Well, all you new Show of Hands out there, from the fRoots board have just taken WAY too long to start this thread, so I thought I'd do it for you.

I've still to get this CD yet, BUT...this morning I heard the title track on BBC Radio Devon, on Judi Spiers programme, as she loves Show of Hands......and I have to say....it's a GOODY!!!

Not only that, but I heard it on the very morning when all the Corporate Bastards from 'The Royal Bank of We've Got All Yer Money Up Here in Scotland Yaboooo Sucks' have threatened to resign en masse if the wicked Government doesn't let them have their bonuses amounting to....wait for it guys....to.....One and a Half BILLION pounds!

Resign, chaps...and do us ALL a favour!

Anyway, 'Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed' exactly fitted my mood about those people this morning...

Oh...and you can hear it right here, for the next seven days, on Judi's programme, via 'Listen Again'...AND, you can also catch an entire interview with Steve and Phil, which was broadcast yesterday on Judi's programme too, on the same link.

So that's what happened to Judi Spiers. She used to be on national (rather than regional) TV & radio a lot in the 80s/90s, and I always thought she was an excellent presenter. Good to see she is still in work somewhere.

Oh, she's been down here for years and years, Smedley. She also writes in Devon magazines too. Very funny lady she is....and she should be all over our TV and main radio too, because she's so quick witted and intelligent.

Seth Lakeman and Show of Hands are three of her local heroes..and Radio Devon gives them a lot of support.

I think SoH are great and have done for a long time (since the Arizona Smoke Review days!?), but I can't say that this CD matches their best. Interesting material though.

I like SoH- last saw them in Dorchester. I think their on stage performances are some of the best- CD quality, but then they do spend the necessary effort getting their sound right. And it works.

Strong song-writing, perfect musicianship.

I do not think AIG is their best. But then they have so much material to choose from.

Are we alright, Country Life, Cousin Jack, Undertow....Oh I could go on.

Wish they would grace the Sunray stage....

That's very mild indeed for these obscene individuals and their unbelievable greed and arrogance - in fact, I can barely think of words strong enough to describe them (but will try, if pushed).

BTW, Amazingly, I haven't heard the new SOH yet. Must try harder! Oooh, wonder if Santa has any copies!!!!!

Although I don't like it when threads like this, which are supposed to be about music, include comments about a person's use of language and the like, I have to say I'm firmly on Lizzie's side on this one. As has already been said, she shows great restraint in her description of these bloodsuckers.

Coming back to Show Of Hands, I just watched/listened to the video.

It's brilliant - a protest song in the good, old-fashioned, worthwhile sense.

SoH have played Middlewich several times, and were never less than fabulous.

My eldest Lad introduced me to SoH many years ago and, although I appreciate that they are very good at what they do I cannot say it is realy my cup of tea. No problem there - personal taste and all that. I am sure Phil and Steve will not miss my support as they have thousands of appreciative fans already. It was a long time ago I listened to their stuff so I will give the new album a listen (son #1 probably has it on his wish list!). In the meanwhile can I suggest that those who like their protests with a twist could do worse than giving Leon Rosselson a whirl.

This is his stuff on Amazon and I think if you like any you can make a bit for Mudcat by using their Amazon link as well. Or Buy through Camsco of course:-)

I like Show of Hands... have about ten of their CD's... seen them umpteen times. But this is where I differ from the F#lk world, I would no more take my politics from a singer than I would from my milkman!!! I won't be buying this particular CD of their's. Sorry chaps.

What I've always loved about Show of Hands is that they are never afraid to embrace the issues that matter, be it illegal wars, greedy bankers or the decimation of the countryside by those same selfish bastards and their like buying up the housing stock for second homes. This is in the true spirit of folk music. Yes, this CD will certainly be top of my Christmas list.

            It's thanks TO YOU that we got into Show of Hands!!! You got such a slagging on a thread a few years back about SOH, that I just had to hear what all the fuss was about!! So I popped out one lunchtime and bought 'Country Life' We loved it , and have followed them ever since!
            re: political folk, yes I understand.But we have all got the vote now, (even women) so, to my mind, the purpose of the Folk Singer has been acheived. Therefore they are now redundant, and should move aside for the next ( fully enfranchised ) generation.

South West Water would be a good 'local' one...the Watery B*stards are siphoning of the money from the people of the South West in a way that has never been known before...but our MPs down here are actually now uniting as one to try and get this outrageous situation brought out into the open.

The Age of Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed is starting to implode and it's songs such as this which are helping to bring about that implosion.


And...I'm really glad you found SoH music for the reasons you did. I've always known that 'all publicity is good publicity'....just a shame that some others haven't quite worked that one out yet...but they will, one day. :0)

I have to agree with Lizzie! The fact we all have the vote really has nothing to do with whether other political material and folk are relelvant. People always have problems with the system and they have every right to have a moan =)And besides that, they're complaining about the arrogance and ignorance of those fat cats...not that they haven;t got the vote of (may I say a very limited list particularly because of how the elections are run here) who to put in charge.
Alos to suggest that they should never sing about anything political...well it's to contradict the verynature of there music. And on top of that...only a couple of the new songs are pointedly political. Most of them are personal.

hmm. I'm done.
