Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Apr 08 - 12:10 PM For US/Versus viewers, I believe this will be the first game of the present series we've been able to catch. Since the Versus plan to cover the Pens/Sens game is off (due to EL SWEEPO), I believe they plan to go Canadien. Maybe they will even do it by buying the Cdn feed as they do for some of the late-night games-- we can only hope. GO HABS! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 19 Apr 08 - 12:43 PM Marty Should have shook hands. Its the NHL front office that is to blame. The referees should be calling that crap. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Apr 08 - 02:07 PM They are calling that crap. IMO all Marty did with his shunning was (A) encourage Avery and (B) confirm that Avery had gotten into his head. Marty is the king of hot-headedly vulnerable goalie reactions, when it comes to crease incursions. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: gnu Date: 19 Apr 08 - 02:20 PM So... Avery was in the crease and it wasn't called? |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 19 Apr 08 - 02:23 PM Obviously they are not calling that crap enough. The referees are tight all year then the playoffs come and they back off. They especially back off when the goons are playing for a team in a big media market. Marty should have shook hands. But Avery should not have got away with what he was doing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: gnu Date: 19 Apr 08 - 02:33 PM Ah... therein lies the rub. Perhaps Marty should have been coached by The Gump. He tore up a few tendons in his day. These kids dunno enough to file down the top of the blade. Not that I would approve of that. >;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Apr 08 - 04:30 PM The last 2 years (post-lockout), the referees seem to have tried various ways of calling crease crashes during the playoffs, and this year HAS seemed less consistent than last year so far. But it doesn't help a goalie when his D-men are nowhere in reach, either. The Devils had to choose between staying up-ice on offense versus playing their usual shut-down D-game-- with the result that they scored more goals than ever before (or it seemed that way to me), but they didn't give Marty their usual close support. (I know the New NHL rules severely limit what the D can DO around the crease, but to do anything at all they have to BE there.) Avery had far, FAR too much leeway from the D. You can't do both 100% for 60 minutes, and you can't pick one and still win a playoff series. This year, to try to deal with the "new" rules, the popular and winning team strategy seems to focus on forwards playing "responsibly" (defensively) around their own net. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 20 Apr 08 - 02:54 PM That is a lot of work Susan. Great job. The only series that I can really judge is the Habs vs Boston. Just because those are the regular televised games where I live. The others are the bits and pieces I pick up and listen to on the Internet. In what i have seen the Brunes deserve to win against the Canadians. The only game in my opinion that the Habs deserved to win was the first one. All other games belonged to the Brunes. But with a hot goalie the reverse has happened. As far as the Wings are concerned, I did get to see the last game they played and they deserved to win but it had to go to overtime because of goalie Mr. Ellis. The other games I can't comment on other than wishing they had won. Now I will make my self a cup of tea and settle back and watch the Wings as they are on T.V. covered by C.B.C. "Here is hoping . Go You Red Sweethearts Go". |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 20 Apr 08 - 10:14 PM Hey Big Mick - I love that mobile thread. The Wings looked pretty good today in playing as a unit, keeping up the intensity and not getting into stupid penalty situations. I am such a "homer," but they are a really good team and I love their puck control game. Man, it is just thrilling when Pavel or Zetti get that puck and drive the net; and the rest of the guys are just,...well,...I'm a homer, what can I say except here comes the next round, hold on and let's see what the boys can do. GO RED WINGS! Cheers. |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Apr 08 - 10:43 AM TG, that's exactly how we feel about cheering for mutiple teams. GO HOCKEY! What I hope, for the Pens, is that whoever they play in succeeding weeks takes a huge role in the ongoing curriculum Therrien is using for this team. (I know some people will not only hope for, but expect, a Cup this year, but that's just a sign of today's WalMartization of the culture. In hockey, you still have to work for your success. The Pens are a learning, playing group of professionals, not a commodity called "Cup Winner" that can be yanked off the shelf at Wally World along with nachos and dip.) ... Because what's truly exciting about following that team is witnessing the development. In ministry and in training FOR the ministry, in our denomination we talk of it in terms of "formation." Education is part of formation but there is so much more. Seeing it as it occurs is a wonderful thing. So win or lose, what I want this Cup drive to do for the Pens is to add into their formation. Ryan Malone is one example of this formation. Maxime Talbot is an earlier example-- he was slated to stay in the AHL with one more chance to move up, and he took that chance, welcomed the formation, and is a huge part now of their success. Another example is BGL (Big Georges Laraque). Therrien turned an enforcer who longed to play hockey, who had become known as a "huggy-bear" (AKA disappointing fighter), into the hockey player he longed to be. He gave him the tools and the opportunity to become part of the scoring juggernaut. BGL responded by getting into the best playing condition of his career, quickening his puck handling, joining rushes up ice, and scoring. These are not accidents of happening to play with wildly talented Crosby and Malkin, anymore than Crosby's success is a result of mere talent. They are the deliberately-achieved results of Therrien's approach to developing-- forming-- hockey players. I used to worry about whether Therrien would have a useful career once the team had reached its peak-- could he coach beyond the initial formation of his young players? Seeing what he did with the fodder from the farm team, when the Pens had horrible injury trouble-- I don't worry about that anymore. Seeing what he does with Gary Roberts-- priceless. GO THERRIEN! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: topical tom Date: 22 Apr 08 - 05:19 PM Sorry about the Bruins (grin)! With the goal-tending of Carey Price, the rugged defence, and the lightning-fast forwards, I can see the Canadians going a long way. VIVE LES CANADIENS! |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 22 Apr 08 - 05:30 PM I can see the Canadians in it until they face the Rangers or Pittsburgh. For a while I thought that Cary might be as good as Dryden and Roy in their rookie years. But I think that if he was, the series against the Bruins would have been shorter. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 22 Apr 08 - 05:57 PM Topical tom I do understand your want of another series victory, but it gets tougher as the goal gets closer. The Canadians last night deserved to win and win they did, but I predict that this will be the last series they win for this year. Now I won't say I'll eat my hat if I'm wrong because I know that you know where I live and you would be over in a flash. So I'll say this instead. If they win the next series I will buy you a pack of Smokes. He! he! |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 24 Apr 08 - 09:41 PM Well I am surprised that Osgood started. Despite how well he has been playing I really thought they would go with Hasek at the start to see if he was hot. He is also their number one even though I never cared for his play. But then what do I know. I think this is not going to go over well with Mr. Hasek. But then again, is it possible he is a bit injured? Topical Tom. I'm lost for words in your come back. Lets call a truce (before you loose) and will share a few beers or wines instead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 24 Apr 08 - 10:40 PM Is it just me - I'm a real homer, now - or are the wings really the best pass and puck control team in the NHL? If the defensemen on the other team play well positionally and their forwards back check, passing and puck control can be interrupted. I do think the Wings are the strongest team still in it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 26 Apr 08 - 08:44 AM Rust gone after short ramp up, and all lines ROLLING. Poor Lundqvist, can't know what hit him. He is the most feared goalie they'll face. The umbrella strategy is a new wrinkle in the curriculum. Therrien is ON it. I bet Conklin and Meloche and Fleury sat the team down to request it. "Hello, this is Henrik Lundqvist, send the cops right away, I'm surrounded by snipers and I can't watch them all at once!" ~S~ |
