Subject: Sweet Magical Songs ARISE! From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:46 PM I would like very much to find songs that sparkle. You know, the type of song that insires with hope without being a hymn, adds meaning to our lives without being cynical, and is so melodic that it swoons the people three doors down even though they can't quite hear it... I have long felt that some songs have this quality, but some tell me that it is more the singer than the song,... I'm ready. I want the songs. Know any? Highland Rover, St. Helena, Witch of the Westmerlands, Bailiff's daughter of Islington, and Bonny Betsy Logan are a few. |

Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:51 PM Dang, don't know ANY of those! I'd recommend, with my bulletproof vest firmly in place, "Whatever" by Oasis. A slow, song of hope, with great happy melody, and awesome laid-back harmonica stylings...a great song of hope indeed to young traditional players of this day "I'm free to be whatever, whatever I want, and I'll sing the blues if I want." Sorry...I'm working on the acoustic version now... |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Catrin Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:57 PM 'Everything POssible' by Fred West 'Come by The Hills' - not sure who by Both in DT I think this thread will produce some interesting comments. I do believe that 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but it will be good to see the different songs that each of us might choose as being special in the way you describe. Cheers, Catrin |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Gary T Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:59 PM "Frog Kissing", written by Buddy Kalb (of "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" fame) and recorded by Chet Atkins. In my opinion, it meets your criteria. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Sorcha Date: 26 Jul 00 - 07:00 PM Well, it's "new" and copyrighted, but AshOaken Farewell does it for me. So does Andy M. Stewart's Take Her in Your Arms. Sittin' On the Dock Of the Bay, Wabash Blues (or almost any bues, for that matter). Sweet Georgia Brown. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Amergin Date: 26 Jul 00 - 07:03 PM I like Andy M. Stewart's My Heart It Belongs To She... I always thought Take Her In Your Arms was about a drag queen.... |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: GUEST,Banjo Johnny Date: 26 Jul 00 - 07:14 PM "We Shall Overcome" - gets them every time == Johnny |

Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jul 00 - 07:42 PM Remember that if you're listing songs that aren't in the Digital Tradition or Forum, it's a really nice thing to post the lyrics (and Dick will yell at you if you don't). -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 26 Jul 00 - 09:32 PM Right Joe, I haven't even checked on a couple of the ones I play... So far so good... I'm especially interested in what is known these days as ancient, but keep em comming! Mbo, I think Oasis ROCKS!, "she's electric" is one of my faves, as well as "Wonder Wall" which gets everyone a bit up. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 26 Jul 00 - 09:39 PM O my God! Thomas, another Oasis fan? A rare occurance indeed! I LOVE "She's Electric"! It's one of only 3 songs I have memorized, the others being "Digsy's Diner" and "Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is" by Oasis as well. You and I, we're gonna live forever, my friend! --Matt |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: GUEST,Shanti Date: 26 Jul 00 - 09:42 PM How about Lady Keith's Lament or Who Will Comfort Me? They always get to me. The latter actually makes me cry every time I hear it.

Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:32 AM MMario, I have looked a bit, and haven't found a trace of Jock O'hazeldean. You've got me going... any clues? |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Barbara Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:49 AM "Everything Possible" is by Fred Small not West, and is in RUS. Let me think a bit and I'll post some for you tomorrow. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:51 AM OOPS< well I should say... YES!... found it on Gaughan's website, (-;(-;(-;(-;(-;(-;(-;(-; |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Alice Date: 27 Jul 00 - 02:03 AM Lovely Joan (it turns out well for the girl, anyway). I like the way Anam recorded it. Type @myth into the DT search box and you will get lots of songs that are the type you describe. Alice |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mark Cohen Date: 27 Jul 00 - 02:35 AM Hi, Thomas! Priscilla Herdman recorded a beautiful version of Jock O'Hazeldean on her first album, The Water Lily. Also on that album, I've always liked Do You Think That I Do Not Know, though it's a bit sadder than I think you're looking for. Wow, so many others...Fred Small's Jimmy Come Lately and, oh, don't think I know the title: May the rain run off your shoulder when you're caught in a storm When the frost comes a-callin' may it find you safe and warm May your place be set, may your promises be kept May you never forget you are loved Several by Gordon Bok, Hearth and Fire and Turning Toward the Morning come to mind, Bob Franke's Thanksgiving Eve (in fact, just about anything by Bob Franke), a song called On Your Way Home by Luther Schutz. And then the ancient ones: Lady Franklin's Lament, Thousands Or More, oh, where is my songbook when I need it? I'll stop now and get back to work, and try to add more later. Thanks for starting this thread. And Joe, I promise to check the DT and add those from the above list that aren't in there--at least the ones I remember the words to! Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Dulci46 Date: 27 Jul 00 - 07:57 AM Mbo, The clicky thing don't work |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 27 Jul 00 - 08:17 AM The link is wonky...keep trying, it'll come up. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 12:44 PM Thanks, Mbo, but I "let go" of all my Oasis ('whatever' included) when I found out that they were a 'project'. Also, though I was "rocker" for many years,... I have sort of picked up the pieces of my roots, and moved backwards into the traditions that I grew up with. Its like I'm not satisfied with contemporary music unless it is firmly based in folk foundations. It is true, I think, and it can be argued with great force, that grunge pop is expressing todays feelings effectively, as is rap, industrial, way out jazz, and even country... But as for me, I want magic that is soooo strong, that it needs only a clear voice, an acoustic instrument, and people open and close... harmonising without even trying to. Enjoy it Mbo, your heart is big, so,..., whatever you do will carry ya through! ttr |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Kim C Date: 27 Jul 00 - 12:54 PM This isn't really a sweet song, but I have always enjoyed John Prine's "Dear Abby". Bewildered, Bewildered, you have no complaint You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't So listen up buster and listen up good Stop wishin for bad luck and knockin on wood Kinda sums it up for me, anyway. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: MMario Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:07 PM ttr- am I reading correctly that you found Jock O' Hazeldean? |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:16 PM How about Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? You don't even need an instrument. And it's bookoo years old, and the tune is actually an old French folk song "Ah, Vous Disrais-Je Maman" so there's your folk roots. And everyone knows it. And you can't accuse it of being a project or contrived or insincere or pop or noisy or electric or new or nonsensical or stupid or boring or whiny or derivative or emotionless. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:35 PM I love it Mbo! That Is what I'm talking about. "Twinkle" is fabulous, as are so many of the lullabies... On a hair trigger today Mbo? Yes, thanks MMario, I found a whole bunch of versions late last night, and I am so excited about this song! It fits my criterions quite well! And he called for his pipe, And he called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three! And still I lust for MORE! MORE! MORE GREAT SONGS? |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Amergin Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:37 PM Connemara Cradle Song is very beautiful....at least to me... |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: MMario Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:41 PM At the risk of being branded "one of them thar religious nuts" On Eagle's Wings Here I am Lord |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 01:50 PM MMario, no way, not from me you won't... the hymns are sooo tasty in group singing, and if you love the music, you have nothing to fear... I just don't sing many of 'em. Not sure why, It's not a principle thing really. I guess that since I play for folkies, There are often a few outspoken ones that make you feel like you are a religious fanatic when you sing more that one a year... hard to take from a young audience. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Bearheart Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:50 PM Two of my favorites are Yeats' poems put to music: The song of Wandering Aengus, because it affirms for me the importance of valuing an ideal and/or a dream of what's beautiful, and being willing to follow it to the ends of the earth--- in the end the attainment is probably the quest itself and how it shapes one... And The Lake Isle of Innisfree, because it speaks to the things I value in a beautiful and simple way. Thanks for starting this thread. Bekki |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:52 PM The Rose. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:52 PM "Do you know what astonished me most in the world? The inability of force to create anything. In the long run, the sword is always beaten by the spirit." Napolean Bonaparte, Late in life. I couldn't bear to let this thread die... I hope I'm not being greedy, but I want to know more magical songs, and I'll bet you know lots... |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Sorcha Date: 28 Jul 00 - 12:14 AM Well, how about the Yeats poem set to music, "Down By the Salley (Sally) Gardens" which is not the reel Sally Garden, or (and I know he was something of a "wank/wonk") John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" or "Sunshsine on My Shoulders"? Don't know about the "roots" for those, tho. It's pure corn pone, but Hank Wms Jr's "Jambalaya" does it for a lot of audiences, or "Dueling Banjos". Also, maybe lots of (all?) of CCR stuff--- |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 28 Jul 00 - 12:22 AM Yeah, I think though with John Denver the scale tips to "its the singer". He has one HECK of a soulful enthusiasm. Fogarty too (CCR). Jamalaya is a definate winner for many many people, me included. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mark Cohen Date: 28 Jul 00 - 03:08 AM Hey, On Your Way Home is in the DT! No tune, though. (I have this sneaking suspicion I may have posted it there, cause it has my initials at the bottom. But I don't remember doing it at all. Please, somebody tell me you did it and my memory is not totally failing...) It was written by Luther Schutz, who is an emergency physician in Washington state. (I used to know the name of the town he's in, too....) Anyway, I'm always partial to songs written by doctors. But it is a truly wonderful song, that I first heard sung by Richard Scholtz and members of Motherlode at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in 1986. It's worth learning if you can find the music. I'll get to my songbooks soon and give you some other ideas. And thanks for the kind words. Even an old folkie/fogey can get the Starship reference! Or was that still Airplane...? Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: MMario Date: 28 Jul 00 - 08:51 AM it's a bit silly, but "Shrimp boat's is a-comin'" is next to impossible to hear and remain depressed |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Mbo Date: 28 Jul 00 - 10:57 AM I was listening to the live performace of "Hey Jude" by Paul McCartney, from his concert Tripping The Live Fantastic. I certainly feel this song has the qualities you describe. Ask the thousands of people at the Brazilian concert--the largest concert in the world ever! --Matt |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: Sean Belt Date: 28 Jul 00 - 11:21 AM Hmmm.... How about "Well May the World Go" written by Pete Seeger? It's inspirational and has a good melody. Others that come immediately to mind are "How Can I Keep From Singing", which may be a little to 'hymn-like' for you, but is beautiful, nonetheless. And "Matt Hyland", which is a good ballad speaking to triumph in the face of adversity. Also a darned good melody. - Sean |
Subject: RE: Sweet Magical Songs Needed From: GUEST,dan evergreen Date: 28 Jul 00 - 11:29 AM I would vote for "Lassie Wi' the Yellow Coatie," a wonderfully sweet song with a lovely swinging melody. (I'm getting the urge to go play it now.) |

I see skies of blue, clouds of white The bright blessed day and the dark sacred night... And I think to myself, What a wonderful world! The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people going by I see friends shaking hands, saying How do you do? They're really saying, I love you! I hear babies cry, I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll ever know And I think to myself, What a wonderful world! |

Subject: Lyr Add: Lifeline^^ From: Branwen23 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 03:26 PM How about "Lifeline"?... Goes like this.... "Won't you throw me down a lifeline, the ship is sinking fast. I'm afraid that I might drown before the storm has passed. Oh what if I'm set adrift upon the raging sea? Ah, what will become of me? Ah, what will become of me?
Won't you throw me down a lifeline, help me climb on board, (I hope I did that correctly...) -Branwen-

(In a concert I saw last year, Dick Gaughan called "Now Westlin' Winds" a perfect song.) And what about some of Stan Rogers: "The Mary Ellen Carter" just for starters. |
