Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Steve Gardham Date: 07 May 17 - 04:34 AM Talking about tempo of the song this could vary on the cartoon itself and in our versions. When Popeye was singing the verse it went at a steady pace and would even slow down to deliver the last few lines at the end of the cartoon, with the toot toot on his pipe. However the tune was also played very fast and in a staccato way when the exciting action was taking place, and it was at this pace that we often sang the parodies. Remember Bluto's and Olive's version of the bawdy song 'Abraham Brown', 'Barnacle Bill the Sailor'? What a pair of voices! Oh, and Olive's 'I want a clean shaven man'. Bluto and Popeye scrapping to get a decent shave because of Olive's song and at the end she walks away with a naval officer with a big bushy beard. Those were the days! Wimpy, Swee'pea, the Goonies, Abu Hassan..... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: meself Date: 07 May 17 - 02:10 PM "on a screen about one foot square" We had a TV like that - even smaller, probably - till after I'd grown up and left home. It was bought in the '50s - they made'm to last, then. Anyway, one of the local children, from a bit of a rough home, was quoted as telling his parents that our TV was "so goddamn small, you have to have to stand in a line and take turns watching it!" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Popeye The Sailor Man From: Senoufou Date: 08 May 17 - 10:04 AM I've been looking this up, and according to Wikipedia, the first animated Popeye cartoons were created in 1933!! I suppose his little song was to encourage children to eat up their spinach. However we always loved our spinach anyway, and never minded eating it. It didn't make us as strong as Popeye though. |
Subject: ADD: Sindbad the Sailor (from Popeye) From: Joe Offer Date: 09 May 17 - 12:48 AM SINDBAD THE SAILOR [From the cartoon film "Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor" (1936)] (Sammy Timberg / Bob Rothberg / Sammy Lerner) Jack Mercer as Popeye & Gus Wickie as Sindbad - 1936 SINDBAD: I'm Sindbad the Sailor, so hearty and hale I live on an island on the back of a whale It's a whale of an island, that's not a bad joke Its lord and its master is this handsome bloke Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! I scare all creation on land or on sea But talk about women, they all fall for me I take my adventures wherever they're found I don't wanta brag, folks, but I've been around Who's the most phenomenal extra-special kind of fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! From the Valley of Serpents these diamonds I took I cleaned out those serpents with one dirty look! Now look at this monster, so strong and so huge He'd frighten King Kong, but he's only my stooge The capture of Boola for me was just fun Whoever said two heads were better than one, hah-hah Who's the most phenomenal extraordinary fellow? (Youse! Sindbads the Sailor!) On one of my travels, I ran into this Now there was a thrill I'd be sorry to miss He spread out his wings, and the sunlight grew dim He took me in his feet, but I ran off with him Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! Who's the most phenomenal extra-special kind of fellow? Sindbad the Sailor! I'm afraid of nobody under the sun All I say is "Boo!" and my enemies run! Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellow? POPEYE: It's Popeye the sailor man! SINDBAD: Who? POPEYE: Popeye the sailor man I'm strong to the finich 'Cause I eats me spinach I'm Popeye the sailor man I'm one tough gazookas Which hates all palookas What ain't on the up and square I biffs and I boffs 'em And always outroughs 'em But none of 'em gets nowhere If anyone dasses to risk me fisks It's 'Bop!' and it's 'Wham!', understand? So keep good behav'our That's your one lifesaver With Popeye the sailor man I'm Popeye the sailor man Popeye the sailor man I'm strong to the finich 'Cause I eats me spinach I'm Popeye the swag whaler man! Who's the most remarkable extraordinary fellah? (You, Popeye the Sailor!)
