Howdy and welcome Jim Daton,
It may be interesting to you, as a student of internet technology, that all Mudcat threads from the beginning is 1996 are available to browse. The Digital Tradition database goes back to 1988 (before you were born, imagine that!) and was one of the earliest internet applications I can remember using.

And thanks for that, Phil. If anyone does not know that story:

It concerns our dog--that got it's tail caught in the car door. And the tail was chopped off -- which caused it to bleed to death.

After that the ghost of the dog began haunting our place---until, finally, I took the ghost to the liquor store. I did that, of course, because thet is where they retail spiits. (Think re-tail spirits.)

And you left a fine legacy that we get to enjoy each year. Thank you for that.

I should mention that one of your stories made an appearance at Winfield this year. I told the one about being haunted by the dog that lost his tail (properly footnoted and attributed of course) to some visiting Irish musicians who nearly fell out of their chairs.

Lin -
I see a lot of familiar looking faces in your pictures. They make me wish it was September 2010 already.

It looks like we may have been at the same Buddy Greene show. We got to see Buddy, Jeff Taylor, and Ron Block sitting in with the Greencards, too. Them boys came to play. That's one of the things I like about Winfield -- sometimes the people on the stages can play every bit as well as the people in the campgrounds.

Finally got the Winfield photos up on our Smugmug site. See them here.

Uncle Phil, I even made it to a couple of performances this year! Had too much fun drooling over Beppe and Buddy Greene and Jeff Taylor, but didn't get to pick in the campgrounds nearly as much as usual--as John said, too much racket from the proliferating stages. Hope they go back to the "acoustic only" rule for next year.

See y'all in 2010!

There were reports of a "self-destructing" string bass during a Wilders(?) act not too long ago. Similar to the description above, the neck just separated from the body and large hunks fell to the floor. They managed to finish the act with a borrowed instrument, and "promised not to break it."

Observations about a paucity of street stomps is quite accurate. The proliferation of "wildcat" private stages with amplified sound and "scheduled acts" has made it nearly impossible to play in most of the popular street areas - and in many of the camps.

The noise from the "stages" prevents people from wandering about and finding compatible players early on in the day, and hence there are no impromptu groups large enough to play together - over the blaring amped up stages - later on (when the fun used to begin).

The few who did play on the Pecan Grove streets this year were almost all groups/acts who came together and just did their acts on the street instead of on the stages. Performing pre-rehearsed acts, in place of sharing music as a community activity, is the new rule - and not one I care much for.

Oh, heck, feel free to lift any shot that you like. There's no reason to make up some silly story about John son of John having friends.

I didn't get around much this year, but street stompers seemed more scarce than usual even in the Pecan Grove. I know I didn't take pictures of any.

We did wander into Carp Camp one night before the festival proper – always an experience. That night a guy's axe self-destructed in the middle of a tune. It looked like the neck suddenly detached from the body. I'd never seen that happen before.

We've been enjoying friends' posts of pics and video from Carp Camp.

September's not a good times for festivaling for a college prof (astro), so it'll likely be a long time before we get to Winfield, but we're starting to study up to find a fest or two (probably summer and winter break) to make a habit for our new(ish) household.

Meanwhile, enjoying vicariously. Astro will have a mando lesson with Dave F. in a couple of weeks when he's in town (astro, that is) and get the report from the man himself. :-)

I'll give a second (or third) on the opinion about great pictures; but then we expect that of someone who cheats and only takes (mostly) daytime shots. I like the challenge of getting the street stomp stuff, and someday I'm gonna get a good one too.

I'll confess to "lifting" one shot for my kid. He seems to think he's found a friend and has been asking us for pictures which - unfortunately - we didn't know we were supposed to be taking. (We're pretty sure at least one of the other camp followers did get some he'll like.)

We're waiting for contributions from a couple of people who promised to send us their pictures to post, and may wait until we've got a decent web connection*; but Lin is getting anxious about getting another thousand or so shots posted on our web site. We'll remind y'all of the URL when we get something up.

* The Winfield wifi guy brought out a new repeater just for us when I called about a lost connection, and he moved it to keep it really close when we moved to get closer to water, so we have a fairly strong signal now; but the server/setup still clinks and clanks like it did during the festival. I think the signal was good enough without the repeater. It's the amateur web design that's the weak link; but I'm too busy resting up for next year to worry too much about the why and whether.

The campground is at about midpoint of a "Good Sam" rally, but we're still camped in the Pecan Grove and all of their campers are too big to park on the grass, so they haven't intruded on our solitude except for a fair bit of windblown trash. We've heard that there's a "frisbie golf" tournament coming in soon. That may be more interesting - although it's not likely to match the county fair they put on for us when we arrived in mid July.

Well now some of the wimps waited until the last minute to get into the lineup, but we were here July 17 ready and waiting.

Then all of the wimps went home, just because the festival was over, but we're still sitting here in the Pecan Grove.

Boy howdy it does*get*quiet*here.

Krista (a.k.a. Tie Dye Lady) is still here right next door, but only because she had a lot of packing to do. She'll likely leave sometime tomorrow.

J*** (a.k.a. "that guy who's been living in the park for three years") is just down the road.

There are a couple of good-ol' boys out in the west boonies trying to run out of beer, and they may be here for a couple more days.

Otherwise, we're pretty much alone.

Maybe we'll just sit here until next year. (?)

Frank -
I missed the autoharp workshop this year, but had the great pleasure of meeting and talking with Adam last year. He came up to me on the midway to ask about the Woody Guthrie t-shirt I was wearing, Bill Monroe shirts being more common. We visited for quite a while in the middle of the street, then went straight to his performance. The show was both educational and a great deal of fun, particularly a frog song. A nice guy and a great performer.

My Trip Home

We loaded up Monday morning in the rain and headed for Texas. As we drove through Ark City we started to notice folks standing along the road holding American flags and signs. Some of them would stir and raise their flags as we drove by in the big green Jeep. We were delighted, never having had that kind of reception in Ark City before. We caught enough of the signs to know that the folks were there to welcome home someone named Sgt. Tyler Juden, but still we had great fun being part of the parade.

We soon arrived at where the main crowd was gathered and TV vans were parked. When we drove around the TV vans we saw the funeral home sign. It got pretty quiet in the big green Jeep.

Now normally I wouldn't mention a private, embarrassing moment like that one, but it got me thinking. Some people at the festival, myself included, have complained pretty bitterly and pretty publicly about the local youth causing problems and disrupting the festival – particularly last year out by the lake. OK, if I can complain about the young people around Winfield publicly, then I can also acknowledge Sgt. Juden's service publicly – at least as publicly as I can from a keyboard this evening.

Sgt. Tyler Juden, 23, born January 18, 1986 in Winfield, Kansas; died September 12, 2009 of injuries sustained while on active duty with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan. Decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster. Welcome home, Sgt. Juden.

Land Rush went well--we got our favorite spot to camp, got electric and water hookups, and the Water Hole Gang is all here. ("Roll out the barrel!") Even had a visit from Uncle Phil and Michele Thurs. afternoon--was great to see them again.

Lots of music planned for tonight; I'm hoping my scooter gets charged up anough to make it over to the Walnut Grove again to the Kowboy Korner for some good country music. We haven't been playing nearly enough and have sure missed it.

So...on with the Festival (only 3 days til it actually starts) and with looking up friends we haven't found yet. Al and Barbara, I'm not taking "who?" for an answer this year! Also need to locate the Thistle Dew Crew, who are probably over in what John calls the Great Eastern Desert. I got to attend a beginner's jam today and had a great time playing my mountain dulcimer and singing along with the others. Fun!

Chick Pick, Rat Camp Band Challenge, Carp Camp Parade--waiting for the traditions to happen...

Observation at midnight:

When you'r one of the elders, rolling up 100 feet of AWG 10 extension cord to get ready to move is a lot harder than rolling out the same cord. It took two breaks, a couple of coffees, a sitdown or two, and extended conversation with a couple of youngsters who think they're "experienced campers" to get the regular hookup down and packed ready for morning, and a few minutes more to roll out a lighter weight cord, for quick pickup in the morning to get us through the night.

Maybe if I'd left the Jack out of the coffee it would have gone quicker, but there's no real hurry as long as everything is ready by 07:00 CDT tomorrow.

It appears that a small part of the population here intends to stay up for the big event, but we "old folk" will nap for at least 4 or 5 hours. All seems in good order (or as close as is necessary) and tomorrow we'll be at the festival.

I don't expect it to feel a lot different than the past two months we've spent in the campground here (we came earlier than usual), but there definitely will be more music and it will be a lot easier to find the old friends.

See y'all in the morning.

hmmm..for several years, beginning in Year 1, I camped 'approximately' where it says 'Carp Camp',,,kinda on the border near the road. I was never near what is now labeled Pecan Grove. I don't think they needed it back then. Year 1 was dry & nice...then 2 weeks after the festival, everything was under 2 ft. of water. I never experienced the really wet years.

Y'all have fun & stay dry!

But note that if there is straw in the campsite NO FIRE IS ALLOWED.

The rule has not been vigorously enforced, but has been strictly enforced where one of the fire-guys (or gals) happens by.

eople on the high ground, where straw isn't needed, will generally have sufficient fires, so you can just go visit (and pick) next door if you need a little "warming." Contributing wood for the fire is often welcome, and a good way to make acquaintances so it doesn't hurt to bring a little if you've got some - whether or not you end up having your own home fires to keep burning.

At 16:45 CDT people are making good progress at getting hitched and loaded for the Land Rush in the morning. Progress is slightly hampered by some intermittent rain, but that only really bothers places downstream from here. At present there is a lot of mud from the rain, but that should dry out in a day or two with good weather, or get to be something to swim in if it continues to rain here.

Thanks again for the info everyone. We are going to be heading towards Winfield tomorrow afternoon. We hope to get a spot saved down in west walnut grove. I am sure it will be muddy on Saturday but we hope it will be dry enough to get our camper parked down there by Tuesday or so. (I wish I had 4-wheel drive.) Someone asked about the chances to get electric hook-up if they were not there in line for the land rush. Well, we always camp in west walnut grove. In my past experience, I have never been there for the land rush and have obtained electric hook-up every year. I think one year it was as late as Tuesday before festival when we arrived. It has required about 15 minutes of searching for open outlet and about 200 foot of extension chord weaved in and out between other camp sites but we got power. Good Luck. Ok everyone, if the rain begins to fall and people start heading to Oxford or the lake let us know asap. Thanks

Al, thanks for the map. Our smiling faces will most likely be in the crowd watching you. We'll be the ones screaming for more...

GUEST, Teresa: If you don't already have a place saved (by camper, tarp, golf cart or some such) in Lineup, I'd venture to say it won't do you a heck of a lot of good to get here until Land Rush has begun on Saturday morning. The place is jammed full at this time (estimate 1,000 units); they've got campers parked damned near everywhere.

This is posted at the official Walnut Valley Festival site: "Due to limited parking space, festival staff are asking that if at all possible campers not arrive at the fairgrounds prior to the Saturday morning opening of the campgrounds."

That said, if you really need electric, use your own judgment. You didn't say which Grove you camp in--Pecan has considerably fewer hookups than Walnut, and you'll likely be unable to get electricity in the Pecan Grove regardless of which day you show up. Don't know about the Walnut--we don't camp there, so have no way of knowing.

Good luck,
Lin

You don't know me however, you seem to be the only website that is keeping abreast of the situation at Walnut Valley. The question is, should folks who were planning on coming down Friday night to get in line for Sat. Land Rush go ahead and come down Friday? They are getting the impression they shouldn't show up until Saturday a.m. Of course, they are afraid if they wait they won't be able to find a place or get electric. Any insight into the situation would be appreciated.

Lin is trying to confuse me. I was logged in and she "forgot" to re-log.

The Hydrological Survey shows that the river crested at 17.97 feet at approximately noon today, and is decreasing, down to 17.53 at 16:00 (CDT). The projected decrease is fairly rapid, with an expected 10 ft drop within 24 hours. Areas that drain well, and that were only briefly under water, should be usable within a day or two if currently predicted weather upstream holds.

A quick tour to the Walnut Grove (17:00 - 18:00 CDT today) shows it about the same as same time yesterday, but people have placed markers on the road past the boat ramp that show a peak about a foot or foot and a half higher than now – or yesterday.

For discussion purposes, a look at Don Shorock's "Picker's Paradise" site is suggested. Don has a habit of using one page with "local links" to everything else, so when you copy a link from the browser address bar you get the same address for every page. You can right click and copy the link for a page before you click to go to it, but that confuses me.

At the above link, scroll down to the "Virtual Winfield." Click there (it might be virtual index) for a reasonably decent map of the campground.

At top left, there should be a pale green area, and the top left part of that area I assume would be what's called "the swamp" by some. The area in the far top left was – and is – under water. (The river was at about 17 ft at this time yesterday and now (18:00 CDT).)

The little stub road under the bridge is passable – and hasn't been noticeably wet, but anything more than a few yards west from it (near the bridge) is a placid lagoon. Some of that little corner retains water after the river goes down, if I recall past years, although I haven't been up there much for some years..

The road past the boat ramp was completely covered, but not deep on the road. The submerged area, between the road and the river, is unlikely to drain well, and anything West of that little road is likely to be pretty soft for more than a few days. (with the possible exception of a couple of high points where the fisherpersons camp regularly).

The ground on the other (east) side of that road is a foot to a couple of feet higher, and usually drains well, so inside the loop should be in fair to good shape for camping by Saturday, with the exception of a few spots that retain water just from spills and a bit of rain.

South of the boat ramp road, up to the power plant rubble wall, to where the one by the boat ramp road rejoins the other "streets" was almost all submerged, within a very few yards of the road; and that area also – IIRC – tends to retain water, so it would be "iffy."

At the bottom of the map, a pink and a bluish area indicate the traditional Pecan Grove. (The Eastern Desert – east of the grandstands, is now being called "part of the Pecan Grove" for campsite/lineup purposes.) I haven't been over to the south (traditional) Pecan Grove today, but yesterday evening it appeared that the river hadn't come over the banks, although the additional foot at the time of the crest may have let some water in. Most areas there drain fairly well, so except for lots of mud south of the main loop roads I wouldn't expect any problems – or at least none worse than what we get with a little local rainfall.

A few worry-mongers are claiming there are forecasts of additional rain "up north" which could cause another rise in the river. I don't have any confirmation of any such reports; but stay tuned … It would take another fairly massive downpour to upset things as they are now.

John

John's taken his "mobility chair" over to the Walnut Grove to see what's happening with the water there, so I'm going to add my two cents while he's not checking the gauges, asking fellow campers questions, and recording progress for the soon-to-be campers. The Walnut River was supposed to have crested today (Thursday) at noon. Land Rush is still on for Saturday the 12th. I haven't heard from anyone about the Warm-Up Picnic, so don't know if that's still on for the same day or not. Uncle Phil, I'll check with Murph tomorrow when he shows up to hook up his camper, and find out what's going on with that. I'm sure they're still having the Picnic, just don't know if it's still on the 12th, since a lot of the workshop teachers will be moving their campers for Land Rush. Will post more when I find out the skinny.

AL--where is Biederman's Restaurant??? Main Street? Haven't found a sign for them yet, but would sure like to come listen to you guys (and gal) play. Please give us directions?

Sorcha, how will we recognize your mom-in-law? I'll be glad to say "hi," but random "hi's" are usually flying all over, as you know.

Whoops! John is just back from reconaissance, so I'll let him give y'all the latest.

Lin

Yep, thanks for the information and updates. I guess I forgot to thank you guys for last year. I heard some really bad stories about the flood and was hearing nothing from the organizers, so I would have skipped Winfield last year except for the information that I was reading here and would have missed one of the best campground weekends ever out there by the lake. So thanks (a year late).

Sorry to say, I won't be able to join you all this year. I had a half-day outpatient surgery that developed complications, and I ended up spending ten days in the hospital. While I'm home now, I'm not yet fully recovered. So, you folks enjoy the dickens out of it, and I hope Karen and I will see you next year.

Big thanks as well from me on the updates from the grounds. My pop-up is in line down there and it's given me a big peace of mind hearing what the conditions are. Last year was tough in getting timely information on the conditions and fact that I needed to get on the road to rescue my camper. On the other hand the efforts of volunteers to get us out of the muck and re-located to alternate campsites was phenomenal. I was blown away by the efforts to put in power and portapots, etc. out at the City Lake. See you all in a day! Happy Winfield!

JohnInKansas Thank you!!! This forum has been fantastic! The info you have provided is the exact kind of info festival goers need. Last year was tough. I did not know where to go. I was just lucky to get a hold of a friend about one hour before driving aimlessly toward Winfield. My friend directed me to Oxford and it ended up being a great time as always. Now, if I may, I would like to ask you a couple of specific questions. What is the current condition of the bayou? (extreme west walnut grove) and.. Will the bayou be underwater or just really muddy by Tuesday? What are your or the 'experts' current predictions? Also, are you familiar with camp super pickle or thistle pickle or whatever they call themselves. I have failed to contact them and would like to know if they decide to set up at the fairgrounds or if they bail to Oxford or the lake. Thanks in advance -John (Oh and thanks to everyone who has contributed info)

P.S. To Johnby in hartford, ks .. I am sorry to hear that you have decided not to come. I agree that the festival organizers could have done a better job giving more detailed info last year. The info I got from the website and from calling was from the perspective of the organizers. When what I really needed is info from the perspective of campers. Which I have found out to be very different. Organizers just don't seem to understand what we want and need. I am sure that the fairground flooding issue has been a hot topic in Winfield for a long time. It has probably been an issue for many events that occur there every year. Unfortunately, the only 2 options are probably to build a dam or relocate the fair grounds. Both would require millions of dollars. I am going to write a song called 'Damn, Build a Dam'. If you come to the festival I will sing it for you.

This morning USGS shows the actual Walnut River stage running below their revised prediction. The peak will be today so the festival should be OK.

A check at Oxford this afternoon found about a dozen campers, a couple of tents, two or three "shade pavilions" and a "Carp Camp" sign hung on one of the RV camp permanent pavilions, suggesting that Carpers have "reserved" it.

We were, unfortunately, unable to find any people there so we were unable to confirm that they were WVA addicts, although some of the vehicles had "that look."

Guest, Land Rush

If you have a "place" with a Lineup number you are free to go in and out. Without that, we'd starve because our fridge only holds about three days worth of food and we've been here since July 17.

Just tell them at the gate that you have a PAID FOR marked spot for your camper.

They have started (today) collecting tickets and putting wrist bands on people, so after the first entry you may need to "show a wrist" to get in - especially through the back gate.

The attempt to discourage "new" people from coming before Saturday is because there is limited space where they can create a new space for a new camper/vehicle.

You will need to find a place to park the golf cart (formerly your camper) and the vehicle you come in without blocking fire lanes and the little paths others need in order to get in and out to get the groceries; but your camper replaces the "marker" golf cart so it doesn't require a new space.

All clear?

John
