WHile Rapaire's remark literally eans "wherever there is faith" it is actually in a code known only to certain large white males; he is actually asking Jerry to wash his feet.

Mick, I'm so thrilled that you east coasters are getting to share in the wonderful musical talents, song lore, warmth, and wit of our own Pacific northwest's David Ingerson.    We shouldn't keep him all to ourselves, after all. David's been going to Ireland annually for a while and it's great that he can share the expansion of his musical trove with the folks on the 'right coast' as well as with those of us on the 'left' one.

Nancy, I want to thank you and others who bring guitars, etc., to share with those of us who don't want to entrust our old Martins, Guilds, Gibsons, etc., to United or any other airline. Being able to use a 00018 with light strings in the concert is infinitely better than trying to play a 3/4 size Ibanez that doesn't want to stay in tune and doesn't feel like my 'baby'.

Rap, was the person who took your yarn away MMario? And did he knit you some socks with it?

-------

Linda,
I do hope you don't have any lasting ailments from that fall on the slick ramp.
You and anyone else who was with you at the time really should report it to the West River powers-that-be if you haven't already. They need to put some non-slip treads on those ramps, because those ramps were so slick in the rain that I'm surprised you were the only one who fell. : )

Thanks, Genie, No lasting injury. People immediately brought me ice (was it LEJ?), helping hands and ibuprofen, and by next morning I had no pain at all. I'll get to spend this weekend contra dancing at the New Jersey Folk Project's Fall Festival just fine. Carl fell right after I did, but with less of a WHOMP! The Camp director came over right away, too, but his solution was that the ramp needed a power washing (after we left). I'm really glad nobody else got the thrill ride we did. We might need to monitor this issue for next year. Gosh, I hate being a guinea pig!

I'm still on the road - in PA right now. I love checking in here when I have the chance, to see how my Getaway pals are doing, even though I haven't been able to post much.
So often since the getaway ended, I've been aware of phrases of songs, melodies, or snippets of conversations, which resurface as my brain gets itself reorganized. One of the many wonderful gems that I'm taking away from this year's Getaway is having had the opportunity to chat with Jerry's lovely Ruth. Talk about gems. She is a jewel. She carries with her a quiet, gentle grace which is pure goodness. And when Ruth says in her quiet, assured way, "That is the truth." you KNOW with absolute certainty that it is. I can still hear voice. Jerry, give her a hug for me, please.

I only held your yarn hostage until you rolled over on the floor and played with the end of it as I dangled it in front of your paws face. Then you took the entire skein and tangled it all up until you had to untangle it your own self.

Sorry, quite right about caritas. But it still invokes the eashing of feet which may be less appropriate for Rapaire to go around inviting...He's a bit tricky that way.

Lordy, Amos. You got a thing for feet or something? I wash my bitter feet alone, like Danny Deever or the Colour Sergeant. Granted, they usually have to put on an extra shift at the water treatment plant when I do, but still....

Ain'y my thing. It was your idea to start spouting Roman homilies. "Ubi caritas is a hymn of the Western Church, long used as one of the antiphons for the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday. ... The current Roman Catholic Missal (1970) reassigned it from the foot-washing mandatum to the offertory for the Holy (Maundy) Thursday mass, " (See Wickilink above).

But anybody interested in music ought really to listen once to the Durufle setting of "Ubi Caritas" referenced in the article.   So peaceful and stirring at the same time.

Admittedly I'm not an unbiased observer, since I've been lucky enough to sing it several times--including at least once for a wedding, I'm pretty sure.

No more time now to address the actual subject of the thread, the Getaway.   All I can say now is that the afterglow shows no signs whatever of diminishing.

Sandra and Gene (of Adelphi Records), deserve a big thank you for the care and late night feeding of those of us layabouts in the Peace Cabin. Every year they appear with coffee, cheese, crackers, chips, dips and other yummies to keep us fueled during the late night song fest, do more than about anyone to keep the place picked up and the rest of us out of trouble, tuck those in that need tucked in, and act as general den mother and father. They are quiet enough about doing it that most folks aren't even aware.

This ol' southern hillbilly gal sends the hugs I didn't get to give when you two slipped away Sunday night.

Yes, Janie, Amen to the kudos for Gene and Sandra. They surely deserve it and more!
I'm one of the many who didn't realize who the 'elves' were who magically produced all, or at least most of, the munchies and beverages for late night in the Peace Cabin.   Unsung heroes who should not remain unsung.

I'm beginning to process the videos I made of the concerts. I knew there would be some static in some places because there's apparently been some problem with the connections on my internal MacBook mike for a few months now.   But some performances came out pretty clear and on the others there are at least portions that did, so there should be some very nice audio and video to share (to add to what various and sundry people took with their hand-helds).

As per official Getaway policy (not to mention common courtesy) I won't post any audio or video online in a public way without the express permission of the victims ... er, culprits ... er, perpetrators ... OK, performers.       That means if y'all don't answer my PMs or emails, your songs won't be shared online.    But I'll try to send you mp3s by email in any case.

I already have videos processed of Ron Davies, Alaska Mike, Valentine Doyle, Janie, the Alan A-Dale Singers, Martha Burns, Judy Cook, Roger from Baltimore, and a couple others.
More to come.

YouTube now has an "unlisted" option whereby a video can be posted but accessible only to those who have the URL (which can be sent from the person posting the video).   These videos not only are not "un-searchable" but also won't be found by people who are trying to access all the videos posted in a given time period. I can send people mp3s as email attachments, but the unlisted YouTube URL is probably be the best way to let people see their videos before deciding whether to make them public.
Stay tuned.

Genie

Like everyone else. I'm, still being flooded with wonderful memories of last weekend. Last year my basement was flooded, and it wasn't nearly as much fun. Ruth and I were reliving the weekend over breakfast this morning. Ruth is not a "folkie" but she's a genuine folk, and she had a great time. I enjoyed watching her and KT together... the dearest of old friends who'd never met before. I don't think we could have handled the all-night sings, so we didn't experience the festival in that way, but that doesn't mean that we didn't enjoy every moment we were there. I posted a photo on Facebook that I took at sunrise on Sunday morning and it's now frramed and hanging about my desk in my office. I may well use it on the cover of my next book. The story I wrote about the cane Judy Goddard donagted to the auction titled the Shepherd's Watch is not only a story now, but will most likely be the title of my next book. And the cane is leaning next to my desk as a reminder of the good time we had.

Like everyone else, I brought much more home from the Getaway than I took with me.

I also wanted to mention that Ruth and I thought the food was very good at told the manager of the camp.

I wish we were closer. The drive down and back were nightmares. I'll have to forget alot about that before I feel like driving down again.
That said, it was more than worth it!

...and I have just begun adding names and editing some in my pics at this site for example, it was Donna Fletcher who Leadfingers played with in one of his many helper spots. Donna is a stalwart of the local blues scene and a regular at the Peace cabin goings-on.

(I see 8-12 views on most pics, and up to 16-17 on some....which means many have not seen them....and some may have been there twice..)

Well,
This first-timer is very, very glad that I made the trip to the getaway. It was just what I needed on many levels.

My only regrets are that I did not find time to have conversations with more people or at the very least exchange more introductions.
Also, had I known how rocking the Peace Cabin was after the concerts, I might have headed over a little earlier from the retreat center. That said, I really had a wonderful time, non-stop in every location and with every group of people. You really are all such wonderful people!

I really look forward to coming back, though I believe next year's dates may conflict with another festival I have been participating in these past few years. We'll see.

In any case, I am renewed and freshly inspired to work more with and through music. Thank you all for that.

Yours in song,
Siochain

Oh, and Colin had a great time too.

I'll send it to you via FaceBook and if you say OK, I'll make it public on YouTube.

Oh, but I don't know the spelling of Colin's last name.   If you PM me that, I'll spell it right.
Or I can just leave the tags as "Rose and Colin" if you prefer.

Terry, why am I not surprised that you're not shy about having your videos posted?   : )
You always sound great, whether soloing or backing up other musicians on mando, whistle, etc.

Rose, I'm glad to do what I can to video and share parts of the concert.   This year I had lots of help from people with hand-held video cameras, which are more maneuverable in the Peace Cabin and many workshops than the MacBook does. Also, my built-in mic needs cleaning or repair, so I didn't get as good sound as I did two years ago. (I think the configuration of the concert stage and audience affected that too.) But for purposes of keeping wonderful memories alive, it worked out pretty well.

Ebbie, I opened Bill's pics easily in Safari and saved the ones I wanted to, cropped and all, using "Grab."

Now I just need help naming all the recognizable faces in the pics.   I'll post some of them in a FaceBook album if that's OK with Bill. Then y'all can "tag" yourself of anyone else you recognize.
(Of course, if anyone sees a pic of someone making a weird face, slouching, with spinach in their teeth, maybe it's best NOT to tag that pic. LOL)

Thanks:

To those entrusting me with singaround co-leads, Rapaire (who made a late grand entrance in his executioner's mask) and Gorgeous Gary, (singing better I've ever heard him all weekend) for their jobs well done in co-leading with me. And, of course all those who brought and contributed great songs and singing.

To Terry Silver for the ride and good company all week.

To Lisa Null for vocal help and encouragement.

Jennifer Woods for her overflowing flood of river allusions in introducing my first evening concert spot and to anyone who applauded me afterwards. I finally got THAT over with.

For all those floating verses I found that people accidentally dropped in the puddles. I recycled a few, soggy though they were.

To anyone I bought from or sold to in the auction and to those who ran it.

To Gene & Sandra Rosenthal, Kathie Mack, David Ingerson, Bob Clayton, Dick Greenhaus and many others too numerous to mention for little favors rendered before and during the weekend.

For all who oganized, set up and tore down. And those who cooked.

For all who didn't notice or merely ignored any words I forgot or spun around and sliced, diced and julienned in the folk-processor.

For all I heard, learned or shared.

And to everyone who was there, whether I got to talk to you or hear you or not. I'm a better man for sharing space with the lot of you.
I hope I was able to give back even a fraction of the joy you all gave me. If not, I'm deeply in your debt and I owe you.

Oh, I've got lots of 'em, ClaireBear -- including you, both singing your wonderful original song and making a fool of yourself with the rest of us hams in the mummers' play! Let me know if it's OK to share them. (You too, sweet Severn!)

And thanks to Bearded Bruce for bringing extra instruments to lend (though I didn't need to use his this time) and all that wonderful ginger to sell.

I'm delighted to know that the auction brought in lots of $.   Getaway-ers are so generous that my pre-owned capo, which sells retail for about $24, brought in $22, and several pre-listened-to CDs brought in about $3 apiece.   I brought my small washboard (as opposed to the pocket sized one) to sell but couldn't bring myself to part with it. Sorry. (Next year I'll bring a bigger one.) I got a great deal on Severn's 4-CD Patsy Cline set (still shrink wrapped) and someone's little step-on-lid-raising wastebasket too. Not to mention buying enough of Bruce's ginger to maybe get me qualified for The Biggest Loser if I don't ration my supply strictly.

"Froggy Went A-Courtin'" is processed and ready for viewing as soon as I get permission from Charmion (CeltAddict?) and Edmund. Terry's already given me a blanket (permission, that is).

Rose and Colin are also among those who have amended Rani Arbo's lyric phrasing to make it flow more normally than the way Rani initially sang it. Tennyson's poem does not have the same rhythmic pattern to verses 2 and 4 as to verses 1 and 3, if you read it as you'd naturally speak it, but Rani Arbo originally sang it as though it did, and to me it sounded odd (accents on many of the wrong syl-LAB-bles in verses 2 and 4).

"Crossing The Bar" mudcat thread

Betsy Wellings, of Chehalis, WA (now La Center, I think) did a great job of making the prasing sound more natural, and I did my own revision of the phrasing when I sang the song (even altering the tune a bit on verses 2 and 4). But Rose and Colin put their own individual stamp on the lyric phrasing, as well as adding their own unique harmonies, and the result was sheer beauty and stirring emotion. I hope that's on one of your CDs, Rose.

You're next, Janie. ; D
(Of course, I'll let you see/hear yours first. Then you can tell me if it's OK to share it.
You sounded great, though, and we were all singing along with you.)

Genie, do you really need permission from each singer to be able to post a video?   I can't imagine anybody objecting.   Most of us, I'd guess, are just flattered to be considered.   You certainly have blanket permission to post anything I'm on.

We know we're not perfect--as Jerry says, it's just a bunch of folks making music. I just like to hear the room singing along--after all, as part of the audience I sure like to do it myself.

I even managed to forget the easy part of one of my songs--fortunately the audience didn't forget. My excuse would be that I was one of the 6 or 7 who sang in the dawn Sunday morning.   Really intended to get a nap sometime during the day but the music was just too good all day. And then til about 3 Monday morning, when I did crash.   Knew it would happen eventually.

Getaways just seem to get better and better---though I have to admit the visit by the UK chantey group--why can't I remember the name?-- a few years ago--including a bunch of Mudcatters, as I recall-- is still one of the alltime highlights.

Well, yes, you do need permission from each person before posting a video. It may be a pro forma exercise, and a pain in the ass, but once something is posted, it's out there forever, and people may have their own reasons for not wanting their performance out there. Thanks, Genie, for respecting this.

The UK chantey group was (were?) the Shellback Singers, and they were indeed great. We don't often get a chance to hear large choral group (other than ad hoc ones) at the Getaway, and the Shellbacks were a real treat.

I gotta get the sound fixed on my 'puter so I can hear Rose and Colin! My memory of the performace is that it was astonishingly beautiful, as was a later one in the retreat center. Their voices blend incredibly. Sure hope they'll come back!

Nancy

There are all kinds of good reasons for folks to get permission before posting videos - one of which is that not everything is in the public domain, and we might need to know who the author or composer of a song is in order to get permissions. Aside from that, some folks who make their living doing this, or at least do this semi-professionally, need to have a say in what gets put out in public.

Remember it's not "just us" watching videos - it's whoever that video gets sent to, or anyone who stumbles into it on YouTube.

Dan
