Spat what spat? Arn't we both saying the same thing but from different angles - welllllll no probably not. However I thhink we are both right in some respects.

I suppose I am a bit intollerant of things that I don't like (but hey that's my right) but being a piper I am also aware that pipes are not people's favourite instrument and their very presence in a session can cause people all kinds of problems. I am aware of that and adjust the amount that I contribute to a session accordingly.

It was once written that a piper should play no more than 4 sets in a session inorder not to upset people - I tend to stick to that, I could play all night. I try to be considerate can the same be said of someone who sings a 40 verse dirge?

I prefer the full version myself. 52 verses of paralysing e minor stodge at a snail's pace or nothing. Rocks my boat every time. Ask Gary about one of my previous musical incarnations. But not on here. Promise?

It has to be a shower you walk out of for it to be a dream, Oakers.

Hmmmm, playing an accordion and having a voice like a goose farting in a fog, I feel eminently well qualified to sit in judgement on this one, as everyones' least favourite sessioneer.

And my judgement is............. sessions evolve. I came to the Nag's Head session in Wootton in '97, and I now know it was during a time of change. It was a hard-core tune session of a very high standard of play. Then, it came about that an acapella version of Wheel of Fortune was sung by the entire pub whilst the musos put their fiddles away. Then a good frined of mine started attending, and did the odd song, to a fairly silent accompaniment. Slowly, the hot-shot musicians fell away (allegedly stating it had become too songy) and it has now evolved into a new, equally happy incarnation of mostly tunes, some songs, and a happy enough atmosphere for a Sunday night.

So I find in favour of both parties, in that Mick's credentials as a musician make him elligible to do his hallmark roof-raising at the Hase, and John in his difficult mission with quality control disengaging piss poor performers, both vocal and instrumental. As John says, both parties are essentially saying the same thing.

So I propose a visit from the mounted division of the 'Helmets, supported by D Division of Humberside Whistles, at the next official Hase gathering, to rattle our tambourine with the best of you both.

I'll bring Doug, too. A week is a long time in Mudcat.....

Garfield.

splendid post Gary, my love. I hope that the protagonists can hear above the white noise. DEFRA livestock returns cannot be done with a 56K modem; and I have just walked out of the shower.

Which reminds me that Nelly's on the 8th September could be just a rehearsal for Wooton in terms of naked bicycling. And it should still be warm enough to obviate the use of cock rings!

Well it seems a good time to put in my two small copper coins' worth. As someone who enjoys both singing and playing tunes, I will continue to haunt both types of session. I was aware that some people thought that Sunday's Nellies session was a bit more 'tuney' than usual. Nothing wrong with that, I think. I just hope that we don't get divided into two camps.

I think that we're really in agreement here. Maggie probably wouldn't go to the Hase for instance, as she enjoys singing sessions most, but she is working on her guitar accompaniments and whistle playing in the hope that she can play a full part in a tune session in time.

I really enjoyed the only time I went to the Hase, although we were short handed that night. I will be back.

Of course, my favourite is accompanied singing. It's great for a singer to get quality accompaniment at a session, and so my tip to anyone who wants to sing at a session that normally has mostly tunes is to sing the kind of song that can be accompanied in a key that the musicians can play in. It might help if the song and the key and the fact that instrumentalists are invited are announced before. Hopefully the musicians will understand that accompanying doesn't just consist of playing the tune, and will play to support the singer. It also helps if the singer chooses a song with a well-known tune and has a voice that can carry above the instruments. And it goes without saying that Ossonflags has these attributes in spades.

And if you're a tune player that has wandered into a mainly song session, tell the people about your tunes. Hopefully that will make people more interested in listening and less likely to talk over them. You're including them as listeners, you see.

The Friday Kingston session will continue to be tunes and songs and everything else that goes along with it. But that session will always depend on who turns up.

I have tried to be helpful here, from the position of someone who has a foot in both camps. I'll get off this soapbox now before it collapses under the weight of my words.

Les

don't want to start a punch up but I have long contended that singers and musicians are genetically different and should be kept as far apart as possible. Of course there are people who are part singer and part musicians -these are referred to as transsexuals.

Thank you Gary and Lez for the sense that is obvious.

Quality control is important and believe it or not I am in favour of giving everyone the chance to show what they can do, if in my opinion they are worth encouraging then I will encourage them and help them in any way I can (short of lending them money) if they are piss poor I will support them too - it might be by pointing them in a different direction but I will not just trash them I will support them.

Ossenflaggs you are welcome to sing at the hase any time you want to. Provided that you pm me with how much PTH go out for as I am trying to persuade the landlady of the said Hase to book you for a gig.

Peace brother?

Well I have just read this whole thread again (i have read it all 3 times since I got in!) and I agree with Oaklet that Les from Hull (no relation, although we share the same last name) makes good sense, and has writed a good message, Mick is a fine singer, as anyone who as been to Nellies or the Tap will know, and John of the smallpipes is a very good piper, as anyone that has been to the Hase on a Tuesday will already know.Like Les, my favourite type of session is mixed ie songs and tunes, thats why, although I hav'nt been for a while because of work commitments, I always try to get to The Kingston whenever I can, in fact, I might pull a sickie, and go there tonight! As folk music is pretty much a minority interest, I feel it is important that we try to encourage each other and welcome new people to sessions. To me the whole idea of a music/song session is for people to get together and have fun, whilst keeping music live.

How about a few of us get together at a MIXED session, either The Kingston (Fridays) or The Tap & Spile (sundays) , both mixed sessions, that way we can perhaps try to integrate the Hull, Hessle and Beverley crowd, who knows maybe a few of the Lincolnshire crowd as well, Gary & Oaklet etc"!
What do you say guys?

Well has'nt this been great!!!!!

A simple request for information about a music session prompted a great debate, and I mean DEBATE.Every one giving there opinions in a well thought out and positive manner.

as you say ,smallpiper, spat what spat?

My intention was not to enter into a battle of instramentalists against singers,it was all about evry body with something to offer been given a fair chance.

like les my ideal session is a good mixture of tune's,unnacompanied singing and accompanied singing. Excuse me for a while, just brushing a small tear from the corner of my eye.You he have all restored my faith in human nature, and at the risk of sounding like an old softy for the second time this week, have made an old man very, very happy with the kind things you have said about me.

The cross town/village/ county music alliance idea is great.

If this has done nothing else, hasnt it shown the begrudgers out there that we are ALL deeply passionate about what we do to KEEP MUSIC LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Brother Small piper,peace and respect.

To all of you a massive thanks.

Hope to see most of you at Whitby,I shall be camping in john and rosies.fantastic bear emporium.(9and stoup cross)

Well said Mick, you old softy! See you at Whitby. I reckon we should have a chat with Theresa after Whitby, and try to organise a sesion in The Tap, on either the second or third Sunday of the month, (the Tap & Spile is within easy staggering distance for me & Mick!) I am sure all singers/musicians would be welcome, if anybody is interested in this idea please reply to the new thread called Punch The Horse Part 99, as this one is now getting too long.cheers.john

A cross region alliance sounds like a great idea and would even go as far as to suggest that we do it to revieve the ailing Tap & Spile session which is (I believe)in mortal danger.

A mixed song and instrumental session with respect being given in all directions and encouragement for beginners/improvers but keeping the session feel (i.e. no applause, lots of bear and plenty of fun)I'm up for it.

After Wibby?

peace, bear and respect to you to ossenflags

Well, what a great conversation! Have not been on for a couple of days. I don't have anything to contribute on the subject that has not been eloquently expressed by my peers already. I have my feet firmly in both camps. I love to sing, and I thoroughly enjoy accompanying the tune-meisters also.

I was aware of the unusual balance of musicians v singers at Nellies on Sunday, and in my capacity as m/c tried my best to accommodate all to everyones satisfaction. I hope I managed to acheive that. If that wasn't a mixed session, then I don't know what is. We sang. We played. We had bear. We had fun. That's what it is all about for me. My sincere thanks to all who attended. May there be many more enjoyable days like that.

Personally, I was extremely pleased to see so many musicians for a change. It has been said often of my session (by musicians) that they don't want to attend due to the high number of singers. It has also been said (by audience/pub regulars) that it can be a bit too finger-in-yer-ear depressing. This is an image that I wish to eradicate. There is room for everyone. I hope you all come back in September.

Once again, many thanks. Peter Dean.

Thats great!!! Just think, from a little misunderstanding, we can all werk together and hopefully start another monthly music/song session in the area! But PLEASE REPLY TO THE NEW THREAD! (this one is getting too long, and many people don't bother reading threads once they are over 100 messages).cherrs.john

I find the best sessions contain an equal mix of songs, tunes and naked bicycling with smoke, but there aren't as many of those sessions as there should be.
