Genie - permission from me for anything you may have.

As far as the Mummers Play goes - I made it quite clear to everyone taking part that I expected it to be on YouTube at some point so, hopefully, no objections there, even to the rehearsal.

I want my performance as The Music Stand to be available to everyone! I expect awards from the Motion Picture Academy, Cannes, Sundance, the Pulitzer People, possibly even a Nobel Prize.

Hey, Rap, don't forget your performance as Dr. Death or whatever the character was called.   Can't believe that you were there for the whole Getaway (admittedly I wasn't) and I still haven't really seen you. Hell I didn't even see your Oscar-bound turn as the Music Stand. What's next?--you're obviously way beyond the tree stage. There's always Shakespeare--A Midsummer Night's Wall, etc.

As for the other permissions, yes, there are many reasons for needing permission: copyrights, competition with commercial recordings by the performers or songwriters, sound quality or flubs that make the recording 'not ready for prime time' (below the performer's standards), videos that make you look fat(ter), etc., etc.   I'm not even making some of my own videos public until I have all the copyright 'ducks in a row', so to speak, as well as the legal protection of my imaginary playmate's name, etc.   That doesn't mean I won't share the videos with a few dozen or hundred of my closest friends, but them there inter-tubes is dangerous places beset with all manner of thieves, etc.

Also, Jennifer clearly announced, both nights, that no audio or video files would be shared online without the express permission of the perpetrators ... er, performers. Seems in the past some people have been unhappy with unauthorized videos of themselves showing up online.

As for the Mummers' play, as I've said before, I can't imagine anyone who volunteers to participate therein being worried about their dignity or reputation as a thespian. ; )

Well it is certainly important that thespians have the same rights as the rest of us--and they do. There are actually quite a few states where thespians can get married to each other publicly.   Of course maybe Palin hasn't heard about this yet.

Genie,

"You too, sweet Severn". I guess that means I'm no longer singing sour, so I'd be glad and honored if you deemed it worthy of posting, after previewing the performance myself, of course. It'll be a way to share my version of "alternative music" with my daughter like she shares hers with me. Of course, her brand of "alternative" probably gets more airplay than mine.

By the way, the song in question ("A Rakish Young Fellow", collected in Sussex from the singing of Scan Tester) was in the public domain and can probably be considered "trad, arr. Savage" after I got through with it.

As SINSULL or Jacqui will probably tell you, Public Dough, Maine (Built entirely from State Tax Funding, hence the name) is a suburb of South Portland, over towards Chicken Chow and Broken Water.

One last thing:
In my previous list of highlights and thank-yous, I somehow forgot to mention the lovely gift of the very Golden Pea-foul....er, fowl... from SINSULL that the tail feathers of which had been so ably warmed by Big Mick in the play. [Insert your drag-racial joke here] It since has laid an egg, so Mick might be both a Mummer AND a Papa! So, congradulations and Sarah-Feenamints all around....

Well, the town has produced a lot of things but not to my knowledge a Nobel Prize winner. The closest it ever came was, I think, when Leona Schraedermann found her husband with Hortense O'Malley in the Congress Tavern at 17th and Spring back in '46 or '47. The resulting explosion was heard for miles and led to the demise of Hortense, Hermann, and most of the square block the Tavern was sitting on. There was an enhancement to the explosion -- Leona had found her husband "in fragrantly delicious" (as the the lawyers say) several times but always with a good "Dutch" girl, never a wee Irish colleen. Granted, Hortense wasn't exactly "wee" and several decades of hard living past her prime, but still....

Ma'am, I left Quincy some time back. I ain't ashamed of it an' I still got family livin' there. But I found I hadda leave town -- a little misunderstanding whether or not you are supposed to deal from the top or the bottom of a deck of cards -- and now I live in The West, where men are men and women wear jeans too. But I still remember those halcyon days of my youth and poor tho' we were I and all of my friends brought ourselves up in the world and are now respected and honored citizens, 'ceptin' for a couple or three who didn't and ain't.

Why would you be interested in my misspent prayer-filled youth?

Rap, methinks there be a song somewhere in that Quincy saga.   Are ya up to the challenge?

Ron, here's the link to your "Blue Heaven Medley" from the concert:
Ron Davies medley at Getaway 2010

I did a bit of 'creative editing' on that one because of a couple mistakes -- mine, yours, and my MacBook's.
First off, I was doing a lot of stop-and-start videos to check sound setting, etc., and when the concert started I forgot to push "Capture" again and tell the 'puter where to put the video, etc. I discovered this shortly after you began and corrected it, but I missed the entire first performer's song (which was really fine) and the beginning of "My Blue Heaven." Also, my internal mic seems to have some loose or dirty connections (Don't we all?) so there was intrusive static in places. I edited the static out, pasted your wonderful whistling at the beginning where "When whip-poor-wills call and evening is nigh, I hurry to my blue heaven" should have been, and I also clipped out the little part where you lost your place in the lyrics.
(I still have the undoctored footage if you want to see it.)

So far, your YouTube link is unlisted - meaning anyone who finds the link here or to whom you send it can see the video. Let me know if you want me to make it public (searchable, accessible to everyone).

Genie--

I have no problem if you want to make the "Blue Heaven" two songs public. I was fascinated by the story that goes with the songs-- the information comes from a wonderful book I read this summer--Public Cowboy #`1--a biography of Gene Autry, by Holly George-Warren.    I've talked about the book before on Mudcat. She actually interviewed Gene and after his death had unprecedented access to the estate.   But she was also given complete editorial control of the book--didn't have to clear anything with the estate. I'd recommend the book to anybody with any interest in Gene, in early "Western" music, in early "Western" movies--and a lot more.    "You're the Only Star in My Blue Heaven" is one of the few songs he really had a big hand in writing--of the more than 200 songs he is listed on as co-writer, in most of them it's just that he had an arrangement to share co-writing credit in exchange for recording it.

Thanks so much for recording.

You're right, the first performer was excellent--though I can't remember who it was.

Next time maybe I'll get more sleep beforehand and stand a better chance of remembering the song.   I actually put myself on as second in the program since I was afraid I'd crash before the end of the concert (but in fact the music in the whole concert was so good I didn't crash.

(I trust we won't have problems with copyright since you have posted the copyright info (thanks also for that.)   But I thought that copyright questions didn't enter into it if the concert itself was not set up to make money, though I may be wrong on that.

The issue of writing credit (and the royalties that go along with it) is fascinating.    I've just recently read about Chilton Price, violinist with the Louisville Orchestra and librarian with a Louisville radio station.   She wrote both "Slowpoke" and "You Belong To Me" (See the Pyramids).   But because she had no experience in publishing she offered to share credit on both with two country singers and writers she knew, Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart, friends of hers, who could and did publish and record the songs.

She seems to have had no regrets about the arrangement, saying that without the assistance of the two men the songs would never have been the hits they were, and their success opened doors for her.

Micca's song is so great--and thanks so much for him for transplanting the scene to the US so that we can enjoy it--as he pointed out we wouldn't have gotten much from the specifics in the original UK geography.

Oh, Micca's version of the song is based on fact! Why, Lord Franklin wanted his exploits to be remembered, so he stayed in various places long enough to tell his tale to local inhabitants.....thus places like Franklin Indiana, Franklin Tennesee, Franklin Ohio, and Franklin Kentucky were named for him! As a matter of fact, one famous stretch goes from Franklin Kentucky TO Franklin Tennessee...right thru Nashville on what is now I-65! He even made a side trip to Franklin, Alabama before he reached Louisiana. (The song would have been WAY too long & confusing if all those places were added....yessir, it would have!)

Note... Franklin Indiana is right close to I-65, also...so he was really trying to plot a course thru the area(s) that would prove beneficial to those who followed. It is little known that future highway planners actually based a lot of their routes on the trail of 'Franklin's' and help from local legends about good ways to proceed!

Charley,
I use Safari and I can hear Micca on YouTube very well. DK why you can't but I hope you can clear it up. Micca's song is a keeper.

The audio on some of my Getaway videos is a bit distorted. On others there's little or none. And in at one video, Songster Bob's guitar is barely audible but the vocalist, Clare Parmelee (sp?) is easy to hear. DK why that is either.

I'm also trying to identify all the perpetr ... er, performers at the concerts, but their names are not all on the list of attendees (and some may be identified here at Mudcat and in the conference by aliases such as Mudcat names).
Jennifer, if you have a list of all the concert performers in sequence, that would be helpful to have.

I'm wondering if one of the Getaway Gurus has a digital list of the Getaway attendees you could email me.   That would save me a lot of time that otherwise would be spent typing in the names and e-dresses of all the performers I videoed. It also might include some latecomers whose names aren't on the printed sheet.

Here's a link to Ron's lovely, albeit curtailed and reconfigured, medley of My Blue Heaven and You're The Only Star In My Blue Heaven.

Our Elizabeth..... what can one say? Remember when she came to us at Havre de Grace? She was a fifteen year old girl, singing with her mom. I remember standing there in that hall, and listening to this young girl sing these very old songs with such an understanding, and I remember being astounded by the depth of that understanding from one who was really just starting to creep over the edge of adulthood. In listening to that wonderful NPR segment linked above, those memories came flooding back. She, once again, nails completely her understanding of her craft and that song. I am so proud to be able to tell folks that I know this wonderful singer, and given the high level she came to us at, just the thought of watching her mature even further in this music leaves me a bit breathless. Her obligation to the music is large, and she embraces that with dedication and love.

All the best,

Mick

I have not said anything on this thread though I have read every word with interest. I had a busy time after leaving my second Getaway (all good, visiting Baltimore, being on the Mystic Whaler, visiting family in DC, going with them to Deep Creek Lake). I did not take as many pictures as I usually do in such situations. I am not a performer, but am an avid fan and the weekend was wonderful. I dearly loved getting to hear and to sing along with so many wonderful and welcoming folks. I was thrilled to meet Max, the Founder of the Feast, and to meet and spend time with Joe Offer whom I have long admired electronically. Alaska Mike and Tawmmie were terrifically larger than life. Micca was great fun. Janie Meneely likewise. I had met Big Mick before but feel we are now really friends. Always a joy to hear MMario. I would pay to hear Gordon Bok read a phone book. Colleen Cleveland, I owe you. I do not know all the 'Catters I met, have not connected names and faces, but I do know this:

Getaway 2010 was a wonderful experience. I hope to be back. I could not begin to describe it as well as Amos did and won't try. But there were too many highlights to list, and friends new and old to miss.

True about the various feasts; I meant Max for this one because I am posting on this one. So many feasts we share!
I have no doubt omitted more than I recall at any one moment.
MMario, I do not chide. I beg. Or grovel if necessary.
And Janie, thank you. I am the one you describe so aptly, one of many.

The Getaway was the middle of a very busy 2 week tour for me - but it was truly the highlight! It was a long weekend of song immersion at a lovely rural campus ... with dear freinds; new and old!

Thanks so much for letting me participate!
