Now I see why preseason hockey is often not televised-- those are not real games but merely extended auditions and scrimmages! NHL Center Ice (online viewing) has a free trial going for the preseason; the camera work and playing are really bad-- I love my widescreen monitor but I can't wait to get back to regular-TV viewing and our recliners! Nice that some of the Crosby hype, Malkin hype, and Staal hype are diminishing-- of course they're brilliant but I can SEE it, I don't need to HEAR about it in every color comment! GO PENS! ~Susan |

If you look at past years' hockey threads, you'll quickly note that there is not usually much "trash talk" in the Mudcat hockey threads. Mudcat spirit on personal interests is more usually encouraging than competitive. There have sometimes been debates on NHL rules, but not usually insults directed at one anothers' teams. I say this despite strong feelings about one of my favorite team's arch-rivals' reputation. :~) I keep those comments at home! :~) I bet I'm not the only Mudcat hockey fan who uses colorful language during games. :~) (We need a MudGather for the playoffs!) Anyway this approach has been nice because as we narrow down in the playoffs, we're usually able to cheer one another (and one another's teams) onward. Kinda reminds me of the players' playoff handshake line. So this thread is meant to be a place to extol our own teams (or rag on 'em when they screw up), not to knock others'. ~Susan |

A recent preseason incident (the Downie hit) does nothing to help either...like drug use, unfair play, betting, cheating and a host of other things troubling pro sports. Too bad, it detracts from the vast majority of good will and fair play most common in pro hockey. Heartbreaking too, for those of us who grew up on pond hockey and road hockey where the biggest arguments were over who got to "be" Keon, Howe, or Richard...and actively relive our juvenile fantasies through the NHL. He could do more surrounded by goons, on his backhand, skating backwards with the puck in the air than much older kids could do on a breakaway. He was a hero then as now. Scary good he was. Backwoodsman...You gotta do worse than that to annoy me! I have feelings about car racing and golf that make me unpopular with friends, never mind strangers, so I can empathize. O'Ree, the NHL's Director of Youth Development and ambassador for NHL Diversity, started the day by attending the Penguins' morning skate at Mellon Arena. He was joined by young players from the inner-city hockey program, "Hockey in the Hood." The youngsters made a presentation to O'Ree, who had a chance to meet Penguins forward Georges Laraque. It's nearly been 50 years since O'Ree suited up for the Boston Bruins in a game at Montreal and broke the NHL's color barrier. "Yeah, Jan. 18, 2008, is going to mark 50 years. It seems like just yesterday when I stepped on the ice at the Montreal Forum," he said. "There are so many good memories over the years. I can imagine when they celebrate my 50th, it's going to be quite a milestone for me." Now, O'Ree spends his time giving back to the sport he loves dearly. "I was appointed the director of the diversity program on my 40th anniversary by Commissioner Bettman," he said. "I have been traveling around Canada and the United States working with our 39 nonprofit programs. Basically, I just do clinics, personal appearances, fundraisers – I am just having a great time. The youth development program in this country is the greatest. I am happy that I am in a position to give back to the community and give back to the sport." Following his morning stop at Mellon Arena, O'Ree conducted a street hockey clinic at the Ammon Recreation Center on Bedford Avenue in the Hill District. Then, he attended the Hockey in the Hood practice at the RMU Island [Robert Morris U, I believe ~SH~] Sports Center on Neville Island. "It was nice to be on the ice with the Hockey in the Hood kids," he said. "It was nice to just go out there and get on the ice with them and see what their goals are and talk about how they are doing in school and what they want to do when they grow up." O'Ree was scheduled to attend the Penguins' game against the New York Rangers Saturday night at Mellon Arena, too. "I am really excited about seeing Georges play and Sidney," he said. "I am really excited about being here and watching him perform." And, O'Ree was happy to visit with Penguins Senior Advisor/Hockey Operations Eddie Johnston. The two were teammates with the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens during the 1960-61 season. "We go back to 1961. He's a great guy," O'Ree said. "He's a super guy to be with and I always enjoy being in his company. I am glad he is with the Penguins organization and doing well." O'Ree played 45 games with the Bruins from 1958-61, registering four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. He played pro hockey for 21 seasons, most of those with the Los Angeles Blades and San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League. The NHL is commemorating the 50th anniversary of O'Ree's debut throughout the 2007-08 season. Despite all the recognition, O'Ree just likes helping kids play hockey. "There are more kids today playing hockey than ever before and more girls playing hockey today than ever before. There are more rinks being constructed, too," he said. "This gives the opportunities for these kids to get on the ice. I can honestly say, of all the clinics I have been involved with, once I get these boys and girls on the ice, I just tell them I am out here to have fun. If they don't want to have fun and play, the door is open and they can leave. I have never had one kid leave, so that's a positive thing right there. Culturally speaking, hockey in North America has historically drawn a lot of players from the White and the Native American populations...not many from Black or Asian or Hispanic populations. Why? Because it started up in the White and Native American milieu, that's why, and the past tends to repeat itself. Kids tend to emulate the heroes from their own cultural community. Thus a Black kid is much more likely to emulate a Black football player, basketball player, boxer, or baseball player than he is a Black hockey player, because very few professional hockey players have been Black in the past. That is slowly changing in places like Toronto where you now see kids of every race and culture going into hockey. Likewise, a Hispanic child is more likely to emulate a Hispanic baseball or soccer player than a hockey player. I'm sure that's gradually changing too. The most popular team sports in Cuba are baseball and soccer. Cubans are downright crazy about baseball. Accordingly, you will see a lot of good Cuban baseball players. It's a cultural thing the way different communities gravitate to different sports, and it happens quite naturally, as a result of past cultural patterns...and the climate in any given area. The strongest hockey playing nations are naturally those with a northern climate. Those nations have also mostly been predominantly White nations in Europe and North America. |

Art Thieme I could be mistaken, but I think the first "Million Dollar" athlete was Pele(of soccer fame). At the beginning of the 1971-72 season, Bobby Orr signed a contract with the Boston Bruins worth a reported $200,000 per season over five years. So he made a million dollars, but spread over five years. Derek Sanderson and Bobby Hull are widely remembered as hockey's first millionaires because of the sensation they caused in 1972, when they left the NHL to sign big contracts with the new World Hockey Association. Sanderson was only a millionaire on paper. His five-year, $2.65 million deal with the Philadelphia Blazers briefly made him the world's richest athlete. But he played only a few WHA games before returning to the NHL, so he never collected his millions. Hull's WHA contract was worth $2.75 million over ten years, with $1 million of that paid up front. So Hull qualifies as the first guy to make $1 million in a single year. No NHL salary came close to $1 million a year back then. |

It's getting worse and I haven't hit bottom-- as evidence I cite the game I plan to stream to scout a team MY team will play on TV a few days later. First time I'll do that, but I suspect a definite trend beginning! Of course, I don't want an intervention. Hardi's my co-dependent in this, as well as my recliner partner, and even our dog is addicted for the complete dysfunctional family! House chores, bah!-- only as they fit into the intermissions! Even though they have been winning during the season for the past number of years with great records I'm constantly teased by my friends how they don't do much come playoffs. Here is my response to them. During the long season I go to bed and sleep really good because the Wings have won. If they don't get the Stanly Cup I'm still further ahead because I have had a great season with many fine games that I have listen to and watched. So if they don't get the cup I don't feel that bad. When Ned Harkness came in the picture and destroyed the team I was heart broken but never tossed in the towel. Here is a pasted clip. Ned Harkness (born September 19, 1921 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) was a successful NCAA head coach of ice hockey and lacrosse at Cornell University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and of ice hockey at Union College. Harkness was also head coach of the Detroit Red Wings and later was the team's general manager. He was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 1993, the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2001 and into the RPI Hockey Ring of Honor in 2007. Great credentials but.......Ah let it be I guess. Still, he destroyed the team. |

So he's just being himself, and the press super-hypes his "maturity" along with everything else they hype about him. He still lives at Mario Lemieux's house, so I think he has all the support that could be possible. He loves to play with Mario's kids, for example. But he hasn't lived at home since I dunno when-- HS I know was a billeted hockey experience. So I think he's probably really doing fine with the pressure and has pressure-release valves with the Lemieux family. His own dad was a hockey man as well, so it's all good. ~S~ |

I was against them as it was slowing down the game. Well I'm glad I didn't make any bets as I would be eating my hat now. The game in my humble opinion have improved tremendously. The players have adapted and the play has gotten must faster and the stars can do a lot more showing their skills by not being grabbed as much. I'm getting a definite second interest in it. I really don't think about their salaries as they play their game. It is only when someone bring it up that I am reminded. "Go Wings Go" |

Trash and debris were everywhere, especially on the second and third floors where the stench of beer and rotting food was almost overpowering. Bar stools were smashed through doors, and virtually every piece of glass in the building had been shattered, the broken shards unavoidable underfoot. ''They were on a drunken rampage,'' said Greg Moran, a building inspector with the city Department of Development, who was called to the scene once police learned of the destruction. ''I was absolutely appalled. ... Some of this stuff is probably irreplaceable.'' For police, the first sign of trouble was a chair that had been thrown through the storefront window facing Washington Street. When police arrived to investigate, they found the place a wreck and more than a dozen people — players as well as their friends — passed out drunk throughout the building. ''We were called here early this morning at about 7:30 after we received a report that a chair had been thrown through the window,'' said Lt. Todd Isaacson of the Jamestown Police Department. ''The unit on scene initially observed a significant amount of criminal mischief as they entered the building. ... After the officers arrive at the scene, they realized that numerous players were involved and additional assistance was needed.'' Police removed the individuals from the building after they had been identified. Isaacson and other officials with the Jamestown Police Department spoke to reporters in the ballroom on the third floor of the century-old, four-story building. The ballroom was littered with junk and paint had actually been thrown about the space, but luckily, the intricate woodwork that decorates the hall remained intact. ''To see the condition of this building was more than disappointing,'' said Det. Art Osterdahl, who has been a member of the Order of Vikings for more than two decades. ''When I was downstairs, seeing some of the rooms the children used to play in, it really hit close to home.'' Mid-Atlantic Hockey League officials announced Wednesday that they would be cancelling the rest of the season to re-organize and start fresh in 2008-09, though many of those associated with the league believe that is unlikely to happen. Ticket sales were reportedly extremely low for three of the new league's five teams — though they were reportedly much more competitive for the Valley Forge Freedom from Oaks, Pa. and the Jamestown Vikings. But across the board, the league has reportedly been buried underneath a growing pile of debt with thousands of dollars owed to players. That has resulted in hostile relations between players and league officials like Andrew Haines, league president and Vikings owner. Many believe the hostile relationship was what drove the players to trash the Vikings Lodge late Wednesday, though officials with the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena said they made it clear to them that Haines did not own the building. ''It has historic significance to everyone,'' said Michael Ferguson, ice arena general manager. ''I said this building had been there for generations in the community, and one of the excuses I got from one of the players was, 'Well, we didn't believe that. We thought it was Andrew's.' '' But Ferguson said he didn't believe that excuse, since he had told players repeatedly that Haines didn't own the building. The building is actually owned by a Florida resident who acquired it when it was auctioned by the Order of Vikings in recent years. In the early 20th century, the building was home to the Eagles Temple, and then to the Jamestown Business College. It wasn't until 1941 that it was sold to the Order of Vikings. The owner is reportedly en route to Jamestown to inspect the damage. Ferguson was saddened to learn of the season's sudden cancellation and offered the arena's help to the players in the wake of the announcement — though he was not prepared to get the call early Thursday and learn what some of the players had done. ''I'm ashamed, and it broke my heart when I walked in this morning,'' Ferguson said. ''When we addressed the team yesterday when they had been abandoned by the league, we were trying everything we could to support them.'' But not all the players were involved, according to Ferguson. ''To tell you the truth, a good portion of the team had already left town. A lot of the players already knew they weren't going to get money out of the league and had already packed up,'' Ferguson said. For Zach Kane, a Jamestown native who played as a defenseman with the Vikings, that's the worst of it — the fact that the wreckage of the Vikings Lodge has hurt the reputation of the entire team, even those who weren't involved with the incident. ''They more or less disgraced themselves and the team,'' said Kane, who had a handful of players who wanted no part in the mayhem over at his family's house that night. ''The players were fed up from the beginning. ... But still, what happened last night had no reason for happening.'' Police say they will work with the Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office and pursue charges against those involved with the incident. Most importantly, according to Isaacson, they hope to ensure the building is restored to the condition it was in before the players relocated there. ''Obviously, the goal here for everyone in the community is to get this up to the way it was,'' said Isaacson, who conservatively estimated the damage to be at least $25,000 and described the act as ''egregious'' and ''intolerable.'' Though many of the players have left town, Isaacson said police will be able to make contact with them if need be. He also said it is possible that some of those responsible may end up serving jail time. Christenson, well... I like a guy who will hit as needed, so what can I say. Great potential, but not worth keeping on the roster/salary cap for shootouts, and our goalies have lots of knowledge about his shootouts. And there are no shootouts in the playoffs. Who we got? Of course I see the potential with Hossa and Gill. Dupuis I have never really noticed. But as Hardi and I processed the news while catching parts of last night's game, and as we headed up to bed, for us it all came down to one question: "Does tonight's videotape count as a "classic" to preserve (either as-is or in DVD format)?" And we both instinctively came to the same conclusion-- that it's worth keeping until the Cup is decided, and THEN we'll know if it's a keeper and, if so, in what format! :~) It was a new tape, so I'll do like I did with Sid's Gordie Howe hat trick, and with New-Arena Madness, and add the rest of Hossa-mania to it over the next few days. ??? But right now I'm thinking of Petr Sykora's twinkling eyes as he said last night that he was looking forward to seeing Hossa "play with Sid." Sykora ALSO was bought to play with Sid, but is doing best with Malkin (they played together in Russia). I think he was articulating our thought-- that playing with Sid is a tricky business, and there are no guarantees. One episode (I was waiting for my better half to come home from work late one night) had the girls doing a roller derby, while pushing a stroller with one of those babydolls in it that records how well you take care of it-- with REAL roller derby queens chasing them and out to schmear the "baby." There was no hockey on that night-- can you imagine????-- but the roller altercations were hilarious! Pirate bedtime stories also resonate a lot like hockey. :~) Go hockey! ~Susan |
