We just got in he door... an unpleasant drive home, using stoopid Mapquest directions and ending up having to go across the George Washington Bridge (after an hour's wait to get to the toll booth. It rained the last 50 miles, too, but nothing could dampen our spirits! We had a terrific time, met many Mudcatter for the first time and renewed old friendships with many others. I don't remember the last time I had such joy in being with people and sharing music. The festival was all highlights, so don't ask me to pick one. At least not tonight.

I dunno, I like the idea of sleep deprived posts. Gives the true feel of things. I hope all had a wonderful time, and next year, I swear I'm gonna plan life better. It was bad to be dropped off at National by David who was on his way to play harp and stay up until all hours. too hard! Did play a lovely, but chilly contra dance here in a beautiful old barn on Saturday. That was some consolation.
But not quite enough.

Well, seein' as I waas kinda a part-timer (just Sat and Sunday) I really can't speak for the entire festival but...

...yeah, Eb... Jerry and his very "stylin'" Ruth"ie" were there and she looked as good as he sounded... I left my own blues workshop early so I could hear Jerry's mini... It was worth it... Inspite of my attempts to give the Floozies a year off there were a couple who were ready and willin'... But then again, some of these womenz got alot more flooze-DNA than others...

Saturday night Bobert's Blues Band was, as per usual, a trainwreck in the makin'... Had Bill Thompson, who I have jammed with for years from DC, on harp, had Leadfingers on whistle, had Amos Mosses on geetar, Janie on tampborine and had, ahhhhhh, the Bobert on geetar and vocals... There's a little more to the story but I'll just let other fill in those blanks...

It was also very good to see our every own Max hisseff in attendence and had the pleasure of hearing him lay down one mighty fine version of Robert Johnson's "22-30 Blues"... Also, Amos Mosses played several very tastefully done blues songs... Me??? I kinda slacked a little but got in a few decent enough songs on my own...

KT??? Gotta love her... Purdy as a piccure and did get to hear her do one of her own songs on a borrowed geetar...

Kendall and jacqui brought the ol' hillbilly some fine gifts which I'll let other fill in... Poor Kendall was suffering from a bad back and was dredding the ride home... But... word on the street is that the reason for the bad back had somethin' to do with the "bronze" medal he wore proudly all weekend (wink, wink...)...

The food??? Well, my mama said that if ya don't have something nice to say then....

What else??? Nice "open tuning" workshop... Little over the ol' hillbilly's head but what ain't???

Oh yeah, also nice to meet Rapaire... He didn't even bring a gun with him... Nor did bb!!!... Vegas had it 7-3 that one of them would be packin' heat but....

Alaska Mike was there and looking healthy 'cept he ain't Alaska Mike no more as he has moved to Florida??? Florida Mike??? Don't sound right so I reckon we'll just have to stick with Alaska Mike...

Hmmmmmmm??? Don't nobody mess with Janie, ya'll... Just ask jacqui what Janie can do to a tamborine??? I mean, brings new meaning to playin' a mean tamborine...

Ahhhhhhh, hope Tinker and Sins made it home okay...

More later... Still recovering data as more brain cell show up for work...

B~

The weather was gorgeous except for Sunday afternoon, when it got rainy. I didn't think the food was too bad, and snacks provided by FSGW were always available, as well as coffee and tea. I must confess I didn't stay up late, but went to bed by midnight every night - I wanted to be awake for the workshops. Lots of highlights - but my favorite workshop was Charlie Noble's "Songs of Ciceley Fox Smith". Fascinating commentary, great singing and Charlie really brings the songs to life. I enjoyed every minute of it. Another very special thing for me was getting to spend some time with Big Mick, who hadn't been to the Getaway for a couple of years. He's in fine form and serenaded us on Friday night around the table in the recreation center, and also ran the Celtic Music workshop along with Jed Marum. His "Back Home in Derry" finale was so rousing - it doesn't get much better! Oh and Jacqui's Mummer's Play was a treat, as always. I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked with The Mainiacs - one thing about the Getaway is that it seems like you no sooner get there than it's time to turn around and pack to go home. Maybe next year I'll be able to stay over Sunday night.

I'll have a lot to add on here, being a first-timer. I even have a story coming out of the Getaway that I'll start working on today. In the meantime, it occurred to me that the ideal song to do in the gospel workshop would have been Getaway Jordan. I don't have a link to the song, but here's one to Healing Water, which several people asked about. I did it in the gospel songs workshop. The recording is with the Gospel Messengers.

Here's the link to my music. Just click on Healing Water.

One of the greatest things about going to the Getaway was meeting friends I'd only known over the internet. There were too many to mention, and I'll certainly forget some, but here are a few: K.T. Murphy is a room-illuminator. When she walks in the room, you might as well turn off the lights and save some electricty. She could light up Grand Central Station. Bobert was everywhere and I challenge anyone to see him without smiling! He is one of my very favorite people, and everyone else's, too. I met Bobert four years or so ago, but I didn't have the time to enjoy him that I did at the Getaway. That was worth the price of admission, in itself. Max was a special treat. I told him he is the cyber Izzy Young. Izzy owned the Folklore Center on McDougal Street in Greenwich Village in the early 60's and he wasis the center of the folk community without ever playing a note. Max is that for the worldwide cyber community and he's a fine musician and singer, to boot. It was also a plasure to meet Art Brooks and his charming wife and I spent quite a bit of time talking with them. What lovely people! Gordon Bok was a joy to see... an old friend I hadn't seen in too long a time. The same could be said for Caroline Paton and Linnaea, who I co-hosted a workshop with. And then there was Joe Offer, who I first met at the memorial for Sandy Paton. It was a real pleasure having the chance to spend some time with him. And then there were old friends Lisa Null, Kathy Westra, Bob Clayton and Jennifer Wood and many others.

Oh yeah. I was very happy to meet Judy Goddard. I was the high bidder on one of her canes (I threatened anyone who was considering trying to out bid me.) The cane is at the heart ot the story that is forming in my head, and perhaps even a song.

You can add Sally Rogers, Debbie McClatchy,Bill D., Dennis and Judy Cook, Chance and Susette Shiver, Genie, Amos, Roger from Baltimore and a ton of others, and I sill left more than that out, I'm sure.

Just as important were all the people I met and spoke with in workshops or just walking around, whose names I never learned. I enjoyed all of you and all you did to make thw weekend as great as it was.

Did I mention, I had a great time?

I'm not even home yet. I stopped at the local library so I could get this off the Internet.

As usual, I had a fine time. It was great to see Max after several years of not seeing hime. He showed me pictures of his kid and we talked about old times and current times. He looks very content.

It was the usual conflict of too many people to see and too many places to be all at the same time, but in different places. Micca and I ran the parody workshop. We were fortunate to be able to allow everyone who wished to participate to participate. Leadfingers led off with a song which ended with a newly met couple crashing into a tree due to driving after drinking. She ended up with his detached member in her hand. Severn followed with a parody which had several uncomplimentary references to the Christian religion. I was worried we would descend into anarchy, but we got back on a proper track.

Sunday night,s after the concert sing around was the best I have attended in a long time. It wasn't an exclusive Mudcat group, but close. I made it to bed by 4:00 AM. I hope to make it to bed tonight about 4:00 PM. There will be more tomorrow I am sure.

Roger in Baltimore (on a computer in Virgina).

...*slumping into chair after aforementioned drive*...Yeah, picctures soon.. I took about 130, though I have no idea how many are good yet.Maybe tomorrow,.(Maybe later tonight if I get a nap )

I am so lucky to hang out here where it all happens, and all these great people come to MY neck of the woods to make music and share bits of themselves. I'll meditate on who to leave out in my copious praise later...(how can you list 70-80 amazing people in detail?)

I will say that both evening concerts seemed better than usual...it's hard to raise the standards of 'wonderful', but somehow we managed.

Having 12-15 totally (to me) new faces and voices really was a treat....and some of the regulars were 'tolerable' also (and some of the far-travelers are fast becoming regulars.)

To those who expected me to have wood crafts, I am at least as disappointed as YOU that my van broke just as I started and I couldn't get them into the other car....next year.

,,,ummmm....more later...I am POOPED!

I'm home; it rained the whole way; the cats are happy to see me and I will probably post tomorrow when I've had some sleep.

KT finished up the Songwriter's Showcase with a FANTASTIC song that couldn't have been more appropriate if she had writteen it specifically for that...

Seeing Mike and Tawmmie was great; and I got to sing two of his songs to them and got thumbs up on both of them.

Celtaddict gave me a huge ego boost by complaining she didn't haer enough of my singing - so she got a private little concert Sunday evening in the lobby of the old dining hall.

More later.

Home, happy, and completely worn out. A small group of us sung the sun up on Sunday morning. Took a 2 hour nap mid-day, then stayed up until 4:00 this morning - workshops, concerts, conversation and company were absolutely as good as it gets. Spent most of my time evenings at the song circles in Peace cabin, and the music and voices were absolutely amazing. There really aren't words to convey how splendid the singing was. ( And Sins now has a truly epic piece of hideobilia to add to her collection.)

Let's do it again next week!

Singing was great, special kudoes to Jed, Mick(don't be surprised if I turn up again for lunch sometime soon), KT(sorry I didn't get a chance to say 'bye at breakfast..see above paragraph), Lucy, Ron, of course Amos, and the Usual Suspects for making it a real hootenanny.

The Dawn came up like Thunder out of the Bay, and we sang our Sun offerings under a stir of silver cloud....or did I dream that?

Dani, I have a carload of hugs to deliver to you.   I enjoyed collecting them so much that I was kinda hoping you wouldn't be able to attend next year either. Now, however, you are gonna go if I have to kidnap you to get you there. Otherwise, I'll be out on the corner of the camp driveway and Chalkpoint, all alone in a K-Mart pup-tent. Straining my ears to hear the sound of voices raised in song carried on wind from across the bay. (*sniff* the image is already bringing tears to my eyes.)

Subject: RE: 2010 Getaway Stories, Pics, Etc...
From: Jerry Rasmussen

Here is the beginning of the story... as it is flowing onto paper. I know I will rewrite it and tighten it up, but I am very much in a Mudcat state of mind tonight, so I wanted to share this, rough though it may be.

Cane and Able

The cane said "Buy me!" Or more accurately it enticed me over to the table and said, "Why don't you put in a nice, high bid on me?" The cane was lying there on one of the long tables that had been set up for the auction, surrounded by pieces of pottery, books and other odds and ends. I certainly wasn't looking for a cane. Even though I'm 75, the Lord has blessed me with strong legs. Why would an able-bodied man want a cane? What initially drew me to it was that I knew Judy Goddard, the person who had created it. Judy hand decorates wooden canes with Christian scriptures and writings. I'd never seen one of the canes, and I was drawn to it the minute I spotted it. When I picked it up, I noticed that it was a puzzle cane, and there was a trick to reading the quotation. There were no secret levers or panels to twist. It was more a matter of how you read it. Scripture is like that. Sometimes the meaning is not revealed with a casual glance. I was happy to see the quotation she used, because it is one of my favorites:

"Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love                               St. Francis of Assisi

God knows there is too much hatred in the world these days, and never enough love.

When I looked at the sheet where you could write down your bid, I was relieved to see that no one had placed a bid yet. It was early in the first day, so I didn't think it would go unclaimed until the final closing of bids the next day, so I gently placed the cane back on the table. I figured there'd be plenty of time to place my bid. Besides, I wasn't sure why I wanted to get the cane. I didn't know anyone I could give it to, and I didn't see any need for it myself in the foreseeable future. As the day wore on, my wife and I were preoccupied, enjoying the music. We were at our first Getaway, a folk festival presented by the Greater Washington Folksong Society. That afternoon we dropped by the auction tables again and I noticed that a friend had placed a small bid on the cane. As I turned it slowly in my hand, admiring the craftsmanship and the quotation, I had conflicting thoughts. My friend uses a cane, and it seemed like a cruel trick to outbid her when at least for the time being, I had no use for it. Once again, I placed the cane gently on the table and walked away. It wasn't until that night when I was lying in bed that the Lord talked to me about the cane.

Still working on recovering...we actually played hooky from our usual weekly English Country/SCA Dance group's practice tonight.

Definitely one of my best Getaway experiences ever. I really put a lot of effort into practicing some of my regular contributions and learning some new ones. Paid off in spades.

As usual, not enough time to catch up with or meet everyone. Never did get to hear Jerry or Gordon; guess I just happened to be in different places. Also didn't get a chance to chat as much with folks like Amiel and Marge Schotz or the Goddards as we have in past years.

On the flip side, I did get to chat more with Micca, Chance, LEJ, Roger, and Janie Meneely, so it all balances out. Getting to hear and meet Bill Steele was very cool. I was already familiar with some of his songs like "The Walls Have Ears" and "A Thousand Songs" that have been "adopted" by the filk community, but it was nice to put a face to the name.

Delightful to see and hear from Alaska Mike again. Also Jed Marum and Debbie McClatchy.

Was a bad, bad boy in the Saturday night concert. Again. 8-)

More later as a few additional brain cells revive...

Once again, it was a wonderful Getaway, although I'm still disappointed that Dani didn't come. It was nice to meet so many new people, and a special treat to meet the elusive and mysterious Abby Sale. Now I'm so tired, my head keeps pitching forward, and may crash into the monitor.

Just in after a drive of ten hours or so. We are enjoying a rapturous greeting from the cat, who loves the pet sitter but still wants to see us.

The Getaway was wonderful once again - a lot of old friends, some of whom we haven't seen in a few years, and some new ones.

Charmion has once again succumbed to BAD (Banjo Acquisition Disorder).

I was a little distracted this Getaway, due partly to a flooded basement and partly to the absentce of my family, but still, I had a great time. Seeing Debby again was definitely a highlight, as was leading a workshop with Sally Rogers (who was a highlight every time she sang), and singing "Love Will Guide Us" with her. The hard times workshop, the "In Memoriam" workshop (*sniff*), and spending some quality time, albeit brief, with friends like Mick and Annie and Jacqui and Kendall. The cap'n and his fair maid, by the way, did a fabulous mini-concert. Jacqui keeps getting better and better, and Kendall (who was sounding pretty good, for a guy with not much voice) can still tell a story I've heard six times and have me in stitches. I hope somebody got a picture of Kendall hanging around on the couch, very relaxed, with his shirt gaping open at the belly and his GRAMMY medal around his neck.

It was good to see Jerry again, though I didn't have much time to actually spend with him. Same for Max, MMario, and a dozen other folks. I did spend a fair amount of time with Caroline Paton, which is always a delight. Her version of Pierce Petis's 1 Corinthians 13 was amazing, as was Kathy Westra's "Open the Door Softly" - both purely a capella.

It was also a good Getaway for storytelling. Lots of good tales.

More later, I hope.

Dan "It's pronounced 'Shots'" Schatz ;-)

Awright, I'm home now.

I shall let others talk about my rave-review appearance as a music stand and as an official genuine member of Bobert's Blues Band.

Tired...a boring flight, a boring shuttle ride up from Salt Lake City...the house intact...the bills will come...more later.

Good to meet everyone. And Amos, she really IS 71 years old.

Made it as far as new jersey...

The Getaway was fabulous! I too, am too sleep deprived to post details just now, but will just say for now that I've kidnapped Tinker. She's safe and sound with me, here with me on the Jersey shore. More later.....

I'm back home safely after an 11 hour drive, much of it rainy in greater New Jersey but it got better!

It was a fine weekend as far as I was concerned. It started with showing up Friday evening with hardly knowing anyone, and gradually got better. I'm great with lyrics and terrible with matching faces and names. I left feeling I knew a whole lot more people.

There were some old friends who were there, including Sally Rogers who I knew way back in Michigan. This time I got to know Calico Jack much better, actually talk with the amazing Alaska Mike, swap stories and songs with George Ward, and lead about a dozen songs at very workshops and concerts.

I didn't have the energy this time around to do the late night singing which is a real shame. That's where a whole lot of bonding takes place.

The C. Fox Smith workshop went quite well as Maryrrf kindly mentioned above, despite my concern about it being scheduled at 10 am Sunday morning. There were at least 20 people there, relatively alert and quite willing to sing along on choruses. And about 10 of the songbooks were actually purchased, in addition to some CD's. Severn and Terry (Leadfingers) did a good job of leading "Copper Ore" and "Tow-Rope Girls" respectively, and Terry kindly provided whistle accompaniment for "Lumber." My only regret is that Amos still hasn't learned "Port o' Dreams." Maybe we can lobby him to work it up for next year.

Other highlights for me were Kendall and Jacqui's mini-concert, Sally Roger's mini-concert, the Parody Session, Ballads, Sea Shanties (although some of what was sung were not work songs ;~)), Songwriting with Gordon Bok and Jud Marum, Inland Waterways with George Ward, the Pub Sing with Amos, Old-Time Songs with Debby McClatchy and Molly Andrews, and Challenging Chrouses with Bill Day and Claire Norman. Of course I missed a whole lot of other competing workshops and mini-concerts.

Dennis Cook did a great job of managing sound for the evening concerts. But I'm too tired to try to describe them. Maybe tomorrow.

Cheerily,
CHarley Noble

Home again home again jiggety jig.
Just walked in the door. Jeri and deposited Claire at her hotel in Annapolis (we hope it was her hotel) then headed north in rain and wind and constreuction and all manner of crap. Each of us prefers to drive but neither of us was able to do it all so we drove and criticized and squabbled carefully all the way home.
I spent Day one of the Getaway in borrowed undies. Long sad story.
Once the crisis passed I spent every minute in music. Abby Sale was amazing. Had us teary one minute and blushing the next. Rose and Colin showed up and filled the rooms with beautiful harmonies. Mick as usual put up with our silliness and still managed to salvage his dignity. Can't say the same for Max - TMI re: him and his horse.
More tomorrow - 12+ hours on the road and I am tired.
But very happily wrapped in saran.

Oh the songs and ovices passing through my head this morning....Judy Goddard singing "When I Was a Boy" brought tears to my eyes at the Sunday concert. Lucy Goldberg's incredible voice, and all the others joining in on the chorus of "Wagon Wheel" late Sunday night (Early Monday morning) in the Peace cabin are keeping me company this morning to soften re-entry into the real world. (Gets a little confusing - son is starting his day with Flogging Molly blaring from his bedroom.)
