Says so here.

There was a thread within the last year about the NHS "going after" the overweight, but I felt a new thread was needed to spread (yes, intended) the good news.

Chow down!

I am a great believer in doing what is best for your body... but some of us are so different to others..... encouraging people to be even a little overweight is not to my mind a good idea.
All these fantastic new statistics coming out daily are confusing to say the least for the average person and lack detail....... If I were someone of note... in the right position... I could say tomorrow.... People who have strong legs are likely to be healthier than those with weaker legs...... and I would in fact be right... people who exercise get stronger legs..... so statistics would prove me right........ Just eat a healthy diet... if you don't know what one is then find someone who does..... get plenty of good exercise...... work at being a happy person.... and Hey Presto... by magic... you could live longer.....

I don't think that article was meant to encourage most people to put on pounds. What it said was what I've been saying for years -- for the majority of people, being TOO SKINNY is unhealthy. As they've already pointed out, yo-yo dieting is unhealthy too. Being too thin is just as life and health threatening as being too fat.

That being said, I'm still trying, though not at all fanatically, to pare down to a more average weight for my frame. I don't obsess about it or what I eat and try to get as much exercise, too, as I realistically can. It's been helping that I went from a very sedentery occupation (pre-press print production / computer jockey) to optical sales/service. I'm now on my feet most of the day and have to run halfway across Sears to photocopy every Rx.

Susan Weed wrote, years ago, in her Menopausal Years-The Wise Woman Way, that as a woman ages, she should not lose too much so that there is some cushioning for her bones. She does not advocate obesity or gaining (unless one is too thin), just not too much loss.

I think I'm right in saying that a massively overweight person or an athlete will find it equally hard when it comes to getting life insurance.

And they are, after all, the people who should know.

I'm far from being skinny but I've managed to lose about 45 pounds over the last year and a half. I've never felt better. My personal goal is to live a long and happy life. And I think the weight loss will help. I've already stopped shooting up insulin every morning. And that's - as Martha would say - a good thing.

Hey Wesley!!! That's GREAT news!!! I've lost 90+ pounds in the last year and a half/two years and I'm off of all kinds of meds too, including insulin or any other type of diabetic medication! I have a ways to go myself but will say that I feel a million times better than before the weight came off. I'm not aiming to be a size 4 or anything of the kind...just smaller and increasingly more healthy!

I had a dear friend diagnosed with colon cancer, she was overweight, maybe about 250ish or so and the Dr.'s told her, "Don't you dare lose any weight." I think that's because the treatments she had to go through would make her sick and lose weight...they said that the extra weight was a good thing in her case.

The song and dance changes from fad to fad anyway.....as for me, I'm eating healthy and being as active as I can with a goal of continuing to feel good and stay healthy!

Michelle

A lot depends of course on what you eat as well.

Obesity is not healthy.

A good guy we knew, who has gone on before, was married to a good gal who is very short and on the plump side. We happened to discuss the nude in classic art a bit one time, and he promptly noted his preference for Reubens. We miss him, but I know she misses him more.

So, the study shows that slightly overweight (By whose standards?) people are less likely to die than drastically underweight or overweight people.

Nice to know that the funding is being so usefully used, eh.

Life is pretty precarious for very old people, too, but THEY are the ones that should be studied. They have a track record.

I've gained and lost about half a ton in this life. My second LP had a picture on the back that was actually 100 pounds heavier than the one on the front. I was glad when it went out of print. Now I'm not able to exercise and food is nice pleasure to indulge in. No matter that I'm heavy again. If it shortens my life, that's cool with me. Without the ability to play music now, so be it. Whatever!

In the Gateau

(And those stairs creak)
On a cold and dark November night
I creep down to the kitchen and my eyes
Catch sight of the gateau.
(And those scales don't lie)

Though I'm supposed to be losing weight
There staring at me on the plate is the gateau.

You gotta understand,
How I feel those hunger pangs
People don't you see
I can't live on lettuce and celery
Or I'm going to completely fade away.

(As my stomach churns),
Though I might get broad around the beam,
There's death by chocolate and treble cream in the gateau.
(This diet's against the rules).
Though I know my waistline's gonna pay the price
There are 3 million calories in every slice of the gateau.

I know my family doctor is the cause of all my trials
I can't live on rice cakes that taste like
Polystyrene tiles.
(And those scales don't lie.)

Though I've destroyed the evidence
I know I'm gonna feel the consequences of the gateau,
(And those scales don't lie)
As I put the empty plate back on that shelf,
I think even old Elvis himself was partial to the gateau
(And those scales don't lie)

I don't want to live on watercress
And you can't get will power on the NHS,
Gimme the gateau.
(And those scales don't lie). (Elvis is now leaving the building!)

Within your own history and/or the culture of others, you may find that having a bit of a belly is a sign of having made it in society. Not me, though - at 175cm tall, whatever I eat or do I hover around 77KG.

Overweight passengers who cannot squeeze into a single plane seat are to be charged double to fly with Air France.

People who cannot fit into a standard seat will be asked to pay for two seats, or not be allowed on board for "safety reasons", according to the airline.

Air France spokeswoman Monique Matze said: "We have to make sure that the backrest can move freely up and down and that all passengers are securely fastened with a safety belt.

"The charge will only apply on flights that are fully booked. They will get their money back on flights where spaces are available."

The airline intends to charge passengers 75% of the cost of the second seat on top of the full price for the first.

Air France was ordered to pay £5,000 damages in 2007 for "humiliation" to a 27-stone passenger at an airport check-in desk in New Delhi.

Frenchman Jean-Jacques Jauffret, 43, had his stomach measured by Air France staff before being told he needed to buy two seats.

Mr Jauffret claimed he was told: "People as fat as you need to buy two seats."

United Airlines introduced the same policy last year, making passengers with extra-wide bodies pay for an extra seat.

Air France's new charges will apply for people who book their tickets from February 1 for all flights from April 1.

Bert has a point. If two anorexic women can fit in a single seat, why should they pay for two seats?

My bone scans consistently show the bone mass of a woman in her late thirties. Doctor says that carrying around all this extra weight is keeping my bones strong. So something good has come of it. Of course, I have the heart of an 80 year old...

If two anorexic women can fit in a single seat, why should they pay for two seats?

That sounds OK as long as they both stay within the confines of that seat, share a meal between them, and their total baggage weight doesn't excede a single passenger's allowance. Unfortunately regulations require each passenger to have an individual seat belt.

If you are of average weight do you enjoy sharing half of your seat with an obese person sitting next you on a fourteen hour flight?

airlines have seat belt extenders...if the one does not fit around you

i hope i never have to ask for one of those..or use one of the motor
chairs in the stores in order to cruise the aisles to buy more food..

yikes--hoping to stay under 200 pounds...

I'm overweight but hoping to get into the 'normal' category, whatever that is! by the end of the year.

I have been working out now for a year next month. Since the twins were born 16 months ago I have lost 4 and a half stone and dropped from a uk size 22/24 to a uk size 14 and I feel great! I started watching my weight a month after they were born and got the ok to exercise 4 months after they arrived. I love to exercise in classes and I love to run, I take part in charity runs too so I am raising money for charity (mainly cancer charity) and getting fit at the same time!
