MARTIAN AIR FORCE DENIES STORIES OF UFO CRASH

Gusev Crater, Tarus 23, XXVI (MPI) -- A spokesthing for Mars Air Force denounced as false rumors that an alien space craft crashed in the desert, outside of Ares Vallis on Saturday.

Appearing at a press conference today, General Rgrmrmy The Lesser stated that "the object was, in fact, a harmless high-altitude weather balloon, not an alien spacecraft".

The story broke late Saturday night when a major stationed at nearby Ares Vallis Air Force Base contacted the Gusev Crater Daily Record with a story about a strange, balloon-shaped object which allegedly came down in the nearby desert, "bouncing" several times before coming to a stop, and "deflating in a sudden explosion of alien gases."

Minutes later, General Rgrmrmy contacted the Daily Record telepathically to contradict the earlier report. General Rgrmrmy stated that hysterical stories of a detachable vehicle roaming across the Martian desert were blatant fiction, provoked by incidences involving swamp gas. But the general public has been slow to accept the Air Force's explanation of recent events, preferring to speculate on the "other-worldly" nature of the crash debris. Conspiracy theorists have condemned Rgrmrmy's statements as evidence of "an obvious government cover-up," pointing out that Mars no longer has any swamps.

They point to the release of secret government memos detailing attempts to discredit reports of the landings by alien space craft.

Local residents, like Driv Rhodo, who lives in the area of the alleged landings, are even more skeptical. "I seen it with my own 5 eyes" claimed Rhodo last week. "I've lived here over 300 years, most of my adult life-form. Them things used to be few and far between but lately they come in every few years or so. The government wants to bury the truth but I can tell you what's real. The Earthlings are going to invade and the government is spending our hard earned tax dollars on press releases and denials instead of preparing for the battle to come."

A spokesthing denied any government involvement in the disappearance of Rhodo, who has not been seen since shortly after the interview, claiming "Any sentient being knows that a planet with the concentrations of water and oxygen found on Earth is a deadly and inhospitable environment for the formation of life, much less intelligent life. The fear and consternation caused by the unfounded and wild speculations of citizens like Rhodo are a traitorous disservice to the citizens of Mars."

Flytipping - a guy with a pickup truck of stuff - old brickwork, concrete chunks, general rubble can't be bothered to use the official dump so looks for a roadside, farmer's gateway, bit of apparently unused land, and tips out his rubble there, and then flits fast. He tips on the fly, I suppose. It can be very organised. Large trucks big enough for collecting grain from combines full of builders waste working in pairs to break into locked areas. Or disorganised. One guy emptying waste paint from his boot into a verge and all over the road. It is very antisocial, and illegal. Few fines though, as they don't get caught.

In this case, Mars Rovers fly there, and have then, effectively, been tipped.

Penny

Once a Martian Lander, landed in a crater bed
Bounced up and down, like a ping - pong ball
Out popped a rover, soaking up the martian sun
Who'll come aroving to examine the spall

We have missed the Mars Rover for many a year,
It went shooting away from our planet so dear,
Leaking test-os-ta-rone as it sailed to the stars,
Because girls are from Venus, and boys are from Mars

From: Mark Dowding - PM

No nay never no more
Will we hear from the Beagle
No never no more

It rolls on the rocks and it rolls in the sand.
Following orders from its earthbound command.
Seeking new worlds while boldly it goes
Shooting taxpayers dollars out from its retros.

I've had this idea, it isn't a crock,
We'll build a Mars Rover from out of a wok,
We'll get Damien to paint it, a call sign by Blur,
A true British triumph will cook up a stir.

From: Micca - PM
Date: 06 Jan 04 - 01:57 PM

It went to a planet we never frequent
when landed we found the antenna was bent
we gave it a call, but answer came nay
our million pound Beagle is dead as the clay

and its so quiet Beagle
on the Red Planet Mars
I think that the Beagle
Is a right load of Arse

so Next time your easy with 10 million pounds

we'll help you soft land with your ariel un-bent
and know you will think that your moneys well spent

From: Charley Noble - PM

(some interesting scientific data - MM)

The names for the two US Mars rovers are "Spirit" and "Opportunity." The Spirit landed safely January 4th and Opportunity is scheduled to land January 25, but on the opposite side of the planet. Now it seems clear to me that these two rovers should "roll & go" so to speak till they can congregate, and hoefully produce some offspring. Maybe this will inspire some more verses.
From: brucie - PM
Date: 06 Jan 04 - 08:34 PM

Martians watched anxiously as she sailed in,
They said, "That's the Spirit", she's one of a twin;

We called it; we cursed it, but answer came nought

A-Rovin' On Mars.

Once there was an Englishman, he had a beard so rare,
Got his Meccano set and played around one day.
He shot it off to Mars, to see if he could see what's there,
And on the journey, it took many a day.

Chorus:
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars, little earthlings,
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me.
A-rovin' on Mars, and leadin' all a merry chase,
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

Now the journey out was uneventful,
.....
..............
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

the landing was simple, bounce a ball
.....
..............
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

but the surface of mars is full of craters
... wouldn't matter if we knew ....
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

They tried to talk to it
They made attempts: one, two, three.
..............
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

And so it came pass, all on a starry night,
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?
Now its voice can't be heard, all among the stars so bright,
Who'll come a-rovin' on Mars with me?

I do hope that Spirit Rover's "self-destruct" command is radically different than "roll and go" or "roll over" for that matter.

I still have bad memories of the old Alien computer game where the cabin light button on the ship's control panel was next to, and identical to, the self-destruct button...

Sandy-

Nice set of verses and chorus!

Now someone needs to edit what's been posted, and maybe make more sense out of it. There's at least 3 separate themes going on.

Meanwhile Opportunity isn't due to land until January 25th. This could still be a tragic ballad. The loss of Beagle II is not, of course, a tragedy. Beagles always wander off; it's in their nature.

Well, here's going back to the original parody. This is the last verse, and someone else needs to fill in the scandalous things that preceded it:

I'll upload to NASA, confess what I've done,

Oh dear me! It seems that everything is degenerating into parodies of any song that has the word "Rover" in it. Come to think of it, that won't be too much of a problem, but when I started this thread I was secretly hoping to come out of this with enough singable verses to transform the usual singing of "Wild Rover" by most people's weekend get togethers. For some reason my mind is blank tonight but I love all of this love-making intrigue and imagery.

She silently slid to a rest near the rocks,
Next time no surprise, for Opportunity knocks.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It went to a planet we never frequent
when landed we found the antenna was bent
we gave it a call, but answer came nay
our million pound Beagle is dead as the clay

and its so quiet Beagle
on the Red Planet Mars
I think that the Beagle
Is a right load of Arse

so Next time your easy with 10 million pounds
come to Mudcat Tavern and buy a few rounds
we'll help you soft land with your ariel un-bent
and know you will think that your moneys well spent

I've had this idea, it isn't a crock,
We'll build a Mars Rover from out of a wok,
We'll get Damien to paint it, a call sign by Blur,
A true British triumph will cook up a stir.

It rolls on the rocks and it rolls in the sand.
Following orders from its earthbound command.
Seeking new worlds while boldly it goes
Shooting taxpayers dollars out from its retros.

How about a parody-rewrite to the tune of "The Wild Rover" on the topic of the Mars Rover. We've all been hearing so much about it in the news. Come-on everybody! Make up some verses and a chorus to get the ball rolling...

We have missed the Mars Rover for many a year,
It went shooting away from our planet so dear,
Leaking test-os-ta-rone as it sailed to the stars,
Because girls are from Venus, and boys are from Mars
