Subject: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup 2008 From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Mar 08 - 02:30 PM Sid the Kid is back. Considering the way the Penguins have played without him, they have got to be favorites to go through the East. I am still a Senators fan and I now root for home state Hurricanes. But I am seeing an all water fowl final between the Ducks and Pens as very likely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Big Mick Date: 27 Mar 08 - 02:43 PM Ah go on witcha.......just enjoy all the foreplay........cuz in the end it will be the Red Wings hoisting the Cup Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 27 Mar 08 - 02:47 PM Righ on Mick. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Mar 08 - 03:10 PM They have a better chance than the Senators. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Rapparee Date: 27 Mar 08 - 03:15 PM I didn't take the damned thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Mooh Date: 27 Mar 08 - 05:55 PM Rapaire, neither did the Leafs...lately. Go Leafs Go! Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Rapparee Date: 27 Mar 08 - 06:07 PM Well, I hope that he doesn't get hit in the tender place a cup usually covers. Might not have any progeny after that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 27 Mar 08 - 07:06 PM I'm hoping that Toronto or Washington make it and they play off against Montreal. Montreal would not want to meet Washington and Toronto always gives them a real tough time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Mar 08 - 08:38 PM Haven't the Senators had Montreal's number as well? It could be Montreal's year though, It wouldn't be the first time they rode a hot rookie goalie to the cup. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Mooh Date: 27 Mar 08 - 09:02 PM Yeah, remember Dryden? He was amazing. Met him once, bought his book and he signed it, he was real personable. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Mar 08 - 09:07 PM Wasn't Roy a rookie too? And now Cary Price? |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Mar 08 - 09:09 PM By the was Dryden was AWESOME!!! That was a wonderful, exciting, and historic Stanley Cup run. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 27 Mar 08 - 09:29 PM Have to agree with you folks. Dryden was a giant in the net. Great if you were a Canadian fan. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: gnu Date: 28 Mar 08 - 05:13 AM A buddy of mine actually admitted Dryden was the best he had ever seen. That was on the way to school one morning. When we got there and started talking to the other kids, he said Cheevers was far better. I stuffed him upside down in a snowbank. Hey, what are friends for eh? |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,number 6 Date: 28 Mar 08 - 09:17 AM The best goalie of all time .... Johnny Bower cannot be denied that title. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 28 Mar 08 - 09:40 AM Wow biLL!! Terry Sawchuk in my bookk and because he played for the Red wings because he also played for several others. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: bobad Date: 28 Mar 08 - 09:53 AM I agree Sawchuk was one of the best in an era when playing in goal was like being the target of a spastic knife thrower and he had the face to prove it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 28 Mar 08 - 10:16 AM As a Caps fan for many years now I have to say...they won't make the big show. I love em, but they tear my heart out this time of year. (I hope they prove me wrong, though) That said, Go Habs Go!!! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: topical tom Date: 29 Mar 08 - 05:25 PM Although a Canadians fan I would have to agree that Terry Sawchuk was the best goalie. I liked Glenn Hall too.Depending on the goaling, I think that Montreal can go a long way.So |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: gnu Date: 29 Mar 08 - 05:43 PM I can't really go "Go Habs Go" too seriously here. My neihgbour, kitty corner across the street, has a lad in the NHL. So, we all kinda cheer his team on.... but, come down to the wire.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 29 Mar 08 - 05:55 PM What team is kitty's lad with? My Dad, Being a Protestant Newfie, cheers for Montreal only when Ryder is on the ice. (Protestant Newfies of his age in our neck of the woods generally grew up Leafs fan while the Catholics cheered for the Habs, I am not completely sure why.) He is also a Wings fan when Daniel Cleary is playing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: bobad Date: 29 Mar 08 - 07:12 PM I would imagine that would be because Toronto was seen as primarily an English Protestant city and Montreal a French Catholic city back when, but things sure have changed since, fully 50% of Torontonians are foreign born today. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 29 Mar 08 - 08:01 PM Raj Must be Protestent |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 29 Mar 08 - 11:12 PM Alex Faulkner was the first Newfoundlander to play in the N.H.L. Drafted by Toronto but the Wings picked him up and he played there for two years. Early sixties. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 29 Mar 08 - 11:51 PM He played for the Conception Bay CB's after he came home. My father used to go down the shore to Harbour Grace to watch the games. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 30 Mar 08 - 01:27 AM Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen,...and ladies, too, when it comes to the sport of hockey, and I believe Mick and Beer will stand with me on this: you only have to remember two words - Red Wings! Cheers! |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 30 Mar 08 - 02:18 AM Well if it was just them. They wouldn't have anyone to beat would they? And this would be a very short thread. As far as predicting their performance, the question is do they have enough Geritol to go four rounds in the playoffs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 30 Mar 08 - 06:48 AM LOL Jack |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 30 Mar 08 - 07:43 AM It has been the tradition at Mudcat to encourage one another in one's encouragement of their teams, unlike the "trash talk" so common at umptyzillion other hockey discussion boards. Pseudolus began that tradition last year: Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? And it has continued this year, with discussions already underway. This is a fine thread for discussing the history of the Cup, as most of the posts seem to cover, but I'd like to refer continuing conversation on this year's playoffs back to the Ice Hockey 2007-08 thread. It and Pseudolus' first hockey thread (CLICK) have quite a few useful links in them. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 30 Mar 08 - 08:13 AM Looks like I'll be cheering for the Sabres tonight...I'd LOVE to see what Ovechkin can do in the playoffs, man. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 30 Mar 08 - 09:21 AM I agree with you Susan and was a little surprised when this thread was launched but participate and should have mentioned the other thread where all this should have been listed. The main thing is to keep it friendly and pokes (in jest) about one team or another can be fun. Like Jack just did about the Wings and their Geritol. Jack, as far as this liquid boost, keep feeding it to them as it it has been working very well for them. Maybe not the Cup Stanley in the past few years but they have been giving their fans some very good hockey. Beer (adrien) Go Wings Go" |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: 3refs Date: 30 Mar 08 - 10:41 AM I've been so P@##ed with the Leafs for the last decade or so, I wear a Canadiens jacket just to get under the skin of people who don't know I'm really a die hard, closet-ted Leaf fan. I'll have a bonfire with it when, or if, the Leafs win Lord Stanley's mug. Last nights game, a 4-2 Toronto win against the Habs was worth the watch, as always! As for the goalie debate, Dryden won the Conn Smythe before he won Rookie of the year. Sawchuck had eyes that made the puck look like a beach ball. Johnny Bower never got a real chance until he was almost a senior citizen. Glen Hall played in 502 consecutive games. I'd take any one of them today. I think someone worth mentioning, and could play in any era is Martin Brodeur. But, if I had to pick one, I couldn't! I'd flip a coin and take either Bower or Jacques Plante. With today's equipment, I doubt you could put a pea past either one of them! |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 30 Mar 08 - 12:30 PM I don't have any bets with anyone this year. I just wanted to talk hockey for a bit with the playoffs looming. I have to say. I'm not happy with the Senators. First place at the half way point, they could miss the playoffs. I still think a Ducks/Pens final is likely they both have the goaltending and they both are peaking at just the right time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 30 Mar 08 - 01:00 PM As a person living near the city where the Ducks' AHL team is located, I'm sorry they're doing so well...that means my Portland Pirates are going to struggle in the Calder Cup playoffs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 30 Mar 08 - 02:51 PM Are they calling up your best guys? Don't tell me they have more of that great young talent waiting in the wings (get it? Ducks.. wings?) Anyway if they have more where Getzlaf and those guys came from, its depressing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 31 Mar 08 - 07:43 AM 3refs said: "But, if I had to pick one, I couldn't! I'd flip a coin and take either Bower or Jacques Plante." These guys were truly great! As long as Plante stayed in his crease he could stop anything. Problem was that he liked to wander around, but Les Habs had a second netminder on the ice called Doug Harvey. Bowers had lightning fast reflexes and would get his glove, stick, pad, or head if necessary (no mask) in front of a Bobby Hull or Boom Boom slapshot. He was an old man by hockey standards and was still quicker than a teenager. A great shame that his younger playing days were lost in the minors. Sawchuck I would rate as the greatest that I have seen only because he played much longer than Bower. He could do it all! Glen Hall came alive in the playoffs and deserves to be rated highly as well. All that being said all of these men had great teams with a strong defense in front of them and would face about 30 shots or less in a game. Now Gumper Worsley had a much weaker team through those years and would face twice as many shots. He let more in but his save percentage was, I believe, often the highest in the league so he deserves mention. There have been great goaltenders before and since but the last decade of the 6 team loop concentrated not only great goalies but great scorers as well. I consider that to have been hockey's greatest era! |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 31 Mar 08 - 07:45 AM Bowers??? "Bower" :-} |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 31 Mar 08 - 07:55 AM Jack, Getzlaff, Perry, Sutherby and Huskins (the ones I remember) started out here in Portland and the Ducks pulled them. We've got some talent here and they're young and fast. I love having hockey so close to home and the AHL is a great league but it's hard when you're a fan of the local team (and NOT the NHL version) and lose all your best guys this time of year. Though that IS what the AHL is for so I guess I should just suck it up and get used to it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 08 - 11:03 AM It must be great seeing guys like that when they are young and having it cost a small fraction of the NHL game. The six team league was good. They had a lot of Canadian talent to pick from. Now, in many ways the best hockey is in the Olympics. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Becca72 Date: 31 Mar 08 - 11:22 AM I can get great seats in Portland for $12 (parking in the garage next door just went up...to $5). Up until last season Portland was the farm team for the Capitals and we've seen a lot of really talented guys come through here in the past 15 years. It's fun to watch a game now and say "yup..Olie Kolzig (for example)..saw him play in Portland back in the day" I have to admit I don't watch Olympic hockey..but the minor leagues are worth watching, for sure. We've got the AHL Portland Pirates and also the QMJL Lewiston Mainiacs here. Not to mention the UMaine Black Bears. All well worth the price of a ticket. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 08 - 11:39 AM Vancouver will probably be the last year for the NHL in the Olympics, It will be in your time zone, you should watch some games. A Canadian teal with Crosby, Getzlaf, Perry, Spezza, Heatley and all the Staal brothers. The Russians with Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk and Nabokov The Swedes with Alfredson, Lidstrom, Sundin Zetterberg the Sedins and Lundqvist Very very strong teams playing for pride instead of money! its been a great tournament for the past fer tears. Check it out in two years. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 08 - 11:40 AM I just realized you are in Portland ME. Please disregard the time zone thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 31 Mar 08 - 03:38 PM 3refs - man, that is something I could NEVER do - wear the jacket of the opposition in deference to my teams bad play. If it's hockey I'm wearing a Red Wings item or with any sport it's Notre Dame. Both of which I love to wear down here in Texas because so many sports folks down here dispise the Red Wings and the Fighting Irish. It's great fun. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: wysiwyg Date: 31 Mar 08 - 04:40 PM Our "local" ECHL team (an hour away) has sent a couple of guys to the AHL this year, and one has already gotten some NHL ice time. It IS great seeing them start out. On the other hand, "our" ECHL team feeds not into "our" Pens (who are only "ours" because our cable happens to carry them), but regularly trounces the team that does feed into the Pens' system. I have come to the conclusion that the sole reason for that lowly ECHL team's existence in the Pens' organization is to make a place to threaten to send non-producing AHL players down to. :~) Because they lose to everyone! :~) ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Big Mick Date: 31 Mar 08 - 08:03 PM GUEST,Texas Guest, I can't wait to meet you. When that finally works out, we must coordinate. You have exactly the same tastes in sports that I do. Notre Dame is my passion, and my Red Wings .... what can one say. True hockey fans haven't lived until they have been to Hockeytown. When we meet, the first pint is on me. A month ago I went down to a Bass Pro Shops store in Portage, Indiana. I got disoriented by all the Notre Dame paraphanelia being worn. One lady, when I explained that I was used to being one of a very small minority amongst all the University of Michigan fans, told me, "Don't worry, honey, you are safe here. You are among family". *****chuckle***** Go Wings!!!!!! All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 08 - 08:10 PM Mick, I've been to Hockey town. Great tradition, great hockey fans. You make a good point. But I've been to Montreal (23 Cups) and Toronto (where the Cup lives) |
Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Beer Date: 31 Mar 08 - 08:18 PM Hay!!! I feel left out on that pint. I've been to Hockeytown 5 times, all at the Olympia. I have followed the Wings since the age of 8 Stayed with then during the hard times as well. Spoke to old scare face in 1963. Shook hands with Norman Ullman. Seen Alex close up as well as Mr Hockey. Never been to the Joe. Maybe one day if I'm invited for a pint. Beer (adrien) |

Subject: RE: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup From: Big Mick Date: 31 Mar 08 - 08:32 PM I sure can't argue with the tradition in those towns, JTS. But I am coming from the completely partisan and biased standpoint of a diehard, dyed in the wool, Red Wings fan. Adrien, it goes without saying that you are in on that pint. I will be in Canada visiting my good friends in Toronto, and mebbe taking a ramble a bit further. First pint on me, mon ami. Mick, member of the Mudcat Red Wing fanatics club. |
