Subject: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Janie Date: 24 Oct 09 - 02:07 PM I posted the following to the Fatham This thread re: Barry Finn's CD, and a couple of people thought it might be a good idea, so I am moving the suggestion to it's own thread to call attention to it and see what people think. ....I am betting that many people have videos or recordings of Barry singing, hopefully going back a long ways. While the quality of many of these may not be "the finest kind", as much of the music and singing of this wonderfully talented man ought to be documented and preserved as completely as possible. I wonder, for now, about a thread to which people post if they have indeed recorded Barry - in a living room, at the Getaway, a family picnic, a festival, etc. It could serve as a locator archive in the event Justine and family might decide, at some point, to authorize the replicating of these recordings all in one place. This might be a really dumb idea, but I thought I would toss it out there. It would basically be a collection of field recordings. We all know what a wonderful resource field recordings are. Janie |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: VirginiaTam Date: 24 Oct 09 - 02:15 PM Janie The best thing would be to create a youtube account dedicated to Barry Finn recordings. Or maybe some other site that would host photos, videos and mp3s and visitor forum? |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Janie Date: 24 Oct 09 - 02:26 PM V.T., I wasn't thinking so much about people putting recordings on-line, though that would be nice. I was thinking that at some point in the future, Justine might to authorize or create a more or less permanent archive, that lots of people have probably recorded Barry over the years (dig into that box of cassette tapes from all those jams, folks), that a lot of those folks visit Mudcat, and could post to a designated thread here that they have a recording they would be willing to make available to such a project. The purpose of the thread would be to identify and locate recordings. (My run-on sentences astonish even me, sometimes.) Janie |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Severn Date: 24 Oct 09 - 02:34 PM I let a recorder run in some workshops and sings. I haven't sorted through it all yet but if someone PMs me interest, I'll gladly tell you what I find and share it, if desired. We'll see how "field" they are. A new machine and still being experimented with..... |

Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Oct 09 - 03:01 PM I've got tapes (yeah, tapes) of most of the monthly Press Room shanty sings starting in February 2003 -- Barry is on most of them. Quality is up and down because of varying noise levels at The Press Room. I have most of them transcribed and with j-cards. However, I'm running behind and there are some I haven't listened to yet. (Comparatively few, some I just haven't printed j-cards for; I'll have to do a survey (the folders by year are on my other computer). Of course, that means there's a lot of Curmudgeon's voice, too. Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: open mike Date: 24 Oct 09 - 04:48 PM this would be great memories for the family (and friends) digital archives are an important asset! a good way to keep his memory and his music with us. perhaps (with permission) it could also be marketed as a fund raiser for his family. |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Genie Date: 24 Oct 09 - 07:19 PM For now, if you search YouTube for the terms "Barry Finn" and "Mudcatter," you will find several recordings of Barry. They are also at his own YT channel, "MrBarryFinn." The key term "FSGW Getaway" is also useful in finding these. I think there may be a way to download video files you find at YT, but I'm not sure how to do it. I will also put my 3 videos of Barry up at MediaFire, where people can download them, free. I will post the links here. Genie |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Janie Date: 25 Oct 09 - 12:12 AM From what I hear, Linn, those Press Room sessions are worthy of their own archive. Regarding Barry, he was a singer of real note, yet recorded only 1 CD. He had an amazing repertoire of songs that may not be recorded anywhere else. So many of us listen and have learned songs from old field recordings, but do not recognize the value of our own field recordings. So many of us have recorded songs and tunes in song circles, at parties, festivals and on porches in order to learn them. These unpolished recordings document songs, singers, and the evolution of songs, and will have real historical value. They can be a valuable resource to future generations. |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: VirginiaTam Date: 25 Oct 09 - 04:37 AM Sorry i misinterpreted your intention Janie. Still, would be great to have such an archive where all could access it. Such a phenomenal voice in song and wonderful stories about his character. I would love to hear recordings of him in conversation, cracking jokes, telling stories, giving advice, if its out there. |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: My guru always said Date: 25 Oct 09 - 04:42 AM You're so right Janie!! Richard has a huge drawerful of cassettes under the bed from sings & festivals here in the UK over the past 30 years or so and only he will be able to properly catalogue them. I just hope he finds the time! Meanwhile, as mentioned on another thread, Richard has video of at least one of Barry's (as the trio Finn & Haddie) concerts at Portsmouth Maritime Festival 2009 and also some from the FSGW Getaway 2009. When we figure out how to get it on the Net, we will. Or we'll pass it to a man (or woman) who can. Thanks for thinking of this Janie! |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: GUEST,Neil Date: 30 Jun 20 - 10:42 AM I am the ‘’Haddie” of “Finn n’ Haddie”. I have several copies of “Fathom This”. Is anyone interested? |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry... From: Ross Campbell Date: 30 Jun 20 - 06:23 PM Hi, Neil Are you the "Haddie" that was with Barry Finn in Scarborough many years ago, or was that Dan Schatz? I swapped our "Final Trawl" and Red Duster CDrs for one of Barry's CDs (and I wish I could find it now). Later on I managed to record Barry singing for me the CW-9 song which I believe you may have put the tune to (describes the fate of a misguided convoy along the south coast of England in WW2). Can be found here - https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=109942#2304944 PermaThread: Merchant Navy Songs Don't know where that recording is at the moment, I'm in the middle of trying to get to where I can find and index all our recordings over decades. I was so glad to have met Barry, his contributions to that thread were very welcome. Such a powerful singer, his death so soon after was a complete shock. Ross |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry.Finn.. From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 20 - 06:29 PM Neil, it might be good for me to have a way to help people contact you about Barry and Finn and Haddie. If you'd like, please send your contact information to me at joe@mudcat.org. I usually like to forward email requests, and don't like to give out email addresses unless I have specific permission. Thanks. By the way, I found Finnan Haddie on a restaurant menu once, and had to try it. It was delicious. Quite similar to a dish that's common in Portugal. All the best to you. Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry.Finn.. From: GUEST,Neil (Guest) Date: 01 Jul 20 - 03:29 PM Certainly, Joe, and thank you Ross. I was just trying to remember i there was any documentation regarding that song "CW-9". My e-mail address is iggybearbedo@yahoo.com. Best regards and "chantey as you go", Neil |
Subject: RE: If you have Field Recordings of Barry.Finn.. From: Ross Campbell Date: 02 Jul 20 - 11:49 AM It was Ken Schatz who came over with Barry Finn to the Scarborough Seafest in 2009, and Ken knew enough of the CW-9 song to double the volume now and then. I'll have to find the old computer/hard drive that the video is on. Ross There's a discussion forum with details on CW-9. Also mentions a book by Andy Saunders - "Convoy Peewit" ISBN 9781906502676 Convoy Peewit (CW-9) discussion forum |
