Does he take longer to rest than it did to get tired? Is his memeory shorter and his complaining longer? Does he even recall when his wild oats turned to prunes and all bran? Is he complaining that every thing that works hurts and that everthing that doesn't hurt doesn't work? If this is all so then I can let you have a book 'Nursing of Older people@ if you like. Just joking Jon but how old? Have a very good birthday. Allan |

Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Leadfingers Date: 29 Jun 08 - 11:44 AM Just back from Darkest Cornwall - They rest of the crew were heading for Gardens of Heligan for a Picnic , which I chickened ouy of to try and avoid the traffic coming back to London . Poor Jon was thinking there would be a 'quiet' sing in the pub with half a dozen friends -- There were twenty seven of us , so his poor unsuspecting Flabber was well gasted - Then even more turned up on Saturday for a sing in The Cobweb at Boscastle ! Lovely afternoon for the Cream Tea Workshop , then another bash with the house FULL of Folkies ! I'll leave Cats to list all the Catters though i THINK there were about twenty in the throng !! A Vote Of Thanks to Kathy for organising a superb weekend for Jon !! |

Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Dame Pattie Smith EPNS Date: 29 Jun 08 - 07:15 PM What a brilliant weekend!!! Diolch ever so much Cats for putting it all on for Jon. He was absolutely gobsmacked! We enjoyed ever so much camping on your lawn, singing Ned's 'version' of Old Soldiers, reminding Jon of the Ham car park in Sidmouth all those years ago when he wired me up in a baby doll nighty...and of course the helicopter (hofrenydd). The picnic at Heligan was fantastic today, the sun shone and it was lovely to be with loads of friends. It doesn't take much to please me. Penblwydd Hapus Jon oddiwrth Dame Pattie Smith EPNS LED! (new initials) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Hawker Date: 29 Jun 08 - 07:55 PM Though we only made it to Saturday night, we really enjoyed meeting up with all our friends - and putting faces to yet more catters names! And of course, sharing our humble abode with Sussex Carole & Crane Driver, and Bude Folk Club BBQ this evening with Snuffy & Selchie, Lovely do Kathy! Great food & company - Johns Gob was well and truly smacked! Cheers Lucy |
Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Splott Man Date: 30 Jun 08 - 04:00 AM Here it is then: You Old Sod, Yer – Ned Clamp with no apologies to Jon Heslop He came at first from Deutschland, then Southampton, then south Wales, That tiny little baby born to play. As he grew he found his voice, moved to Cornwall, then, by choice, That young man who's much older now today. Ch: You old sod, yer, still drinking in the bars, Will knock back the tankards, mugs, and jars. With your pipe and a song, you know we'll sing along, You old sod, yer, you'll never fade away. He's fond of Captain Morgan's, and of Wood's and Lamb's as well, Fine wines and food, real chocolate, no contest! Doing housework without whining, God, he even does the ironing. But playing with his train set is the best. No fags, cigars or stogies, just his favourite old pipe, Because up with that stuff he will not put. Cherry baccy scented breezes create no coughs or wheezes, Only the occasional fall of soot. When in Wales, the mines were striking, he wrote so many songs, If we'd had one then, he'd've sent them to the Senedd. When some Cymraeg now he sought, the phrase that he was taught: Dwy'n hoffi mynd I clwb gwerin mewn hofrennydd. Now his friends and his family are gathered in this place, To celebrate their withered old mate. Out of pride and our respect, we'll sing with heads erect To that hero of 1948. PS: This is the original - Old Soldiers is the parody - ask Jon! |
Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Mick Tems Date: 30 Jun 08 - 05:33 AM Just got back from wonderful Rillaton in beautiful Kernow, negociating the maze of extremely narrow lanes to wish Jon Penblwydd Chwechfed Hapus. The Tribute ale at The Cobweb in breathtaking Boscastle was spot on! We all trooped back to Jon and Kathy's for a gorgeous cream tea, and then it was party time with a cottageful of happy folkies. One of the highlights was the tasty buffet (including huge legs of beef and ham and an amazing plethora of cheeses.) Any good party ought to have a session, but at Jon's birthday party there were TWO song sessions vying with each other! I know that Terry has said it before, but Jon's gob was well and truly smacked. A big Diolch O'r Galon goes to Kathy, who not only organised events very efficiently for Jon's 60th but kept the surprise a big secret. And my B&B at Lynher Farm, just outside Bathpool, was something else, too - welcoming and friendly landlady, comfortable and spacious room with a double bed, lovely scenery all the way around and an eye-popping big breakfast. Mmmmmmm.... |

Jack took a few days off and NOW THAT I'M RETIRED (you must all be getting sick of my saying that!) I didn't have to rush back. Thanks to Kathy for organising such a brilliant weekend. It's a good job Jon doesn't have a heart problem - we could have finished him off with all the surprises. I'm sure we're all going to enjoy listening to the 'special CD' (various artists singing Jon's songs, limited edition of 60 - one for each year) and it will bring us happy memories of a wonderful weekend for years to come. 1948 was obviously a vintage year - Jon and myself both reaching 60 within days of each other! Dinner & Sing in the pub on Friday, Saturday's session & sightseeing in Boscastle with friends who just happened to be in Boscastle 'by chance' (yeh right), cream tea on the lawn followed by a party with, as Mick says not just one sing but TWO!...and the cheeses and the meats..... A brilliant weekend and such a shame that we couldn't stay to enjoy the champagne picnic on Sunday afternoon. A big thank you to Lucy & Kevin for putting up with us. (We renamed it "The Boscastle Crumble") On Sunday we found the Lost Gardens of Heligan for the jolly fine picnic. I don't reckon they were lost at all, just waiting for SatNav to be invented. All in all a weekend surrounded by our chosen family. Well done and thanks to Kath. Good luck and health to Jon. Andy and Jillie |
Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Splott Man Date: 01 Jul 08 - 06:23 AM We were the last hooligans in the gardens. The Dame & I got geographically challenged twice on the way there. We found ourselves on a road that wasn't even on our map at one point. What a great weekend! |

All that with plenty of singing & playing plus catching up with old friends. Thanks also to Lucy & Kevin for making Vaughan & I so welcome at their Bude Folk Club Barbeque on Sunday evening where we met even more nice people. Subject: RE: BS: Jon Heslop is 60 From: Snuffy Date: 03 Jul 08 - 05:14 PM An absolutely enthralling weekend: whenever we thought it couldn't possibly get better ... it did! It was great to be able to show Jon how much we appreciate him and what he has achieved. And a huge vote of thanks to Kathy, not only for all her weeks of scheming and hours of preparation, but especially for her skill and cunning in keeping the old Sod(yer) so thoroughly in the dark right up to the very last moment. Here's to both of you. |
