Now you have got me thinking Josh and, having looked up the road in question it is not one I would like to walk these days... too much traffic. You might find this article interesting. Now I have found Little Alex I'm wondering where The Majestic was.

Might be a fool’s errand to post here after so many years, but I’m a Cockersdale fan from the US and I’m planning a trip to England this winter and I’ve been looking into the possibility of “doing the Manch” while I’m there. Sadly, it sounds like it’s not a possibility in 2023. Google tells me the Woodman, the Red Lion, and the White Swan still exist, so maybe I’ll swing by those and raise a pint to Keith! Then have a walk to Odsal Top to check for troops and tanks ????

Hi Dave

Yes to the Bradford questions - its now dual carriageway with one of the few guided bus ways in the country running along it. Don't know Rawtenstall I'm afraid!

Isn't the 'Manch' a shortening of Manchester? Is there a Manchester Road from Bratfut to Odsal Top? And is the Odsal Bottom in Rawtensatll annual fair the opposite of Odsal Top? I need to know these thigs!

Cheers

Dave

Sadly if anyone comes to Bradford to do the Manch they will find many of the pubs long gone and others closed - one is being dismantled bit by bit as I write this!

I can recommend a visit to the Topic Folk Club as compensation, or if it is not a Thursday pubs such as the Corn Dolly, Fighting Cock, Delius and New Beehive have much to recommend them! Followed by a curry of course

The Manch is just one of Keith Marsden's great songs and it was a tragic day indeed when we lost him. Roger Davies is carrying on the mantle of a superb West Yorkshire songwriter, and his 'Beer Belly Blues' is up there with Doin the Manch - check him out on MySpace or at the Topic on 4 September if you are within reach!

Cheers from rainy Bradford

Graham, you had some extra HTML stuff in there. Try Cockersdale. Graham is a wonderful person, and I highly recommend any of his group's recordings. I don't think there's a less-than-great cut on any of them.

Mick,

You are correct in that I will forgive you just about anything...heck, we always need to leave some room for improvement, even if it is .01% worth.

And as for beer in America...well, yes, your typical American brew (ie Macro brews that are known Nationwide) tend to be like coloured water and taste almost the same. HOWEVER and this is something I don't think I have stressed with you in our many chats, Mick, is that Micro breweries have become a big thing here in the last several years. There have even been places where you can go and brew your own brew--as I have done this. These macro brews are the most wonderful stuff to be able to try--strong colour and flavour! A far cry from the "typical stuff"...and alot of people like the imports and the better pubs usually carry a good selection of these brews...which is great cause I have a liking for Guinness. And I tried a good English beer the other day--Young's Luxury Double Chocolate Stout (The Ram Brewery, Wandsworth). Honestly it was really good.

So, if you are a "connoiseur" of beer, you CAN take your beer seriously here in the States.

Mick, I shall expect a summary of any good "tidbits" (yes, the American term) you get about Cockersdale, as you are the one I will blame for getting me interested in the first place!!!!

And Graham, thanks again for posting the lyrics!

Mary

This doesn't have anything to do with the song. I have my browser set to show brown clicky links, not blue. The ones in this thread start out as brown until about half the thread gets loaded, and then they all turn blue. Just in this thread. Sorry, it was too weird to just keep to myself.

I think we Brits use the term crawl because that's how we usually end up.. crawling..
The reason for this being and I know Mary will forgive me as she'll forgive me almost anything.. the beer here is a lot stronger than the otherpondsiders are used to.
On a totaly different but closely related subject, a ew months back when I was first "introduced" to Cockersdale and their music.. i.e. a friend of mine added some material on a tape he did for me.. yes boot leg if you like.. I was enthralled.. enough to go surfing to try and find out more about the group.
I only managed to find one site which was a kind of mini-bio of various English folk groups.. the most salient point re the "entry" re Cockersdale was that Keith and forgive me because I'm terrible at remembering names.. Mary will vouchsafe for this... hence lack of surname.. has been taken from us
And having read various posts as of late, I get the impression that you are one of the surviving members of Cockersdale.. now I apologise if I'm wrong in this assumption.. but if I'm correct then I'm only too keen to hold long and lengthy email conversations with you.. (providing you are willing of course)..(Mary it won't affect our our conversations).. so Graham because you may not want to give out your email address here.. can I prevail upon your generosity by contacting me at this address..
mick@prof.co.uk
Many thanks
Mick

Perhaps we crawl because Doin the Manch involves starting at the bottom of the hill in Bradford and heading uphill for two or more miles to Odsal Top! Sensible people would roll down!

Yes....that's an even better way of putting it. Actually, Bar Hopping or Pub Hopping are the more common terms here. I had drawn a blank when writing the above thread-I blame it on the hour of the evening (was midnight where I live).

Subject: Lyr Add: DOIN' THE MANCH (Marsden)
From: Graham Pirt
Date: 14 Nov 99 - 04:00 PM

Mary Kate

Here are the lyrics of DOIN' THE MANCH

DOIN' THE MANCH
(Keith Marsden)

I was eighteen when my dad first took me to a pub,
And I've never, ever seen him quite so mad.
"A pint of your usual, sir" the barman said,
But he was asking me, not Dad.
"Now if surfeiting the appetite will sicken and so die,
I'll not long have a boozer for a son.
They say there's twenty-seven pubs from here to Odsal Top
And tonight we'll have a pint in every one."
We kicked off at the Majestic. Little Alex kicked us out
When Dad said he was scared what he might catch.
We didn't mean to set on fire the White Swan and the Devonshire
But Dad was always careless with his match-es.
The Oddfellows knew we'd been. We caused a riot in the Queen,
But I was right till Dad said then:
"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin,
So we'll have to go back down and start again.

"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin,
So we'll go back down and do the Manch again."

We thought we'd make a start with a quiet game of darts
Before we'd gone a beer too far,
But we were slinging arrows in the Albany snug,
And the board was in the public bar.
There were arrows in the ceiling. There were arrows in the walls.
There were arrows in the barmaid's thigh,
Till a very ugly landlord with a very ugly club
Suggested we should both go forth and multiply.
Broken glasses they were counting as we slipped out of the Fountain
And the Toll Bar crowd were still in hot pursuit.
In the fighting, father all but killed the landlord of the Talbot
When the silly bugger criticised his suit.
And we were walking on our knees by the time we reached the Fleece,
But I was right till Dad said then:
"Like it, lad, or lump it, we have missed the Horse and Trumpet,
So we'll have to go back down and start again.

"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin.
Like it, lad, or lump it we have missed the Horse and Trumpet,
So we'll go back down and do the Manch again."

Just then we chanced to meet a young lady of the street,
And Lord, had she some lovely wares to sell!
Unfortunately, Dad was somewhat sick upon her dog,
For after fourteen pints he wasn't feeling well.
As he searched for his teeth, he found the dog underneath,
Jumped back and knocked the poor woman flat.
"I've had pork pies, pints, pickled eggs and peas tonight,
But I can't remember eating that!"
Well, the Station and the Junction then both showed us no compunction
When they threw us in the street upon our ears.
We'd all sorts of hell on in the New Inn and the Nelson,
And we had the Wickham landlord close to tears.
As newts we were pissed as when we staggered into Listers
But I was right till Dad said then:
"Trouble now of course is, we forgot t'Waggon and Horses,
So we'll have to go back down and start again.

"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin.
Like it, lad, or lump it, we have missed the Horse and Trumpet.
Trouble now of course is, we forgot t'Waggon and Horses,
So we'll go back down and do the Manch again."

Then Dad pinched a bulldozer so that we could ride in style,
But he flattened three police cars straight away.
His driving wasn't polished and in no time he'd demolished
Hong Kong Harry's corner Chinese take-away.
As the Chinee with his chopper chased us up to Chellow Street,
His nearness to my necktie wasn't nice.
When my breath began to steady, I said, "He were mad enough already.
Did you have to order curried cat and rice?"
We had Whitbread's. We had Webster's. We had Hammond's. We had Hey's.
We had John Smith's and Sam Smith's too.
We were right bloody gluttons with some OBJ by Dutton's
And Bass both red and blue.
We had Inde Coope and Allsop's and some Ramsden's that was all slops,
But I was right till Dad said then:
"We missed out all the Bentley's. We've not had a drop of Tetley's,
So we'll have to go back down and start again.

"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin.
Like it, lad, or lump it, we have missed the Horse and Trumpet.
Trouble now of course is, we forgot t'Waggon and Horses.
We missed out all the Bentley's. we've not had a drop of Tetley's,
So we'll go back down and do the Manch again."

The police with a van cleared the Yorkshire Divan,
The landlord and his wife and kids as well.
The Foresters was quiet. There was not a sign of riot,
For the customers were all inside the cells.
There were Specials running up the street and firemen running down.
Troops and tanks were standing by at Odsal Top.
Some nuns who came to pray for peace just stayed to sober up the priest
Who'd got so drunk he tried to kiss a cop.
There was still a hue and cry in both the Woodman and Red Lion,
And the Craven Heifer tried to bar the door.
We thought we might get drunk if we'd another in the Truncliffe
So we thought we'd better have one to be sure.
As we fell through the doors, on all fours at Mary Shaws,
I was right till Dad said then:
"You can have a little rest, now you're halfway through the test.
Then we'll have to go back down and start again.

"We should have had a nip in the Blue Lion and the Griffin.
Like it, lad, or lump it, we have missed the Horse and Trumpet.
T'trouble now of course is, we forgot t'Waggon and Horses.
We missed out all the Bentley's. We've not had a drop of Tetley's.
You can have a little rest, now you're halfway through the test,
Then we'll go back down and do the Manch again."

Hope I got all the line breaks in the correct place!

Graham
