It was the best I could come up with right now. Anyway, Jennbrooks, your husband's hints two years or so back haven't left me much wiggle room but the elves assure me we've coped with worse than this, so we're getting the whole process geared up now and I can assure you something will be on its way to you before too long. Just make sure you keep up those high standards of moral rectitude and all that stuff and then we'll have no trouble at all. Now to deck those halls once again, to get us all in a more festive mood .... |

Here let him then by all unpitied lie, And let's rejoice his time was come to die. My Secret Santa might not want people to "rejoice his time was come to die." |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: SINSULL Date: 19 Nov 12 - 01:29 PM In 1900, wealthy financier J.P. Morgan donated the Star of India to the American Museum of Natural History on Central Park West in Manhattan. On October 29, 1964, the famous golf-ball-sized stone was stolen, along with several other gems of note, including the Midnight Star, the DeLong Star Ruby, and the Eagle Diamond.[3] The thieves unlocked a bathroom window during museum open hours, climbed in that night, and found that the sapphire was the only gem in the collection protected by an alarm — and the battery for that was dead.[4] They raked up the stones and fled the same way they came in. The stones were valued at more than $400,000. Within two days, the notorious cat burglar, smuggler, and one-time surfing champion, Jack Murphy (also known as "Murph the Surf"), was arrested along with two accomplices, later receiving a three-year sentence. Some months later, the uninsured Star of India was recovered in a locker in a Miami bus station.[5] While most of the other gems were also found, the Eagle Diamond was never seen again. Wikipedia says Natural History Museum. So did he steal the Hope Diamond? |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Nov 12 - 02:38 AM Interesting about those gems, Rap. When I took my daughter to the American Museum of Natural History we looked at all of those fancy stones - but we were most impressed with the huge pieces of Topaz - you'd need a station wagon to move the largest one, let alone wear it. But if it is that plentiful and that large, that's a good source of jewelry stones for me. No one should have to die to mine a stone I would wear as jewelry. Just in case my Santa had ideas along those lines. . . :) SRS |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Sandra in Sydney's Secret Santa Date: 28 Nov 12 - 09:48 PM Well now. I haven't received ANY reports, naughty or nice, about S in S this year! Repeated requests made to Elves Down Under (a holey owned Sandra in Sydney's Secret Santa Syndicate subsidiary) have gone unanswered save for one. That came from Elf 429H32 and read AVHBM SERTW PKLJR RETYB BBHGT PORTW BZXXX YTWPY REBYT AAUXX This message contains a key word which tells me that all of the elves have been captured by Sandra in Sydney's Secret Service and are now acting as double agents. Since Elf 429H32 is no longer with us (he, she, or it voluntarily imploded) and no other elf Down Under knows the Super Secret Sandra in Sydney's Santa Kendall Morse Kode I must conclude that she has been naughty indeed this year. Too, too, bad. |

Sorry I'm late in getting in touch and I hope I haven't put you through the ringer while waiting. I have an elf assigned to you that you will hear from soon, as I sent him in advance to do research on your likes, dislikes and numerous acts of goodness. As it is his first assignment Down Under, he may be doing some serious adjusting to his new surroundings, but expect a report soon. His prescence will determine your presents, but all I've heard so far is that a Rapparee-style hat is out of the question. His prior knowledge of the holidays there was based on watching an old Chips Rafferty movie a few times, but I'm sure he's acclimated by now. Just in a St. Nick of time! The reindeer refuse to deliver anything until Christmas Eve and the backup team of cats... (Oops. Did I say "team" of cats?!?) Oh, well. (Oh, hell...) I'll deliver the package myself to the post office this very afternoon...on my way to pick up more eggnog...LOTS more eggnog. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Sarah the flute Date: 15 Dec 12 - 05:03 PM MY PRESENT HAS ARRIVED. i FOUND IT ROUND THE CORNER AS DESCRIBED. I am now really puzzled Ho Ho Ho Santa. It had no postmark and looked like it was delivered in person. Our decorator saw nothing so it must have been a very secret fairy Santa Ho Ho Ho. The puzzling bit was that we have been doing a secret friend at school too and all the wrapping paper on my gifts this week said Ho Ho Ho so I was thinking it was to do with that. I can't get to Mudcat from school (blocked for too many swear words). but thank you. I havn't opened it yet- thought I'd save it for the big day. Happy christmas Ho Ho Ho Santa STF |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Dec 12 - 05:55 PM I got a message on this thread and a postcard...hope Santa lets me know here when it might be in the post. I've sent a package (last week, I think) to my Santee. Hope she'll let me know when it arrives. I'll probably not open mine until Christmas morning (should it arrive beforehand). Things to open will be rather thin on the ground this year. (But, believe me, we're rich in the important stuff -- friends, each other, love and all that schmaltzy stuff.) Linn |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Dec 12 - 04:41 AM Never fear Stilly - I have every confidence in your Santa, who may be so busy choosing suitable gifts that there is no time to add to this thread. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Batty Santa Date: 17 Dec 12 - 09:33 AM Actually, it was consigned to the competent hands of the post toward the end of last week, and should be arriving any month now. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Gnancy's Gnome Date: 17 Dec 12 - 09:38 AM Well, Santa's spouse got your package sent off, and it should be arriving in time for whatever Solstice holiday you celebrate. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Hollowfox Date: 17 Dec 12 - 11:18 PM Thank you, Bat Goddess! We're getting the tree tomorrow, so the box will go under it then. When I went to pick it up at the post office, the (nice) guy behind the desk asked "What kind of crowd are you hanging out with?!?" I gave him the honest answer innstead of telling him we were a bunch of spelunkers. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Rapparee Date: 17 Dec 12 - 11:22 PM Hollowfox, I've spelunked. Yes, it was in my misspent youth, but I've done it and I'll shout it out for all to hear! There, I'm out of the closet. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Anne Lister's Secret Santa Date: 17 Dec 12 - 11:23 PM It's Away!! (Sorry, small Star Wars moment). I got your package to the post office today, and told them not to spare the reindeer. It should get to you by the solstice, much less Christmas. My main goal wes to get it to you before you left for your trip to the USA, but if Murphy's Law rears its ugly head, don't worry. Nothing in the package has a short shelf life. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Nancy King Date: 18 Dec 12 - 09:21 AM A package -- with no return address -- has arrived, and been placed under the tree to be opened on The Day. Woo hoo! Thank you, Santa! |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Gnancy's Gnome Date: 18 Dec 12 - 09:28 AM Ah, good. The latter was carefully chosen to express your colour preferences. |

Well, round here Christmas doesn't happen till Dec 25, so you just possess your soul in patience. I have whipped the elves down the jewellery mine, so they might come up with something. You just watch the skies, and make sure there is a glass of sherry and a mince pie put out for me under the tree on the Big Night. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Dec 12 - 12:47 PM Received my package with no return address (sneaky Santa...) but with inside hints (at least once I opened the prezzies) to know it came from the vicinity of Albuquerque, so that narrows it down and I'm guessing it may be from my 2010 Santee...(though it could be from someone else in the family). I had good intentions to wait until Christmas morning...but I just couldn't. Thank you! (I'm especially looking forward to, uh, "sipping" one of the wine-filled chocolates! And listening to the CDs. And using the noseflute, perhaps, while caroling...) Linn |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: SINSULL Date: 19 Dec 12 - 06:29 PM And yet another bag at my doorstep. I was foolish to think that Santa was going to follow through on his/her threat and continue the ugly creche theme. This time it is a soft and beautiful scarf that matches mittens I bought while playing with Jacqui. HMMMMM. Santa remembered the beloved beasts too with cheesy treats and Original Crunch. Had to fight them for the gift bag. Thank you Santa Hope it's OK I "peeked". SINS |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Anne Lister Date: 20 Dec 12 - 04:38 PM Many thanks, Santa! The postman managed to deliver your wonderful package to the wrong address (not difficult in our area) and this meant we had to go and collect it, thereby making the better acquaintance of some neighbours who are extremely nice people (and he is the local vet). So in addition to a fab pile of goodies (well, I'm guessing, as of course I've been good and left them unopened for now at least) we've got to know some more local people. Double win! |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Rapparee Date: 20 Dec 12 - 07:01 PM I don't git no presents...possibly cuz Santy can't find me here in Merryland where I am instead of in Idaho. As fer the grog, I don't touch the stuff while on the job, but Prancer, well, has refined tastes. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Dec 12 - 12:43 PM Well, Santa...I've been enjoying listening to the CDs whose musicians you described as being "neighbors", so I THINK I've narrowed you down to Albuquerque, although in my neck of the woods (New Hampshuh, by godfrey) "neighbor" could mean the surrounding three states and the Maritimes... I've PMed my suspicians...I do hope you'll gratify me with an answer on "the day" as promised! Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Nancy King Date: 26 Dec 12 - 12:19 PM Ho Ho Ho! Linn (Her Battiness) and I have something in common -- We both got gifties from Albuquerque! I got CDs (which I haven't had a chance to listen to yet), "Texas red wine liquid center chocolates" (sounds fantastic!), a southwestern cookbook filled with interesting-sounding ideas, and a cut-out card that looks like fun! Oh -- and let's not forget the nose flute! Thank you Santa! I'm not sure which of us was blessed by Art and which by Jenn, but it doesn't really matter -- both are fine folks and excellent Santas! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Hollowfox Date: 26 Dec 12 - 11:53 PM Thank you Bat Goddess! The t-shirt is lovely, and the color suits me well. I hope I remember to pack it for Old Songs next year. I Love maps, etc. with notes attached; I just wish there was such interesting stuff to pick i]up in my local fast food joints. Most of my time in New Hampshire has been in the Mount Monadnock area, but I see that you're kind of close to Dover NH. Do you know Poor Howard and Barb Trow from up that way? The cd's look to be a real treat, especially Curmudgeon's. I was going to play it in the van won my way to work today, but the library got closed due to a bad winter storm, so that's a treat for tomorrow. In the meantime today, I got started on that lovely bit of cross stitch. Thanks again! |

Many thanks for your very interesting and informative gifts which are helping to tempt us across the world. A Santa who lives in England, but comes from Australia. Goodness, who can that be? One who has been on the Cat since 2003? Could it be a lass named Jenny? O, I think it might! Huge thanks & wishing you a very Happy New Year!! |

Although it was packed for posting, I decided to pop it over to you during a lunch hour as we live so close to you. Apart from the Ocarina they were mostly home-made pressies (times are hard), including the delivery. Haven't ever attempted sining (lost consonant notwithstanding), but might incorporate it into a song one day *grin* Happy New Year!!! |

It's really even nicer to have a present after all the Christmas excitement has died down. Anne Lister, are you my Santa? I have a lovely Welsh cookbook with some "speckled cakes" in it that I want to try really soon, a CD by that same Anne Lister, which I will hear in the car tomorrow on the way to work, and a lovely little illustrated copy of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" which I will enjoy for a year, and then share with my grandchildren, next Christmas. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: greg stephens Date: 07 Jan 13 - 07:47 AM That waa funny: having sent Stilly River Sage a parcel 2ith the usual mix of treats, local paper and CD, I get back a parcel with the usual mix of local paper, treats and CD from: Stilly River Sage! That's odd, it's never happened before. Anyway, no reason why it shouldn't happen like that, thanks a million. The coated pecans are very addictive!!! |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 Jan 13 - 12:59 PM Those "coated nuts" are called "pralines." Not the hardened melted butter and brown sugar puddle with nuts in it that one finds in point-of-purchase racks in southern stores and restaurants, but individually butter and sugar crusted pecans. They looked wonderful and durable enough to ship. :) And I have a Kendal mint cake to try. After all of the discussions here at Mudcat over the years, I hesitate to open it - what is the general consensus? Are they edible, or simply collectible? SRS |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: greg stephens Date: 07 Jan 13 - 01:53 PM Kendal mint cake was taken to the top of Everest by Edmund Hilary. Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Animaterra's surreptitious santa Date: 07 Jan 13 - 05:37 PM Hello Animaterra, This surreptitious Santa is also a shame-faced Santa. Things have quite gotten away from me of late -- including your gift, which has gotten lost somewhere in the depths of my demesne. However, I have just arranged to have a replacement shipped to you, and I will just keep the one I have -- once I find it! Look for a small package within a few days. Apologetically, Santa |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 07 Jan 13 - 08:28 PM Bless you, Santa! I will be patient... |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: jacqui.c Date: 08 Jan 13 - 09:59 AM Well, I just checked the list and it seems that both our Australian Catters have not yet received their packages. I think this may be a problem with the post office in one or the other country or possibly a hold up in customs? Animaterra's Santa has responded to let her know that a late gift is on the way and I'm waiting for Claire Bear to chime in to confirm that she has been visited by Santa. Other than that, all gifts have been delivered. I'll give it a couple of weeks before putting up the list of Santas. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Sandra in Sydney's Secret Santa Date: 08 Jan 13 - 10:49 AM I put it in the post. I saw it loaded about the ship. The ship was of Dutch registry and I even met the captain, a really bony fella named Hendrick Vanderdecken. When I told him what was in the cargo he swore it would arrive "in spite of the Devil and Hell itself." |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: ClaireBear Date: 08 Jan 13 - 12:21 PM Hurray! My gifties arrived this selfsame morning in a package well-nigh bursting with treats. Thank you, Sarah the Flute -- everything you mentioned in your card sounds wondrous, and I am sure to enjoy each and every one of your gifts very much! But if you don't mind, I am going to wait and open the wrapped gifts when my son and I have our Christmas, which will likely be in March when we are back in our house. I hope you are willing to wait for more specific thanks. Cheers and Happy Christmas! Claire |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Jan 13 - 09:46 PM Greg Stephens, I put that CD in my bedside player last night and heard several songs before I drifted off to sleep. Wonderful! I'll listen to it in another room soon so I can hear the entire album. And I tried that Ardbeg this evening - knock my socks off but that is amazing! It is very smoky, but it takes itself seriously and I could stand this on special occasions. I went back to the Question about Scotch thread to see if you'd participated. I got quite a good education as I read through and participated in that thread - you might enjoy it! Thanks again! (I gave the small chocolates to my son, who loved them. I don't eat chocolate these days, but these Secret Santa parcels are always a family affair. I have the newspaper here for folks to enjoy - I'm sure Moonglow will hunch over it next time she's down for a visit!) SRS |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 10 Jan 13 - 04:58 AM my parcel finally arrived - strangely enough it came from the person I suspected - the person who kept earbashing me! Or maybe he just forgot to log out... thankyou Raparee for an interesting selection of stuff from your area. A potato cookbook (memo - buy some potatoes), postcards that I'll be able to squash into the area behind my computer along with those sent by Catters & other friends. Beef Jerky is yummy & the Huckleberry lip moisture smells lovely. & I really love the postcard! I won't try to use the beaded pen as my arthritic finger can't hold thin pens, so I'll display it with my American flag pen & pencil sent by an earlier Santa. I have a collection of beaded embroidery & beaded items & it is my only Native American piece, many thankyous. And a personal letter from Santa! Wow!!! I'm sure my heirs will be able to sell it for a fortune when they inherit it! sandra |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Rapparee Date: 10 Jan 13 - 10:43 PM Well, damned few other 'Catters live in Idaho, so I guessed that you'd probable guess straight off. That pen might be easier to use than you think. I would have sent a Shoshone rose but you can only get them by inheritance or if you're a rich tourist. As for a pair of beaded gloves -- they used to cost as much as $1.50 per pair (brain-tanned elkhide, softer than butter, but I offered to buy my wife a pair recently and she was adverse to my spending better than $500.00 (USD, of course) for gloves she'd never wear. Enjoy the stuff. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jan 13 - 12:17 AM the roses are beautiful, & the gloves are fantastic, thanks for the link. sandra |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Guest, an upset Santee Date: 11 Jan 13 - 08:45 AM I'm upset because having received a wonderful selection of goodies from Santa, and having been shocked at how much Santa had paid in shipping charges it appears that I am now being charged a reasonable whack of money because I received the gift! FedEx are asking me to pay, claiming this is import taxes based on the declared value of the goods and shipping. I'm keeping this anonymous as I don't want my kind Santa to feel guilty or impelled to pay any more monies out on my account, but I thought you should all be aware that if you send stuff to the UK the cash value of what you send is now lower than before and unless you check what to write to describe the items your recipient may face the same trouble. To give an idea, in this case the amount they want from me is 33% of the value of the goods. I'm appalled. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jan 13 - 07:46 PM is it legal for a private American company to ask you for money? Who are they paying the money to? check with someone, maybe HM Customs? sandra |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Jan 13 - 11:23 AM It does seem bizarre that gifts would be taxed. I'd be willing to bet that some underling has misunderstood the rules of engagement. Refute the charges and see what happens. (My advise only, not a legal recommendation!) SRS |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: jacqui.c Date: 12 Jan 13 - 01:44 PM Guest - that sounds rather bogus to me. I quite often send stuff to the UK and have never had this problem. With the value of the gift sent by your Santa, which, I guess would be well under the limit, no excise duty should be added. I would check the Customs and Excise website to see if there is any info on the top value of packages coming into the UK before tax has to be paid. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Upset Santee Date: 12 Jan 13 - 06:33 PM I've now checked the HMRC website. These are the rules: when sending a gift from non EU countries to the UK, the value must be less than £36.00, based on rates on their website. That's now. Until the end of 2012 the limit was £40.00. If you declare a limit that's higher than that they can charge you duty - in this case, the value was a matter of pence more than that, so that's why they picked on this package. In addition, because this was sent express delivery, they added the cost of postage to the value being taxed. Nice of them, huh? And then FedEx add their own charges. I'm considering what to do. At the moment, writing to my MP comes high on the list, as it seems totally wrong that I can be asked to pay a significant sum for something when I have had no choice whatsoever in what it is or how it's been delivered. It also seems wrong that my generous Santa has already paid a huge sum to ship the package to me in the first place and yet this doesn't encompass any of the essential charges. The legal situation, however, is as I've described above. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 12 Jan 13 - 09:00 PM adding the cost of postage, whatever next!!! definitely Rip-Off Enterprises. it's a worry, if we send parcels up to the value of 20 pounds or dollars or whatever the local currency, then air mail it it could easily be over 40 pounds. Maybe everyone needs to make a pressie rather than buy one so it has a nominal value. good luck, get your MP onto it fast. Contact the media (Scrooge-like govt dept takes money from Santa) sandra |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: artbrooks Date: 13 Jan 13 - 09:00 AM Another thought might be - did they notice that the sender's value was in $US? If, for example, the sender marked a value of $40, that's less than £25. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Jan 13 - 11:09 AM Good point, Art. Just the fact that it was a gift should exempt it from this kind of scrutiny. SRS |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa - Santee teasers - 2012 From: GUEST,Upset Santee Date: 13 Jan 13 - 03:37 PM Sorry, I wasn't clear - in this case the value of the goods, converted from dollars to pounds, came to just over the 40 sterling. As I said, I had an extremely generous Santa. And then, because the package was sent express delivery, another rule kicked in which meant they could take into account the cost of shipping. In any case, it's a major kick in the teeth for all sides, and I can't understand how the cost of express delivery (already incredibly expensive) wouldn't automatically include other charges if they know this is the regulation. Which of course they must do - unlike those of us who send very few international packages. |

It had been all over New South Wales and had Christmas Island stamps on it too. Sandra has just been visiting friends around the state and one of the names on the parcel is a familiar one. Inside are lovely hand-made gifts (a la Sandra. :-) ) A chain of felt hearts with gold angels, a beautiful notebook fabric-covered, a spangled parrot, and a little owl, a callendar, a tea-towel covered in Sandra's trademark -- Teddy bears. The hand-writing on the card! I recognised that too. My friend Sandra thank you so very much. A very clever try at hiding. It did take me a while to work it all out. Love and hugs, Joy |
