Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Fortunato Date: 26 Nov 99 - 11:55 AM Folk/Music Lover Talking about sex with a lover can enhance the experience if you have matured beyond the wanker stage. Talking about music as we do here can enhance the experience of listening or playing if you have the ability to grasp the concepts put forward. And anyone is welcome to come or to go. We don't shoot assholes. Lucky you. Fortunato

Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Jeri Date: 26 Nov 99 - 09:28 AM Larry O'Gaff and Soldier's Joy are alike in that we remember the tunes, but have (mostly) forgotten the songs. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Date: 26 Nov 99 - 12:45 AM Larry O G is in 6/8th timing and the Soldier's is either a q step or h pipe in quarter timing there is absolutely no relation between them except the common key of D major. Perhaps somebody has misnamed the Soldier's Joy?? |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: paddymac Date: 26 Nov 99 - 12:02 AM Jeri - thanks! got to get that one into repertoire. LTS - I recall a popular (well, at least I liked it) comedy song in the c&w genre 20 or so years ago called "I would'a wrote you a letter but I couldn't spell Yeccccch!" Might be the inspiration for your young one's fav. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Jeri Date: 25 Nov 99 - 09:32 AM Thanks, Bruce. I learned "Larry O'Gaff" as a fiddle tune and had no idea there was a song. I wonder how many other tunes once had lyrics that have been dropped or forgotten. I got excited the first time I found the song "Starry Night for a Ramble," but I have yet to sing it anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Bruce O. Date: 24 Nov 99 - 10:42 PM Jeri, you can find the song of "Larry O'Gaff" on the Bodley Ballads website. It's like "The Solder's Joy", unforgetable tune, but one of those songs that are most deservedly forgotten. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: DougR Date: 23 Nov 99 - 11:03 PM Folk/Music Lover: No problemo, just use the database, and don't bothe with the rest of the stuff. I enjoy the diversity of views in the BS threads, and I've learned a lot from those threads devoted to music. It's all based on free choice; participate or don't,as you choose. I've found some wonderful friends on the Mudcat that I will probably never meet face to face, and have gained much by tuning in. If it's not your bag, tune out. It appears to me, based on the tone of your message, that you enjoy stirring the pot. Well, I repeat, no problemo. DougR |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: dick greenhaus Date: 23 Nov 99 - 04:47 PM It's probably a good thing that everone who visits Mudcat doesn't care for everything that's there, or s/he wouldn't have time to do anything else. Between record sales, DigiTrad, radio shows, auctions, and all the rest, it's nice to be able to pick and choose among the goodies. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: lloyd61 Date: 23 Nov 99 - 04:44 PM F/M L I don't understand, are you Folk, a Musician, or a lover? If your folk you should enjoy the common Folk Threads. If your a musician, please add content to our threads. We look forward to hearing from you. If your a lover, maybe your at the wrong site. All kidding aside, stick around and you will meet some incredible people with a wealth of knowledge and skills. I may feel like a klutz around them but I enjoy every thread.

If I were less boring (If you don't have anything good to say, at least try to make it rhyme.)

Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 Nov 99 - 08:24 AM Well, in all seriousness, there are some of us out here who only have rare and occasional access to the folk scene, I live in London, and you'd expect there to be something around wouldn't you. My nearest folk club, is 5 miles away, which, thanks to the vagaries of London Transport, makes it an hour or more travelling time. Hell, I've taken an hour to get across my own borough, a total of about 2 miles!! If I drive my car, I have to pay extortionate parking rates, if indeed I can find anywhere to park for longer than three minutes if there isn't a 'Y' in the day. I socially see, on average, the same four people each week, and I don't have work colleagues to interact with. So here I am, having social intercourse, complete with all the innuendo and hilarity that I used to have with my workmates, and it has stopped me from wanting to damage either myself or my daughter. And if it makes people feel that way, then it is a good thing. I've found the lyrics to several songs that I hadn't heard for years, and replaced one that I didn't realise I'd forgotten until a similar song was posted. Although the conversation is not exclusively music or folk (we know both kinds here, country and western), I bet you all the chocolate in my local shop that any folk club you go to or festival you attend, will be talking about almost anything BUT music. In the words of Billy Connolly (and at my daughters example to other naughty children) - I'd write you a letter but I couldn't spell thsssssssssssssssssssppppp!!! (raspberry noise). LTS |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: John of the Hill Date: 22 Nov 99 - 09:27 PM I think the Mudcat is more like watching paint dry. If I get real close to my monitor I can even pick up the fumes. Sometimes I get giddy, sometimes I just get a headache... but I always come back for more. John |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Little Neophyte Date: 22 Nov 99 - 09:18 PM Folk/Music Lover I've always believed in the saying "if you have nothing good to say, don't say it." Right now, I'm not sure if that old saying applies to you or me? Banjo Bonnie |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Nov 99 - 08:51 PM We don't get many "jokers" like that, do we? That's one thing I like about Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: paddymac Date: 22 Nov 99 - 08:33 PM Jeri - your "creation" was/is absolutely brilliant. And what melody do you suggest we use? |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Mudjack Date: 22 Nov 99 - 06:11 PM FM/Lover Thank you for your visit and most of all, Thank you for passing through and for not taking the time to appreciate the reason the data base is so great."Dah" Mudjack |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: MMario Date: 22 Nov 99 - 01:16 PM My apologies -- I am feeling very prickly lately - and am being a bit more outspoken about it then normal -- and I am not normally very shy about voicing my opinons, as you all know! However; If the shoe pinches your foot, don't bother complaining if you are the one who chose to wear it. MMario |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Bert Date: 22 Nov 99 - 01:00 PM Well said Alan. F/M Lover, generally speaking, all talking amongst friends is of little interest to someone who is outside the group. You will find the same thing with any community that you are not a part of. Stay awhile, get to know us, and you'll find us more interesting. We'll also give you a hard time unless you are more careful with your choice of words when talking about sex. Bert. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Lonesome EJ Date: 22 Nov 99 - 12:57 PM FML...you mean you nod off during sex too? It may not be you partner alone who is at fault. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Jeri Date: 22 Nov 99 - 12:48 PM It's conversation, not entertainment. Maybe somebody better wake up FML and ask him what he wants to talk about. ("uhh...I dunno...zzz..something more interesting, you know,...(yawn)...stuff.")
Oh talk about something |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Night Owl Date: 22 Nov 99 - 12:33 PM I DO believe that "zzzzzzz" can be a good defense against letting other people get too close...whether talking about sex or life...or the emotions music brings out in us. Thanks for the complements..FML...to the depth of the Forum and Mudcatters!!!! |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: MMario Date: 22 Nov 99 - 12:12 PM I find it sad that some people find interacting with other people to be boring. I find it even dadder that they seem to take some kind of perverse pleasure in informing other people of that fact. On the other hand, it must be SO much less bother for them to look something up in a database, where you don't have to bother with any kind of social nicety, or actually involve oneself with anyone else, especially those people who are contributing (or trying to contribute) to that database. In fact, one can even download the database, then have to undergo *shudder* the boring human contact only every six months or so in order to remain current. offense intended. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Jack (who is called Jack) Date: 22 Nov 99 - 12:05 PM F/ML I sympathize to a certain extent. On the other hand, this party's been going on for approximately 1000 days, and lots of the most intersting conversations have already gone by the wayside. You came in late. Not your fault but there it is. |
Subject: RE: Watching grass grow From: Allan C. Date: 22 Nov 99 - 11:48 AM The Mudcat is us. We are, ourselves, responsible for the content of the forum, my friend. If you want something exciting, post something exciting! |
Subject: Watching grass grow From: Folk/Music Lover Date: 22 Nov 99 - 11:41 AM I've tried. Truly I have, from time to time, to take an intereszzz Oops sorry. To take an er, an errrr, Oh! an interstttzzz... Sorry. An involvement in your Forum. Andzzzzzzzz. Sorry. ZZzzzz I just keep nodding off. Perhaps sex and your FORUM have something in common. Talking about it SUCKS. Or it does 90+(something)% of the time. Just my opinion, of course. On the other hand the database is brilliant....
