Subject: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 03 Dec 09 - 07:53 AM Well, all you new Show of Hands out there, from the fRoots board have just taken WAY too long to start this thread, so I thought I'd do it for you. I've still to get this CD yet, BUT...this morning I heard the title track on BBC Radio Devon, on Judi Spiers programme, as she loves Show of Hands......and I have to say....it's a GOODY!!! Not only that, but I heard it on the very morning when all the Corporate Bastards from 'The Royal Bank of We've Got All Yer Money Up Here in Scotland Yaboooo Sucks' have threatened to resign en masse if the wicked Government doesn't let them have their bonuses amounting to....wait for it guys....to.....One and a Half BILLION pounds! Resign, chaps...and do us ALL a favour! Anyway, 'Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed' exactly fitted my mood about those people this morning... Oh...and you can hear it right here, for the next seven days, on Judi's programme, via 'Listen Again'...AND, you can also catch an entire interview with Steve and Phil, which was broadcast yesterday on Judi's programme too, on the same link. BBC RADIO DEVON |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Smedley Date: 03 Dec 09 - 07:56 AM So that's what happened to Judi Spiers. She used to be on national (rather than regional) TV & radio a lot in the 80s/90s, and I always thought she was an excellent presenter. Good to see she is still in work somewhere. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 03 Dec 09 - 08:04 AM Oh, she's been down here for years and years, Smedley. She also writes in Devon magazines too. Very funny lady she is....and she should be all over our TV and main radio too, because she's so quick witted and intelligent. Seth Lakeman and Show of Hands are three of her local heroes..and Radio Devon gives them a lot of support. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Pete Jennings Date: 03 Dec 09 - 09:32 AM I think SoH are great and have done for a long time (since the Arizona Smoke Review days!?), but I can't say that this CD matches their best. Interesting material though. Pete |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: GUEST,Fagan family Date: 03 Dec 09 - 09:42 AM We love it and think it is their best so far. Thank you Lizzie for starting this thread |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: SunrayFC Date: 03 Dec 09 - 10:00 AM I like SoH- last saw them in Dorchester. I think their on stage performances are some of the best- CD quality, but then they do spend the necessary effort getting their sound right. And it works. Strong song-writing, perfect musicianship. I do not think AIG is their best. But then they have so much material to choose from. Are we alright, Country Life, Cousin Jack, Undertow....Oh I could go on. Wish they would grace the Sunray stage.... |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: theleveller Date: 03 Dec 09 - 10:44 AM "Corporate Bastards from 'The Royal Bank of We've Got All Yer Money Up Here in Scotland Yaboooo Sucks'" That's very mild indeed for these obscene individuals and their unbelievable greed and arrogance - in fact, I can barely think of words strong enough to describe them (but will try, if pushed). BTW, Amazingly, I haven't heard the new SOH yet. Must try harder! Oooh, wonder if Santa has any copies!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: GUEST,Captain Jack Sparrow Date: 03 Dec 09 - 10:44 AM Elizabeth, have you partaken of this treasury delight? The RBS theme tune. AIG Video |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Dave Roberts Date: 03 Dec 09 - 10:56 AM Although I don't like it when threads like this, which are supposed to be about music, include comments about a person's use of language and the like, I have to say I'm firmly on Lizzie's side on this one. As has already been said, she shows great restraint in her description of these bloodsuckers. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 03 Dec 09 - 12:33 PM Captain Jack, can you email me the words, please? |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Dave Roberts Date: 03 Dec 09 - 01:04 PM Coming back to Show Of Hands, I just watched/listened to the video. It's brilliant - a protest song in the good, old-fashioned, worthwhile sense. SoH have played Middlewich several times, and were never less than fabulous. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: SunrayFC Date: 03 Dec 09 - 02:26 PM That does it- I'm out! Shame. Like a TV programme really....if you dont like it, switch it off. If you don't like comments in a thread, go follow another thread. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Dec 09 - 02:27 PM Please remember that this is a thread about Show of Hands. Green Wellies, it is very clear that you are trying change the thread into another brawl. You are not welcome to post to this thread. Feel free to post in the Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed & Foul Language thread, where your messages (and replies to your messages) have been moved. -Joe Offer, Forum Moderator- |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Dec 09 - 03:39 PM My eldest Lad introduced me to SoH many years ago and, although I appreciate that they are very good at what they do I cannot say it is realy my cup of tea. No problem there - personal taste and all that. I am sure Phil and Steve will not miss my support as they have thousands of appreciative fans already. It was a long time ago I listened to their stuff so I will give the new album a listen (son #1 probably has it on his wish list!). In the meanwhile can I suggest that those who like their protests with a twist could do worse than giving Leon Rosselson a whirl. This is his stuff on Amazon and I think if you like any you can make a bit for Mudcat by using their Amazon link as well. Or Buy through Camsco of course:-) Enjoy DeG |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed From: Mick Woods Date: 03 Dec 09 - 04:13 PM We had Show Of Hands at folkmob about 10 years ago! |

Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: GUEST,Captain Jack Sparrow Date: 04 Dec 09 - 04:20 AM The lyrics are in the booklet that comes with the CD. Of course that may be missing from the Pirate Editions.... |

Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Dec 09 - 08:43 AM Just read this review of "A committed, convincing reinvention of a Brit folk institution" by Colin Irwin on the BBC web site. Sounds good. DeG |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: nickp Date: 07 Dec 09 - 08:58 AM Great duo (plus Miranda, of course) and great cd. Different to previous cds but no worse for that. And as for the sentiments.... |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Paco O'Barmy Date: 07 Dec 09 - 11:52 AM I like Show of Hands... have about ten of their CD's... seen them umpteen times. But this is where I differ from the F#lk world, I would no more take my politics from a singer than I would from my milkman!!! I won't be buying this particular CD of their's. Sorry chaps. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 07 Dec 09 - 11:57 AM "ENDS Within the broader music industry, and beyond, what some get for their hour's work, compared with others, is ridiculous and inhumane; hence, many relatively competent musicians within the folk-scene are really struggling to make ends meet; so, if we like fair competition, we don't like capitalism. A better way, as I've suggested in verse, is to accept that humans are competitive, and have strong regulations (partly via nationalisation) to make that competition as fair as possible – whilst also providing 'safety-net' support" (from here). |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Jim Carroll Date: 07 Dec 09 - 02:52 PM "Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed" Sounds like a firm of solicitors Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Gweltas Date: 08 Dec 09 - 01:53 AM Jim, Apologies for the thread creep but I just HAD to respond to your post with this bit of information :- There IS a firm of solicitors in Leamington Spa, UK, called WRIGHT HASSALL & Co.............and an equally wonderfully named firm of solicitors in Co.Sligo, Ireland, called ARGUE & PHIBBS !! LOL. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: theleveller Date: 08 Dec 09 - 03:43 AM What I've always loved about Show of Hands is that they are never afraid to embrace the issues that matter, be it illegal wars, greedy bankers or the decimation of the countryside by those same selfish bastards and their like buying up the housing stock for second homes. This is in the true spirit of folk music. Yes, this CD will certainly be top of my Christmas list. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 Dec 09 - 03:57 AM I've just realised - The initials of the album are AIG - Do you think that may be significant? :D |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: nickp Date: 08 Dec 09 - 04:07 AM Surely not Dave... hur! hur! hur! |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Folkiedave Date: 08 Dec 09 - 04:27 AM Clearly sponsored by Manure. |

Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Dec 09 - 08:50 AM Paco, if you've already bought 10 of Show of Hands CDs, then you'll have no doubt realised that they ARE er....political. So saying you'll not be buying this one because it's er...political...makes no sense, really, does it? Lizzie (puzzled humourous smiley) |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Paco O'Barmy Date: 11 Dec 09 - 02:38 PM hiya Lizzie, It's thanks TO YOU that we got into Show of Hands!!! You got such a slagging on a thread a few years back about SOH, that I just had to hear what all the fuss was about!! So I popped out one lunchtime and bought 'Country Life' We loved it , and have followed them ever since! re: political folk, yes I understand. But we have all got the vote now, (even women) so, to my mind, the purpose of the Folk Singer has been acheived. Therefore they are now redundant, and should move aside for the next ( fully enfranchised ) generation. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 12 Dec 09 - 07:19 AM Paco, methinks you is winding me up! :0) NEVER has the political folk singer been more needed than in this Age of Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed! Yeesh! WHERE would you like me to start? South West Water would be a good 'local' one...the Watery B*stards are siphoning of the money from the people of the South West in a way that has never been known before...but our MPs down here are actually now uniting as one to try and get this outrageous situation brought out into the open. The Age of Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed is starting to implode and it's songs such as this which are helping to bring about that implosion. And...I'm really glad you found SoH music for the reasons you did. I've always known that 'all publicity is good publicity'....just a shame that some others haven't quite worked that one out yet...but they will, one day. :0) |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: GUEST,Elspeth Hart Date: 14 Dec 09 - 04:39 PM I have to agree with Lizzie! The fact we all have the vote really has nothing to do with whether other political material and folk are relelvant. People always have problems with the system and they have every right to have a moan =)And besides that, they're complaining about the arrogance and ignorance of those fat cats...not that they haven;t got the vote of (may I say a very limited list particularly because of how the elections are run here) who to put in charge. Alos to suggest that they should never sing about anything political...well it's to contradict the verynature of there music. And on top of that...only a couple of the new songs are pointedly political. Most of them are personal. hmm. I'm done. |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: Folkiedave Date: 14 Dec 09 - 07:15 PM Nice one Elspeth. Very perceptive. In a moment or two Lizzie could easily come along and agree with you! |
Subject: RE: Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed (Show of Hands CD) From: theleveller Date: 15 Dec 09 - 03:14 AM Take the politics out of folk music and all you're left with is death and sex - not much to sing about there :0 |
