Subject: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: GUEST,Arnie without cookie Date: 12 Jun 07 - 03:56 PM I'm trying to chord Green Grow the Rashes O - a Rabbie Burns poem set to music. The version I have is by Cherish the Ladies and I really like the way they do it, but can't sort out the chords. I suspect it's in a minor key and I'd like to put it into Em or Am if poss. I have to confess that my chording skills are a bit lacking so any advice more than welcome. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Peace Date: 12 Jun 07 - 04:42 PM Arnie, I was able to hear a sound sample of aboput ten seconds. I'm pretty sure it's in a major key. The chords will be from the following (in G): G, Em, C, Am, D, Bm If you know of someplace I could hear the whole thing, I'll put the chords to it for you. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: GUEST,meself Date: 13 Jun 07 - 06:38 PM Now, if it were me, playing in G - I'd go to Am or some weird modal A chord rather than the Em Peace heard. Like: G Am C G(or Em) D C (or Em) repeat and fade It is one of those tunes that can work with various chords in various places. Play around and decide what sounds best to your ear ... |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Big Al Whittle Date: 14 Jun 07 - 07:59 AM Yes indeed - where would we be without anbiotics? Singing about being covered in green rashes....? Perhaps that's how Henry VIII came to write Greensleeves. Bits of his green rashes fell off.... |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Arnie Date: 14 Jun 07 - 02:31 PM Ho! Ho! Seriously though, when you look at the lyrics they are an acccurate reflection of today's society even though they were written over a hundred years ago by a bloke who died in his 20's - what a genius that man was! |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Tattie Bogle Date: 14 Jun 07 - 08:00 PM There's nought but care on every han', G...................................., In every hour that passes o', Am........................... What signifies the life o' man, C..................G.......Em, An' twere na for the lasses o', ....Am...............C........ Green grow the rashes O G....................... Green grow the rashes O Am...................... The sweetest hours that ere I spend (NOT spent!) C.......................G.....Em Sorry but no D chords in there. Also worth mentioning that the "original" Burns tune goes way up high in the chorus, whereas a lot of people sing the verse and the chorus to the same tune: the same chords work for both versions however. As for the "rAshes": that's Scots and it does sort of rub me up the wrong way if I hear people singing "rUshes"! (And me with an English accent!) Are spent amang the lasses O ....Am..............Em...... |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Tattie Bogle Date: 14 Jun 07 - 08:16 PM Oops I got my script in the middle of the song there, but hope you can follow it! BTW Arnie, Burns lived form 1759 to 1796 which makes him 37 I think, and 'twas more than TWO hundred years ago! Died of rheumatic heart disease, I believe, despite all his womanising. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Jun 07 - 08:16 PM Arnie, those words were written over 200 years ago by a bloke who died in his late 30s. He also edited two different bawdy versions of it - see "The Merry Muses of Caledonia". |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Green Grow the Rashes O From: GUEST,meself Date: 14 Jun 07 - 08:26 PM Sorry - but you can put in a D chord if it pleases you. |
