets. Take two melodeons, add double kick drums, detuned guitars, beats, samples and weird keyboard noises and you're left with traditional music as it hasn't been heard before, bridging the barrier from barn dance to mosh pit" |
Subject: RE: What new acts are around festivals? From: Def Shepard Date: 04 Jun 08 - 04:50 PM Names that immediately come to mind are Tickled Pink, Tiger Moth, Blowzabella, The Demon Barber Roadshow Gloworms. Mr. Gubbin's Bicycle (John Kirkpatrick & Family) Token Women Housewives Choice |

Subject: What new acts are around festivals? From: Graham and Jo Date: 04 Jun 08 - 04:25 PM What good acts and ceilidh bands are around the folk festivals these days? Many years ago I used to go to folk festivals and there were certain popular acts that would come up and special things to look out for that I knew I would enjoy. I remember the Albion Band, the Oyster Band, Whippersnapper, Dab Hand, The old Swan Band, Gas Mark 5, Gina Le Faux, T-Jazz, Altan, Fairport Convention, DeDannan, The Watersons, Frankie Armstrong, Adrian May, Kitsyke Will, Strawhead, The Old Rope String Band, and on and on…. Many of these are still going, but they must have been joined by other new acts by now. I don't get to many folk festivals these days and wondered what new things are about. For example, are there any really good ceilidh bands to look out for? |
