Sweet Magical Songs Needed

Subject: Sweet Magical Songs ARISE! From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:46 PM I would like very much to find songs that sparkle. You know, the type of song that insires with hope without being a hymn, adds meaning to our lives without being cynical, and is so melodic that it swoons the people three doors down even though they can't quite hear it... I have long felt that some songs have this quality, but some tell me that it is more the singer than the song,... I'm ready. I want the songs. Know any? Highland Rover, St. Helena, Witch of the Westmerlands, Bailiff's daughter of Islington, and Bonny Betsy Logan are a few. |

A slow, song of hope, with great happy melody, and awesome laid-back harmonica stylings...a great song of hope indeed to young traditional players of this day "I'm free to be whatever, whatever I want, and I'll sing the blues if I want." Also, though I was "rocker" for many years,... I have sort of picked up the pieces of my roots, and moved backwards into the traditions that I grew up with. Its like I'm not satisfied with contemporary music unless it is firmly based in folk foundations. It is true, I think, and it can be argued with great force, that grunge pop is expressing todays feelings effectively, as is rap, industrial, way out jazz, and even country... But as for me, I want magic that is soooo strong, that it needs only a clear voice, an acoustic instrument, and people open and close... harmonising without even trying to. I just don't sing many of 'em. Not sure why, It's not a principle thing really. I guess that since I play for folkies, There are often a few outspoken ones that make you feel like you are a religious fanatic when you sing more that one a year... hard to take from a young audience. |

(I have this sneaking suspicion I may have posted it there, cause it has my initials at the bottom. But I don't remember doing it at all. Please, somebody tell me you did it and my memory is not totally failing...) It was written by Luther Schutz, who is an emergency physician in Washington state. (I used to know the name of the town he's in, too....) Anyway, I'm always partial to songs written by doctors. But it is a truly wonderful song, that I first heard sung by Richard Scholtz and members of Motherlode at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in 1986. It's worth learning if you can find the music. I'll get to my songbooks soon and give you some other ideas. And thanks for the kind words. Even an old folkie/fogey can get the Starship reference! Or was that still Airplane...? Aloha, Mark |

Others that come immediately to mind are "How Can I Keep From Singing", which may be a little to 'hymn-like' for you, but is beautiful, nonetheless.
