We gave Dad a good send off, Cats how weird, I sang lament for the oaks and Mum played it on her keyboard in the evening after the funeral!
Sad it is that good family get togethers always seem to happen due to the loss of one of the family!

I got my candle lit too Lucy.Hope everything goes well remember the happy times.My mother use to make a boiled cake and this last weekend after 17 years of her passing i got the recipe and have made it.I hope she is pleased that i am carrying on where she left off.

Thank you all so very much for your condolences and Hugs, they really do mean a lot to me. I have spent the last few days sorting out Mum and Dads financial affairs, so I have kept busy, but every now and then I stop for a good cry. I am heading up to Cheshire on Wednesday Morning early, as there is stuff to sort out. The funeral is on Friday at 10.30. I am going down to the funeral parlour to say my goodbyes to dad on Thursday and am making the floral tributefor the coffin myself. We have managed to laugh as a family about various things and are holding on to the happy times, like their golden wedding party in July, which was postponed from March as Mum had had a heart attack. One of the last things he said was in dad's inimitable humour, when the nurse asked him if he was allergic to anything, he replied "Only the wife and strange women!"
We are going to get him played in to The battle hymn of the republic as he said he always wanted 'John Browns Body' at his funeral!
He is being played out to Amazing Grace, one of his favourite tunes.
I was hoping for good weather but the forecast is not looking promising.
Thank you all once again for your support it is much appreciated, especially from those whom I know are still themselves raw from the recent losses of their own loved ones. I hope I can remain as brave as you have all been.

The hole in your life never quite closes, but it will shrink to a manageable level, believe me!

It's been 21 years last weekend since my dad passes, and 6 years since my mum did. I still miss them both.
It's only right that parents should be missed!

My condolences, Lucy. My own dad just passed away this past Thursday, and, while his passing was neither unexpected nor really mourned, as he was well on in years and had been in poor health and on "hospice" status for over a year, it is still hard to accept that someone who has been such a part of your life for so long is no longer here with us "on this side."

As Sapper said,

As time passes, the edges will, up to a point, heal.
You will be able to touch them, but not too roughly.

Lucy, I too had a lovely Dad. He's been gone over twenty years but I still sometimes think he'll be coming up to our door with a big bag of goodies from his allotment, as in former years He was a great gardener. It was hard to lose him but I took solace in knowing he was at last released from severe pain.

Let yourself grieve and in time the sadness will give way to happy memories. Treat yourself gently.

In one title and a very short paragraph, you captured the essence of this man in a way that made me wish I had met him.
