Wasn't Gordon Haskell effectively shafted in the race for Christmas #1 by the machine behind Robbie Williams ?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the BBC top knobs were told by Robbie's management that if Haskell was allowed to appear live on Top of The Pops singing 'Harry's Bar' then Robbie may be withdrawn from future appearances on the BBC.

Guess who didn't appear on TOTPs? And guess who got the number one?

He is still very much alive, writing new songs and working on a new project somewhere in Greece. Last gig I heard of was at Katerini in Greece during their Arts festival this Oct (2009). Reported to have been fantastic - the Greek audience loved him even if they couldn't understand all his lyrics. He also did a summer gig on Skopelos Island with Robbie Macintosh and Marek Podowa. About 5 years ago ,when I lived in Christchurch,Dorset, he often did solo gigs in a pub called "The Thomas Tripp", and very good he was too------then he had a single,"Harry's Bar" ,made loads of money (presumably) and I guess didn't need pub gigs any more !!

I was sitting in with a band in Weymouth one night about three years ago and he walked in the pub. he had this stunningly gorgeous woman with him. By the time the set ended they'd gone - but they stayed for a few numbers.

Odd coincidence. I was looking at an old Atlantic label LP this afternoon that was released in the early 70's - it's a sampler, that originally cost 99p, showcasing artists on the label at that time, like John Prine, Dr John, Buffalo Springfield. It contains a track by Gordon Haskell.
