Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Apr 02 - 10:39 PM Click here for a list of songs that were performed on the Prairie Home Companion on Saturday, May 19, 2001. The description given is
Garrison Keillor, Richard Dworsky w: Galatians 6:14 text arranged by: Isaac Watts m: traditional, arranged by Lowell Mason It is a peculiarity of Minnesota that "aunt" is pronounced "awnt" here, although just about all other Midwesterners say "ant." GK, I don't need to tell you, grew up here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: IvanB Date: 26 May 01 - 01:30 PM Gypsy, my ears are midwestern, so antz is what I mostly hear also, although I have an adopted son who's as midwestern as I but has always pronounced it ahnt. I figure it must have been an influence from one of his foster homes. Don't think we need a JoeClone for this. I'll just put it all together: Whose hands are these, all rough and hard? Nails all torn, from toil and care Who kept the gar-den, the house and the yard Touched my cheek, and smoothed my hair Bless-ed be the aunts of peace Bless-ed their voices, the songs they sung. Blessed are their arms and their hands and their knees All who loved us, when we were young The Lord's my shep-herd, I'll not want By the still waters, I walk with my own Waters so still and the pasture so green Goodness and mer-cy, following me

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: katlaughing Date: 26 May 01 - 01:44 AM Not if they're Eastern Americun earz! Everybody back there thought I sounded funny when I called them "antz"! Got the midi, Ivan, thanks a bunch! Gypsy, if you're still willing, I would still like to hear GK's singing of it, too. You phoaks are the best! kat |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: IvanB Date: 26 May 01 - 01:38 AM I think the first two lines of the second verse of Garrison's version are: Blessed be the aunts of peace Blessed their voices, the songs they sung. He pronounces 'aunts' 'Ahnts,' which could cause the mishearing for Americanized ears. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: IvanB Date: 26 May 01 - 01:28 AM The first line as GK sang it is "Whose hands are these, all rough and hard?" Actually, I was incorrect in my earlier attribution. The tune is 'Hamburg' by Lowell Mason, the words to 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," are by Isaac Watts. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? His dying crimson, like a robe, Spreads o'er His body on the tree; Then I am dead to all the globe, And all the globe is dead to me. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small: Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. I'm having a little trouble with the Mid2Txt output right now. I'll post the tune when I get it straightened out. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: katlaughing Date: 26 May 01 - 12:32 AM Thank you, everyone!! I will indeed work this one up as it was so beautiful and had a lot of menaing for me, as he was talking about "aunties" in this context. **GREAT BIG SMILE** plastered on my face! Gypsy, got your message, blank tapes going out tomorrow. She captured it for me, phoaks, so I can learn the tune. Ivan, I would love to know more, if you find it, please do post it. Thanks a bunch! kat |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: IvanB Date: 26 May 01 - 12:27 AM The tune is "When I survey the Wondrous Cross by Isaac Watts. I'm sure it's available online. I'll post it as soon as I can find it. If it's not online, I'm sure I must have it in one of the old hymnals I have. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Wat From: Gypsy Date: 25 May 01 - 10:17 PM Yes, indeedy, it was! Kat, the first line got eaten up by the leader, but here is the rest. I vote that we officially give it your posted name for it, to make life easier.
BY THE STILL WATERS
-------------------------------(?)
Bless-ed be, the onset of peace
The Lord's my shep-herd, I'll not want On second thought, considering the context that he was speaking of prior to singing this, perhaps the title should be "When we were young" Loverly singing Kat, i'll be sending ye a wee message. Look for it. Everyone else, the tune is really similar to "Faith of our fathers" |

Subject: & midi - heard on PHC - By Still Waters? From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 01 - 11:47 PM Garrison sang this song at the end of the show, while telling a story about his old aunt who liked lilacs. It sounded like a hymn and was beautiful I'd like to learn it for the dulcimer. It made me cry. Some of the words included: Bless all who loved us when we were young...and then, something about By Still Waters I need the tune, too, if anyone has it. Thanks! kat |
