Subject: RE: folk radio - Colum Sands From: alanabit Date: 17 Jun 08 - 04:52 PM I met this charming, cheerful man at a session in a flat at Merheim, Köln, back in 1979. He is one of the best folk fiddlers I have ever heard and he sounded good whatever he was singing or playing. Another vote for a fine musician and a fine man. |

Subject: RE: folk radio - Colum Sands From: billybob Date: 19 Jun 08 - 07:40 AM Colum played at the Walton on Naze Festival a few years ago.He is a delightful person, he did a masterclass on song writing and it was fasinating to hear how a song comes into his mind.I remember one in particular" The last house on our street" He was on the way to the radio studio and a little girl was bouncing a ball on a wall, in a row of boarded up houses except one! The rythem of the ball became the beat of the song and he had the words by the time he arrived at the studio. Colum has published a beautiful book with lovely illustrations of many of his songs, including how and where he wrote each one. We have tuned into his programme on BBC Ulster on sky, well worth a listen. Wendy |

Subject: RE: folk radio - Colum Sands From: GUEST,Jim Bainbridge Date: 17 Jul 23 - 03:49 PM Colum's 'Whatever you say'song is appropriate in many situations. About 15 years ago I went to the island of Sark, CI to play music as part of the launch of a CD Of Sark traditional music, put together by Ken Lees, my late brother-in-law-it's an amazing and valuable collection, still available on the island. After a day or two, we realised that this idyllic place had changed a lot since our last visit. Its people were being terrorised and bullied by the vicious agents of a couple of thugs called the Barclay Brothers, owners of the Daily Telegraph, the Ritz Hotel, Yodel & various other parts of the criminal enterprise known as the British economy. Colum's fine song found a ready audience among people in real fear of the Barclay thugs. |
