I did a cut and paste from word and a whole chunk got left out. Most didn't matter too much but there is no way I'd leave the post without mentioning our trip to see Theresa in her new home on our way back from Scarborough. It's been so long since we've met up and our trips to USA where the infamous bum pinching took place. We all shared lots of memories and hugs - it was wonderful to meet up again. |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Barry Finn Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:12 PM Geezze Carole, it's Ken & I who are deeply indebted to you & Andrew for you two being our guardian angels guides & comfortors. We were by all means & manners "under your wings" & we are both forever grateful. It's just to bad that Ken due to his teaching commitments couldn't have stayed on longer. Thanks for taking those pictures & thanks & posting them, I'm back in the UK already, just as if I hadn't left. You were much kinder in exposing our poses. In some pictures that were taken it's evedent that we put effort & emotion into what we do even if it looks as if we're constipated in our constraints, you were kind to wait till we passed. We all hope to be back over soon LOL Barry |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: SussexCarole Date: 26 Aug 09 - 04:05 PM At last - time to reflect on our time with Barry & Ken and upload a few of the 100s of photos I took. What a wonderful time! We met up with Barry & Ken at Scarborough Seafest and shared some wonderful singing there. Barry & Ken's performances were superb. What a great impromptu survivors session in the Leeds Arms on Sunday night. We left Scarborough for our trip to the Pontcysllte aquaduct on Monday and then said goodbye to Ken at Manchester Airport. After our trip back to Wales on Tuesday Barry was interviewed on local radio (Radio Tircoed) by John Carpenter and later that evening we had arranged an informal sing at The Greyhound - one of our local pubs. Surprises galore met us all when we reached the door - we were greeted by Jerry Epstein, Ralph Boddington, Tony & Mike of Mainbrace, Roy Harris and so many other local and not quite so local singers - it was a really fantastic evening. This was followed by another wonderful evening at Llantrissant club on Saturday night where Barry had the pleasure of buying a raffle ticket "in the dark with fish & chips" and then back to chez Dame Pattie for an after hours soiree. Naturally we took Barry to see the sights and delights of Gower and Swansea and had the necessary picture taken at the top of Rhossili. Bull Bay Festival, Anglesey was our next destination via a journey through Snowdonia - very scenic but would have been even more so if I hadn't made a map reading detour. I spent hours on dolphin watch at Bull Bay and didn't see one. Great 'fun' putting up our tents in gale force winds - all too soon it was time for us to say farewell to Barry at Bangor station and journey home - back through Snowdonia on the proper road! Thank you Barry & Ken - we had a great time with you - it was great to see you this side of the pond for a change! Hope to see you both (& Neil) again soon. Carole & Andrew |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: TRUBRIT Date: 07 Aug 09 - 10:00 PM I think the 'lubrication' is a huge difference between UK an USA. When Brian Peters did his house concert recently at my house, I offered him a drink around 5.30 pm -- he looked at me sideways and I clarified that I meant a beer or some such. He said -- well you never know in America........acceptance of alcohol in social events is a huge cultural difference (not that I am saying being drunk is ok - it is just so much more acceptable to drink over there....) |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Barry Finn Date: 07 Aug 09 - 12:28 PM Thanks Pete, we will. Here we had folk come up through the "Coffeehouse" scene, where you had it come up through the "Pubs". Even though I'm not a drinker, I like the way you guys do things. Our Irish music sessions are alot closer to yours but we hardly have a Pub singing scene like yours. There is one in Boston that just started up on a monthly basis but it's not as casual as yours & then there's the Press Room but that's a one off on it's own. You guys should come over here more often & give us an idea as to how we show do it. That's an invite. Great to hear from you Barry |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: stallion Date: 07 Aug 09 - 03:14 AM mmmmm Uk style folk clubs in the US. Firstly you have to be a bit more relaxed about the "lubrication", that is quite a cultural difference, the lubrication releases inhibitions and gets people joining in...that is difficult i know because of what,to us, are vast distances to travel. Our sessions and singing clubs do not concentrate on the scholarship but the fun elements, one might enquire as to where a tune or a song came from but for the majority they come for a good time. So make it fun, enjoy and don't be afraid to ask if you can have a regular night in a bar (and don't expect to be paid!) it's a start! Alternatively come to the UK en-masse and lets have a b. good party! Pete |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Maryrrf Date: 06 Aug 09 - 09:14 PM Hey Barry I've been following your travels on this thread and just imagining how well what you do would be appreciated in the UK. I knew you and Ken would be a hit, and you were! I second your wish that we could somehow make UK style folk club popular here in the US. We don't seem to have anything that would be an equivalent, and more's the pity. |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Aug 09 - 08:49 PM I'm home & rested up. The Market Tavern in Sandbach was a real treat. Winston, who runs the club is another one of those gems who host with a knack (like Dame Patty) that makes everyone feel special & keep a flow of feeling that makes some venues stand way above the rest. Well my trip is at a close & it's still a bit of a blur but I have to thank my gracious host Peter for he first & shortest leg & Carole & Andrew for longest leg & all of whom without I can truthfully say I would've been legless without. Thanks to all who've posted & to those who gave me guidence as to where I might go to hear music you were a real help with the ending of my trip helping me to decided what clubs I went to, I was tickled with each place I ended up at. I finally got to see & hear what all the hype about the UK folk club scene was all about, beyond what I expected & more delightful than I imagined. I must sayI didn't seek or ask to be a floor singer at any club but at every club, except one that was a singer's night sing around, I was asked to do a few & sometimes more. Some clubs did blues & American & some English (Thanks Patty or the Welsh), all in all they were all wonderful. I would only wish that we here in the States would copy their style for our club venues. Micca, it was good to blow in your ear again, though not as softly as it should've been & not as loudly as I would've liked. Next time you can talk us through customs though Peter must've been spot on, as Ken did finally get through, after a call to Richard Grainger, thanks Richard. See you for the Getaway, I got the bottom bunk Banjiman, who are these folks that want us, are they daft? Great cuz them's are our kind of folk. PM me & let me know what & who I have to do. I'll talk to Ken about his schedule but August-September is a good time Hillary, it was nice to meet up with you you're gonna love the Getaway & Portsmouth, right up your alley, I'm excited about your arrival. Thanks to Paul (hopefully you'll look in at mudcat & see this) in Sandbach for your hosting me on my last night & getting me to the airport the scenic way, it was a pleasure to chat with you about the older days Love to all Barry |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Aug 09 - 09:35 PM I wonder if there is a song we can come up with which would be a faithful rendering of Barry's experience in the UK? Maybe we can work up a parody of "The Rake and Rambling Boy" or "The Handsome Cabinboy." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Barry Finn Date: 04 Aug 09 - 11:41 AM I'm now in Sandbach at the library where I just bumped into Paul from the Bull Bay fest. We're going over to the Market Tavern later for the session. I found out about the Market session through Paul & others & he offered to put me up & drive me to the airport in the am if I ever made it here. Been all through Sandbach's historical landmarks, beatuiful old buildings but that's par fopr the course isn't it. Yes, Charlie, I still have a passport, I'll be needing it to get home ya know. Dame Patty Smith, thanks for hostin me while at Llantrisant. What a wonderful club you've got & you're a wonder at handleing it, it was absoultly brilliant & thanks for the invite to the after party & bunk, Micca was his pleasnt & honorable self will on the botton, I was not at any time if fear. If I'm back (I hope to be next yr) I'd love to guest at your club, it would be the highlight of my visit. Will stay in touch Thanks I'm getting cut off again, will be as time allows Barry- |

Thank goodness I haven't got a gig tonight! Barry next time you come to Britain please let me know, it would be good to have you guesting at Llantrisant, and you can have the bottom bunk next time.........X Pat |

Llantrisant is a superb, welcoming club & the guests were fantastic, a thoroughly good evening was had by all. Lovely to see Carole & Andrew again, though I didn't get to hear them sing. Really looking forward to hearing Barry on top form at Portsmouth, though I must be careful to stand well back, not right next to him as Micca was *grin* Barry, have a fab time at Bull Bay & wave at my cousin in Menai Bridge when you cross over to the island. Safe journeys & see you in September, will PM stuff before then! |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Barry Finn Date: 30 Jul 09 - 07:58 PM We've just finished packing for the Bull Bay fest & will head out in the morning. My voice is starting to recover, here comes another weekend, physic'ed!. I can't believe I traveled 3000 miles to hear Jerry Epstein & Ralph Bodington 2 nights in a row, it was worth it. This time at the Llantrisant Folk Club, what a night & what a packed house. As an aside Jerry announceded that Roy Harris will be recieving a life time award at the Eisteddfod in New York. The floor singers weer all great & I'll have to say that the energy & good will put out by Pat "Ms Spoons" is enough to make the place bust with smiles, thanks to you & your hubby, Splott Man for all your warm welcomes & offers. Had the great pleasure of meeting up with other mudcatters, Mick Tams, Jude, Hillary (see you for Portsmouth) & I'm leaving out some again, sorry, my brain is only small. What a great group of folks down here in Wales. Micca had the bottom bunk & that's all I'm gonna say at the moment except that I probably woke him up as much as he woke up me. I'll be heading up to Angelsey in the morning with Carole & Andrew to have our fill of another weekend packed with music Charley, we did get to Rhossili & the Worm's Head off Gower, fantastic seaside scenery. Carole & Andrew, had me tripping to Swansea too. We finished off the day with some "salt marsh lamb", yum. Neil, my voice is on the way back but I don't know for how long with another weekend coming up, we'll see. The only thing you showed me was how to flap my lips & gums while humming & trying to get me to shake my head from side to side as I said "Ahhhhh,Eeeee,Iiiii,Ohhh" so's you could have a belly laugh at my expense Ken, be careful I think he likes you & he's taken a shine to you. It was a great time singing & traveling with you, yes, we'll have to do more of it, soon. Glad you mentioned Ken & Jan Lardner, I really enjoyed their company & conversations, great folks Moorley Man, if you see this, I forgot to say it was a treat to finally meet you, thanks for dropping bye, hope we'll meet soon, again. Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: haddocker Date: 30 Jul 09 - 11:06 AM Ken, First of all, Congratulations on the success of your England tour with my little friend. I knew it was going to be great. I can't believe you didn;'t go to "Stonehenge". If I had gone, that would have been a major objective. I suppose it wasn't geographically feasible. When Barry first suggested that you take my place on the tour, I responded with "Mein Schatzy? Absolutely! He's PERFECT!" When we sang at NEFFA, the spontaneity that we were able to produce in that performance was astounding. I can only imagine what we could come up with over time with practice. Barry has suggested to me that we keep it going; the three of us; sort of "Finn n' Haddie with a Side of Filet Mignon"; Surf n' Turf, as it were.Personally, I would be delighted if you would consider it. I see boundless potential here. Plus, I would have a playmate with whom to devise schemes for driving Barry NUTS! Seriously, we have been trying to find the right third person to fill out our sound. I believe you are he. I greatly look forward to singing with you again.Besides, the UK know you and Barry as "Finn n' Haddie". Therefore, I cannot replace you, I can only try to add to the mix. Most sincerely, Neil |
Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: haddocker Date: 30 Jul 09 - 10:41 AM Not having heard anything from the Finn Home Office, I thought perhaps mon petit frere had taken up with a rich bird from the royal family named "Delia" and was not coming back. It is so good to have this site where I can get the firsthand news from those in the know, as it were. It was great to read the positive reviews ( which were no surprise, knowing my worthy comrades). Ken better become a permanent partner if we return next year, because they will be expecting that unique sound that only he can give. Personally, the idea of Ken being with us makes me giddy with anticipation; the energy;the harmonic possibilities;the creative potential. We worked together in a "Prison Song" workshop at NEFFA, and it was fantastic to the point of incredibility, particularly since it was "spur of the moment". Of course, prison song singers come together like members of different Catholic Choirs. They all have the same or similar hymns in their repertoire and when the hymnals are handed out it all comes together as church, or in this case, prison. Baruch, in case you get to read this, I told you in the past that you needed to watch your voice and taught you many techniques and warm-ups to preserve it, especially when it is challenged by long or repaeated performances. Did you forget this training? O.K., since you have already succumbed to injury, let me simply suggest the tea with honey route, and if the glucose spike is too much for you, just gargle with it. It's all about the warmth and the coating of the throat. Beyond that, GREAT JOB! And I most fervently pray for your continued success in the Mother Country. Blessings, Nahum |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Ken Schatz Date: 29 Jul 09 - 11:00 PM Home again, jiggety-jig! Wow, thank you everybody for the very kind words! I wish I could have continued on with Barry to Bull Bay and Beyond, but alas, I had to come back to work. Scarborough was really a treat - the people couldn't have been nicer, and it was fantastic to meet and reconnect with a host of excellent singers and friends. Particular thanks to Peter and his wonderful family, and Carole and Andrew for taking such great care of us. Two highlights for me: the York City Walls and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - whew! Super singers and performers are Carole and Andrew, too. Thank you also very much especially to Two Black Sheep and a Stallion, everyone at the Black Swan Folk Club, Paul and Wendy (new CD!) and all of Blind Summat!, to Richard and Jeanette Grainger, Helen Pitt and Steve Dawes, Les Pirates (woo!), Hughie Jones, Dick Miles (nice work with the hens, especially), and to Ken and Jan Lardner at The Chantey Cabin. Thank you all a lot for your support - it was a real treat to meet and sing with all of you, and yes, let's do more! DebC, great to sing and catch up with you, and thank you! Expect a call... Jacqui, a pleasure as always, and Micca, great to see you, even briefly! Thanks more to all who joined in singing on the pier after the fireworks on Saturday and to all who took over the Leeds Arms on Sunday night. That's the stuff, right there. And a big thank you to Barry. It is a real privilege to learn from and sing with you, boss. More, please!* Thanks and best wishes to Neil, too. Travel safe, represent, and say hi to Mainbrace, Mike, Roy and Tony! (Hope nobody minds, I think I'll post this in the Scarborough Seafest thread too.) *Finn and Haddie are going to be at the Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Folk Festival in September. Everybody mark your calendars! Cheers, Ken |

Subject: RE: Ken Schatz & Barry Finn to tour UK 24/7- From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jul 09 - 08:26 AM Ah, the warning was on July 24 in the Scarboro Seafest thread: "And do make some effort to pace yourselves so you don't totally blow your vocal chords in your next set, and then have to endure the "sympathy" of all your fine new friends, and supporters back here in the States." Obviously the warning was too late! Charley Noble |
