Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bobert Date: 30 Jul 09 - 03:22 PM Ya' know what??? The more I ponder Obama's "Beer Summit" the more I like it... The US has gotten way too stuffy at that level... Yeah, I think it is geniuos... And I don't think it would hurt one bit for Obama and Putin to sit down and knock back a couple chilly ones, either... Prolly do a "world" of good!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jul 09 - 09:28 PM Actually it was a foursome at the table in the Rose Garden, and Joe Biden was only sipping non-alcoholic beer. There was a press conference later but I didn't pay any attention to what was scripted there. The beer is what was important! Cheerily, Charley Noble, who was sipping Oatmeal Stout |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bill D Date: 30 Jul 09 - 10:06 PM ...and by golly, Gates had a Sam Adams, just as I advised! I think they read Mudcat and heard my suggestion. So, I now must divide my support equally between Gates and Crowley.... Biden becomes irrelevant, as he says he has never had a drink of alcohol in his life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Joe_F Date: 30 Jul 09 - 10:32 PM I can see the whole salvation of the poor old human race In the bath! In the bath! Let the leaders of the world all meet together face to face In the bath! In the bath! There's room for Ike and Khruschev and all those other chaps, Macmillan, Viscount Monty -- then we'll have peace, perhaps, Provided Swann & Flanders get the end without the taps, In the bath! In the bath! The task of updating the names of the personages mentioned is left to this company. As for me, I'll be happy to supply fluffy towels & Sam Adams. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: meself Date: 30 Jul 09 - 11:08 PM Obviously they read Mudcat - the whole idea of a chug-a-lug summit was proposed here first (a tip of the sombrero to Peace!). |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bobert Date: 31 Jul 09 - 08:04 AM What would the world be like now if George Bush and Saddam had sat down at a picnic table and knocked down beverages of choice??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Jul 09 - 04:02 PM Bobert- Well, the U.S. government would have saved about $1 trillion, over 4000 U.S. soldiers would not have been killed (not to mention the 40,000 wounded), and we might not have ended up in such a deep recession. But why sweat the small stuff? Evidently Prof. Gates and Sgt. Crowley had only complimentary things to say about one another at the beer blast. Neither one apologized, nor did Obama. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Jul 09 - 05:31 PM What would the world be like now if George Bush and Saddam had sat down at a picnic table and knocked down beverages of choice??? Since Bush was a reformed alcoholic and Saddam was leader of one of the biggest Muslim nations, and neither could therefore be seen to have a beer or anything similar, the drinks tray might have been a little bit sparse. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bobert Date: 31 Jul 09 - 06:17 PM "...beverage of choice..." |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Amos Date: 31 Jul 09 - 07:25 PM Depends on who was choosing; lysergic acid diethylamide, for example, might be the offering of some, while others would vote for hydrochloric... A |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bobert Date: 31 Jul 09 - 07:45 PM Man, that reminds me that I got 2 tabs of Mr. Natural in a book somewhere... I never throw out a book... Just can't temember which book I put it in... Believe me, I've looked... Wonder what the shelf life is on that stuff??? Yeah, that's even better, Amos... Put Obama and Putin together with each their own does of Mr. Natural... Yeah, that oughtta get the ball rollin'... Missle defense in eastern Europe??? Man, that is a funny idea... I mean, can you just see it... "Sheet fire, Pute, this is some dynomite shit..." |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: gnu Date: 31 Jul 09 - 07:50 PM Tab... the stuff that tastes like Coke... ca Cola? The soft drink? |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: Bobert Date: 31 Jul 09 - 09:01 PM Yeah, gn-zer... Tastes just like, ahhhhh, newspaper... Only alot different after effects... Nothin' like Tab, tho... Might of fact, nothin' like chicken either... |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: gnu Date: 31 Jul 09 - 09:24 PM I like chicken.. too bad it's so awful hot here or I'd fire up the oven and cook me up some. Guess the peaches and cherries and melons will have to do for now. Ya know... I miss the tangerines most... out of season now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: SharonA Date: 31 Jul 09 - 09:41 PM Even as of yesterday afternoon, the local news had predicted that Gates would be drinking a Red Stripe (he ended up drinking a Sam Adams Lite). Changing his mind on that was a VERY good move. Can you imagine the political fallout of having the one adversary drinking a beer with RED in its name and the other one drinking a beer with BLUE in its name? (i.e. There'd be speculation that Gates was hinting that he's a closet Republican despite donating to Obama's AND Hilary's 2008 campaigns. Not sure what Crowley's political stripe is.) Still not sure why Joe Biden sat in on the "summit"... perhaps as a moderator? As some sort of "designated driver" of the discussion, since he was the only one drinking non-alcoholic beer? Lord knows Biden was the one most likely to have said something "stupidly" off-the-cuff and to have re-ignited the conflict! |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: meself Date: 31 Jul 09 - 10:34 PM Maybe Biden was there to provide "racial balance" (two Whites and two Blacks, rather than one lone White with two Blacks who were, in a sense, his antagonists). And/or, it might have been thought desirable to have one person there who wasn't implicated in the conflict. Or maybe he's good to have beside you in a brawl. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: SharonA Date: 31 Jul 09 - 10:53 PM meself: Since Obama's technically half-Caucasian and half-African, there should have been racial balance with just him, Crowley and Gates at the table. Unfortunately (and, I think, disgracefully), our society still thinks in terms of color and labels mixed-race people "Black" so, frankly, having Biden there provided COLOR balance (two light-skinned people and two dark-skinned people). I'm guessing that he was just there for moral/political support of younger politician Obama. I agree, though, that Joe Biden would be a good man to have beside'dja in a brawl! |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: bankley Date: 01 Aug 09 - 11:20 AM as long it wasn't King cans of Shlitz... after 24 of those, Peace, it still tastes like shlitz... I had a few Czech Bud in Berlin... Now I prefer Leffe Belgian blonde... (thanx Eddie Reid) or Bitburger (Deutsch) (danke Walthar Leiderschmitt) but most anything cold will do when the 'thirst' is on... except draft, then I need Tylenol extra strength.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: gnu Date: 01 Aug 09 - 12:34 PM Draught is okay if your system is used to it. But, if you drink ale that is not pasteurized only occasionaly, pain killers and sleeping outside may be required. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Aug 09 - 12:51 PM Pasteurised beer? What an unpleasant thought. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: gnu Date: 01 Aug 09 - 01:06 PM Almost all bottled or canned beer here in NB, Canuckistan is pasteurized. If it is draught, it MUST say "draft" on the label. Tavern beer on tap is draft. And you can buy small "kegs" at the powerhouse (liquor store). We do have a limited number of "agency stores" which are found in rural areas. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Aug 09 - 02:06 PM If it is draught, it MUST say "draft" on the label. I thought normal spelling of Engloish words was allowed ub Canada... So does that mean you have to have a sign on a beer pump or a beer tap saying that it isn't a bottle or can? Like saying "this product may contain nuts" on a packet of peanuts? |
