On a less serious but music-related note, isn't there a song involving a hitchiker being picked up by a car full of naked religious people? I know I heard it somewhere, but I can't remember where and I can't find it in the database.

What a mental picture that is.....O my Lord....I'll be having nightmares tonight for sure....Maybe if I play some Old Timey Gospel it will relax and calm the frazzled mentals....

On a more serious note, the Loch Lomond story I got from a friend who sings a very beautiful version of the song is that it is the story of two captured soldiers, both from the same village. One was condemned to die and the other released. The song is the words of the condemned prisoner to his fellow villager...Again, here the 'low road' is the one that follows death, while the 'high road' takes the living home. So as is typical of folklore, one doesn't know which version to subscribe to, but the interpretation of the high and low appears to be the same in both cases.

Hi, half a pint of Murphy's, please, what's all this about ghosts? I've been trying to find the lyrics to The Ballad of Bethnal Green, and it's driving me NUTS. I used to sing it in....er....1966, and now I've forgotten it. What you've been seeing is the ghost of my lost youth!!! Oh, ta, bbc, I'll have a bag of pork scratchings as well, thanks. Bron.

Wow, push on those swinging saloon doors and get zapped in here by a blue clicky thing. Some trip. Hey Leej, I brought a hammock. Let's stretch this thing out above a corner of the deck. A bucket of ice and cervezas close at hand, some guac and tortillas. Monday's gonna be O.K. Can somebody turn the sun down just a little? Viva inertia. Dave

If this is the Red Riding Hood ghost from "Don't Look Now", I am out of here, gone. Brrrrr.
Of course it could be "The Rabbit in Red".

Hey gang! Sorry to stick bbc with all the drink and food duties, but I am just screwing down the last of the planks on the new outdoor deck. We will have a wet bar AND a cappucino bar under the awning out there. I could hear somebody playing Abilene- man that one is one of my favorites, along with Goodnight Irene. I remember driving through Kansas one May night, and stopping for gas at about 2:30 am. I was singing Goodnight Irene to keep myself awake, and when I pulled up to the pump I was still singing it. The attendant filled the tank, then stepped up to the driver window and sang harmony on a verse. Sounded so good we sang another one.

Seems like everytime we change threads, we pick up a new hero of the Beat Generation. Now Cassady and Kerouac are sharing their booth with Ginsburg and Kesey. No you can't see em, but nevertheless they are there. They become quite visible on full moon nights about closing time, but if you listen closely you can hear Kerouac's non-stop patter, Cassady's laugh, Ginsburg spouting esoteric imagery, and Kesey ordering more of the blue onion rings (yeah, I know they aren't blue- you try telling him!).Kind of an undercurrent to the usual din of conversation in here. Yes, it's the booth directly below the bay window with the Mudcat Tavern lettering. PJ doesn't realize it, but she's actually sitting on Cassady's lap right now. I try to steer people away from sitting in that booth, because all kinds of weird things happen, like when Kesey slipped LSD in that CPA's Sprite.

" Happy Trails to you... "

seeing as how it'sstill morningwhere I am, I'll have some OJ -- maybe I'll slip a little (virtual) cognac into it when no one's watching --

Abilene sounded great; the spirit of Bob Gibson is hovering, beaming approval, I hope.

did somebody offer a strum along to "Trouble in Mind?"

"Oh, Neil......wooooooo"

wind whistling through a shutter is heard)

"Neeeeiiillll.....come away with me."

a slight movement, out of the corner of his eye, catches Neil off guard, he gives a start and gasp

Neil: "Why who could that be? ....Why, I think it's Little Red Riding Hood! Hey there Little Red Hood, I don't think little big girls should, go walking in the spooky, uh...spooky, oh yea, spooky old woods alone! Hey, guys, didja see that? No, really I think it was a ghost, didn't you hear her call my name? Uh, I've only had one, today! Naw...just give ma another pint! I gotta go to the eye doctor and get my eharing checked!"

He turns back to the table, bends an elbow, throught the glass bottom of his drinking mug, he sees the face of a young girl in a red hooded cape smiling at him from around the corner of the bar.

Neil's mates: "Hey, chum, wake up! Are ya alright? That was a fast tumble from a low chair. What in the world's up with you? Here, take a swig; it'll put hair on yer chest! Now, what was that you were saying about some more old ghosts wandering in....?

You are truly a gentleman and a scholar, sir. I'll have my usual poison, seeing as it's Monday, save the good stuff for later in the week. Beam on the rocks, make it a double - again, seeing as it's Monday. Today I feel like one of the barflies waiting for Hickey in The Iceman Cometh. I'll just have to figure out which one. Probably Slade, old fatalist philosopher. I hate Mondays - wonder what percentage of all the blues tunes were written on Monday?

Maybe if I sit here long enough I'll see some more old ghosts wander in....

FADAC, thanks for the information on that great old Scottish folk song. I had always wondered what the back ground to that song was. The McWilliams side of me particularly was curious.

It's a bit early out here in the desert to imbibe in the strong stuff, but a cup of coffee would certainly go great if you are around, bbc!

Roger, surely - hi folks! Two pints of Pedigree for me and aer kid, and whatever you're having? - it's natural for Mexicans to tell jokes in a foreign language? They speak Spanish, for heaven's sake!

You are a scholar and a gentleman, Pete, I'll have a small Metaxas. Actually that joke was told me this weekend by a Mexican: I always admire people who can tell a joke in a foreign language, I know I couldn't (and she's justwritten a science PhD in English!). I also heard some good Irish jokes from my Irish friends that evening but somehow I can't now remember them! (It WAS a good evening!).

Fadac, I have wanted that information for years. Naomi Mitchison used it in her book "To the Chapel Perilous", and I never understood what it meant. She always writes as though the reader knows what she knows, and she came from a very well-educated family. Thanks. Glad I popped in just now, but I can't hang around, as I have a classroom to clear.

OK, I promise not to sing or play my kazoo, but can I tell you a story?
Priest in confessional: Yes?
? Man:Father, I'm 80 years old, have led a blameless life up till last night when I went to a low bar [could it have been the Mudcat Tavern?], got drunk, met two 18-year old stunners, took them to a motel and made love to both of them several times.
Priest: When was your last confession?
Man: I've never been to confession before
Priest: Why not
Man:Because I'm Jewish
Priest:Why are you telling me then ?
. Man:I'm telling everyone!

Barkeep, they're throwing beermats at me again!

Loch Lomand a great tune. The MacFarland clan comes from the shores of Loch Lomand. So the tune has extra meaning for us. (sigh) The story that I heard, about the low road. The low road is how your soul travels after death to get home. I had heard the story that the English (nach) had a big prison full of Scottish Jackobites. Well, the care in there wasn't very good, and they died like flies. So the prisoners that were reliesed, took the "High Road" home. Those that died in captivity, they took the "Low Road".

Now listen to the song, with that in mind and it makes sence, with the never never meet again line.

Anyway my .02 worth on a pre-coffee monday. (Ack!)

-Fadac

Those transporter warp-jumps are a bit rough, caught me as I was coming through the door!

Wasn't the bar on the right and the door to the kitchen on the left before? Coulda sworn... *mumblemumblestumblemumble*

anyhow - finished a weekend of Ren-faire and want something mellow - heard a really nice medley of "Red is the Rose" and "Loch Lomand" this weekend - anyone up to trying it?
