Subject: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Pluto Press Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:24 AM Hello everyone, I could perhaps just say Click here to pre-order the Bert Lloyd biography, but I'd like to elaborate a bit more. As some of you may know, Dave Arthur has written a fantastic, extremely comprehensive biography of Bert Lloyd, called Bert: The Life and Times of A.L. Lloyd. It's truly epic, coming in at almost 500 pages and bound as a beautiful jacketed hardback. Mudcat users were instrumental in getting the book published, sending dozens of messages to Pluto that convinced us of the book's importance. So it's exciting to be able to tell you all that a limited number of copies of the book are now available to pre-order at a discounted price from www.bertlloyd.org. The pre-orders will be sent out from our advance print run, meaning you'll get to read the book around the beginning of May, weeks before it gets in the shops or on Amazon. Once the pre-order closes and the book is released, we'll be handing bertlloyd.org over to Dave Arthur to use the site as an online resource for information on Bert, including many resources that didn't make it into the print edition of the book. If anyone is having any problems ordering the book or has any other questions, feel free to contact me at alecg@plutobooks.com Thanks for reading, Alec at Pluto Press |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:34 AM That's wonderful news. Bert's biography has been a long time in the making. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:43 AM Hope this doesn't sound facetious, but why does the title remind me of an early Willie Russell play - John, Paul, George, Ringo ..... and Bert? |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:48 AM Two comments Alec: 1) When I view bertlloyd.org in Firefox (v11 under Ubuntu 11.10), the country dropdown is only partially visible (top half of the control) at the bottom of the box. It is just enough to be usable, but you might want to add some space below it. 2) For UK users amazon.uk is showing it for £19.49 with free delivery (Bert) - less than your £20 preorder offer! Otherwise, great news about the book. Mick |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:56 AM Mick, Pluto Press is a small organisation which is well worth supporting. It's worth buying through them to encourage them to put out more folk music based books in the future. Also, the Amazon is only 51p cheaper, and if you buy it from them, you will have to wait for the official release. I'd strongly recommend that folks order it now direct from PP. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 Mar 12 - 07:32 AM I think I will do that. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 21 Mar 12 - 07:54 AM Thank you, Pluto Press! |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: John Routledge Date: 21 Mar 12 - 08:47 AM Done - If it is as half as fascinating as "A Class Act" by Ben Harker I will be happy.!! |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Reinhard Date: 21 Mar 12 - 08:51 AM Good to hear this; I have just ordered the book. By the way, I noted that the first cover picture (which is still on my website) said "Foreword by Lord Justice Stephen Sedley" while the current cover says "Foreword by Richard Thompson". |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: matt milton Date: 21 Mar 12 - 08:56 AM I think I know whose foreword I'd prefer to read... |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Dave Hanson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 09:50 AM If you use Pluto Press to pre-order it's paypal or nothing. I don't use Paypal so I guess i'll get it cheaper from Amazon. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Pluto Press Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:03 AM It's heartening to see the interest (and the orders!). On the Amazon issue, they are a little cheaper, but as Owen said, we'll get the books to you sooner, and you may well get some exciting extras like catalogues, pencils, badges thrown in too! That said, Amazon orders are fine too, we still get paid for those, eventually. I have altered the site slightly which should correct the issue with Firefox and Ubuntu, though as we have no Linux machines here I can't say for sure. Alec |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:16 AM Cor. Pencils and badges. I'll definitely go for some of them. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Pluto Press Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:18 AM I did mean to add an alternative method of payment to the site but forgot. I've done it now. Feel free to give us a call on +44(0)208 348 2724 to make your order. Alec |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Reinhard Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:22 AM Firefox on MacOS and Solaris work fine, but Firefox on Ubuntu now hides the order telephone number under the white border unless I reduce the font size from the default 16pt to 14pt or less. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:43 AM From: Reinhard - PM Date: 21 Mar 12 - 08:51 AM By the way, I noted that the first cover picture (which is still on my website) said "Foreword by Lord Justice Stephen Sedley" while the current cover says "Foreword by Richard Thompson". Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: matt milton - PM Date: 21 Mar 12 - 08:56 AM I think I know whose foreword I'd prefer to read... Don't underrate ~~ Lord Justice Sedley is that same Stephen Sedley who edited & compiled The Seeds Of Love collection all those years ago ~~ one of best songbooks ever. He might be a Lord Justice, but he's one of us too, you know... ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Dave Hanson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:44 AM It's still utilising Paypal, why ? I'll stick with Amazon I think. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Dave Hanson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:45 AM And by the way, only 0.51 cheaper on Amazon eh ? give it a few days. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,henryp Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:57 AM Foreword by Lord Justice Stephen Sedley - might that be a long sentence? |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Brian Peters Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:10 PM Amazon tend to insist on huge wholesaler discounts in order to offer their customers those 'bargains', so if you want to support Pluto Press (who I guess have taken a bit of a risk on this book) then ordering direct would be the thing to do. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: matt milton Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:22 PM out of curiosity, what's your issue with Paypal, Dave H? While Paypal is a massive pain in the neck if you're a vendor (it takes a parasitically large cut), I don't see what disadvantages it has for a buyer. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:55 PM well, I know what I want for my birthday this year... lol sent an email to alec... darn internet is down at home grrrr |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 Mar 12 - 01:00 PM If you want to ensure that Paypal cannot steal your money, link it to a bank account (the result being called e-cheques) rather than a credit card. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: zozimus Date: 21 Mar 12 - 01:55 PM Presumably you have been given a list of those of us who pre-ordered from EFSDS as far back as 2008. The offer then was that those who pre-ordered would also get a double CD of Bert's songs. Can I presume this is the same double CD since released on Fellside?, and will the original package deal be honored, or will the book come from you or from EFSDS? |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Dave Hanson Date: 21 Mar 12 - 03:46 PM I'd send Pluto Press a cheque tomorrow, I can't see why they insist on one payment method only. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Deskjet Date: 21 Mar 12 - 04:42 PM Done! |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Bob the Postman Date: 21 Mar 12 - 05:01 PM £27 in the Rest Of The World—that's 43.66 Nuckbucks. Looking forward to a good read. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST Date: 23 Mar 12 - 11:31 AM Hi again everyone, I can't say for sure at the moment, but from the current information I have, EFSDS will be supplying their pre-orders directly, at roughly the same time as Pluto. I'm not sure about the CD, hopefully EFSDS will shortly be in touch with people who pre-ordered through them. Alec |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 23 Mar 12 - 07:16 PM I had thought that everyone who pre-ordered from EFDSS (not EFSDS) was sent a letter offering their money back as EFDSS was no longer publishing the book. I know I did (but declined to claim back the money...) Derek |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Surreysinger Date: 24 Mar 12 - 11:00 AM Derek - no they weren't. I am in contact with one person who has had no contact at all from anybody at EFDSS (apart from obliquely) directly since the first book launch at which she paid out the money. Last year after I made enquiries I was told that those who had not received their money back would receive the book when it was published. (I gather that she has still not received any official notification that the book is about to be relaunched at date of speaking to her last night). She still has her receipt! |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 24 Mar 12 - 06:28 PM I am now reliably informed that everyone who ordered in advance from EFDSS were sent a letter offering the money back. If anyone didn't get the letter, then perhaps they had moved or perhaps the letter was lost in the post. Anyone who didn't claim back the money will get a free copy of the book. (That's a bonus for me anyway - I was just about to order a copy!) If you reckon you didn't receive the letter, I suggest you write to EFDSS with full details. If you have the receipt, I suggest you send a copy! There will be no CD with the book - this was going to be an added extra with the original book publication - a real bonus - but the CD was later released by Fellside. It wasn't a double CD. Hope that clears up all existing queries! Derek |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Surreysinger Date: 24 Mar 12 - 08:28 PM Noted Derek .. which just confirms more or less what I was told a year ago. My friend hasn't moved in over 30 years. If any followup mailout to chase non-replies was made (which I would have expected, given that sums of money were in question) then she didn't get that either ... sounds worryingly as if she may have fallen off the list. Does anyone know who at EFDSS would be responsible for dealing with this one, so that I can pass the information on to her? |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 25 Mar 12 - 06:19 AM would suggest either Malcolm Taylor or Verity Flecknell. Derek |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Mar 12 - 09:41 AM I'll certainly add this book to my "wish list." I certainly hope all the other communication problems get sorted out. It's not easy to keep track of everyone who has pre-ordered something in this day and age. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Surreysinger Date: 25 Mar 12 - 11:35 AM Thanks Derek - I'll pass that on. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: mark gregory Date: 28 Mar 12 - 01:03 AM I'm certainly looking forward to reading it the cheapest price I've found (for Australian delivery) is from Book Depository where it was available post free for AUD$28.49 see http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Bert-Dave-Arthur/9780745332529 Pluto wanted £44 which is equivalent to AUD $67.33 and for some reason there was a £10 surcharge for "handling a credit card" giving a total of AUD $82.63 ... weird Mark |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: mark gregory Date: 21 Apr 12 - 02:43 AM Bert: The Life and Times of A.L.Lloyd by Dave Arthur is being launched on 31 May 2012 at Venue: Cecil Sharp House Start Time: 7:30:PM Music by Dave Arthur and his band, Martyn Wyndham Read and Iris Bishop. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 May 12 - 06:40 AM My copy arrived this morning; I'm looking forward to reading it over the Bank Holiday weekend. Congratulations to Dave Arthur, and to Pluto Press on getting this published at last. Well done! Matthew |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 05 May 12 - 06:56 AM So did mine. I haven't had chance to look inside it yet, but I sure did appreciate the badge and the free pencil. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 May 12 - 07:05 AM Thanks for the hint Owen! Found my badge and pencil (a weapon of mass instruction!) still inside the envelope. Only had time for a quick glance in the book so far, but it looks very good. M |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: GUEST Date: 05 May 12 - 07:56 AM What's the significance of the badge? It looks like AA - Alcoholics Anonymous would suit me! |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 05 May 12 - 08:08 AM Oh God, there's always someone. The letters are PP. They stand for Pluto Press. |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: sciencegeek Date: 05 May 12 - 09:02 AM well... if the first copies have arrived in the UK, can I hope to see mine soon here in "boonies" of western New York State? |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Les in Chorlton Date: 05 May 12 - 01:05 PM Chapter 1 read - difficulties over Bert's reconstructions already confronted. Great book, very well written L in C# |
Subject: RE: Bert Lloyd biography pre-order offer From: Owen Woodson Date: 06 May 12 - 01:52 PM There's another good reason for checking the Pluto Press jiffybag; namely that they've included a catalogue of books to be published in the second half of the year. They include:- Woody's Road: Woody Guthrie's Letters Home, Drawings, Photos and other Unburied Treasures. Edited by Marjorie Jo Guthrie Edgmon and Guy Logsdon. Pete Seeger: His Life in his own Words. Edited by Robert and Sam Rosenthal. As with the Guthrie, this collection seems to have been compiled from Seeger's own wiritings. It Ain't Me Babe: Bob Dylan and the Performance of Authenticity. Andrea Cossu. Playing For Change: Music and Musicians in the Service of Social Movements. Robert Rosenthal & Richard Flacks. For more details check . Pluto Press is a small radical publishing house, which is well supporting in its own right, but which does not appear to have done much in the way of music in the past. If Mudcatters and others can be persuaded to buy the Bert biography, as well as these pipeliners, PP might be persuaded that they can afford to publish more books on radical music in the future. |

Looks really good, of course last night was so busy I haven't had a chance to go through it, but I'm looking forward to going through it tonight. now if we could get more out there on Harry Robertson. I think there is some reprints on Bob Roberts' works. |
