Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 27 Dec 09 - 06:11 AM Do you remember entering? No...... :-) Definitely a scam. Do NOT reply. You could try and onforward it to some authority that deals with these scams - varies on what country you are in, or just delete it - that's the safest way... :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: artbrooks Date: 27 Dec 09 - 07:05 AM Clearly a scam, of course. It didn't originate in the US - we don't have 'postcodes'...ours are called 'zipcodes'. |

Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: MGM·Lion Date: 27 Dec 09 - 07:53 AM I have of course not replied & have deleted. Entry, rather cleverly, not an issue here as they claim it is my e-address that has won — though whence they will have scanned that, who knows? These people have their ways... |
Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: GUEST,Rapaire Date: 27 Dec 09 - 08:20 AM I'd enter if I were you. You could become rich and wealthy and all. Of course, if I were me I'd just delete the damned thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: MGM·Lion Date: 27 Dec 09 - 08:33 AM I already have Rapaire - deleted, that is, not entered, as I am me, not you [or is it the other way round? You are confusing me!] Woe, alas - now I suppose I shall never become rich and wealthy and all. |

Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Dec 09 - 12:03 PM I suppose if you wanted to design a generic address format that would work for all countries, it could reasonably use the terms city, state, and postcode. I believe Zip Code is unique to the United States, but postcode is an accepted international term. I think most Americans could figure out that postcode is equivalent to Zip Code. At least they both have the word "code" in them. The USA, Australia, and India have states. Canada has provinces. Britain and Ireland have counties. All these serve the same purpose as far as mailing addresses are concerned, but I don't know any generic term that means "state, province, or county." State is probably as good a term as any. Of course all this has nothing to do with whether the message is a scam or not. (I think it is.) But if you're trying to figure out what country the message came from, it really doesn't give you much of a clue. |
Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: JohnInKansas Date: 27 Dec 09 - 12:48 PM Except that in the USA a couple of the "states" insist that they are not states, but are "Commonwealths." And most states in the USA are also divided into counties - except for a couple where the divisions are "parishes" instead of counties. And while most of the "states" conform (loosely?) to "English common law" at least one subscribes to Napoleonic common law. But "aliases" are commonly used - with little confusion (for mailing purposes). John |

Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Dec 09 - 09:23 PM Dr. John R. Brinkley practiced medicine and operated a radio station in Kansas, and ran for governor. In trouble with the Kansas State Medical Board and the Federal Communications Commission, he lost his licenses and moved to Del Rio, Texas. He operated a powerful radio station across the border in Villa Acuna. He operated two hospitals, in Del Rio, and in Little Rock, Arkansas. He first transplanted a goat testicle into a human while still in Kansas, in the 1930s. He became wealthy (but not on the order of eastern entrepreneurs). He died in 1942, essentially bankrupt because of tax problems. His papers are held by the Kansas State Historical Society (see their website). All sorts of things were advertised on his powerful station. I wanted a toy boat advertised there, and made my parents climb walls until they finally broke down and ordered it. The motorboat toy was well-constructed, and had a little steam boiler that ran on Sterno (canned heat). It was my favorite toy for several years until I finally lost interest. I wish that I had kept it- I never found its equivalent when my kids came along. The station was responsible for launching the careers of several country singers. |
Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Dec 09 - 09:37 PM Hey, I found those boats on the net, but they run on olive oil or candle, no Sterno. Hmmm, second (or third?) childhood coming up? |

Subject: RE: BS: scam? From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Dec 09 - 04:37 AM Unfortunately, some of the most damaging fraud operators speak very good English (US or UK) and are capable of persuasive good grammar. Another victim of the recession: Ponzi schemes Increase in collapsed scams as $16.5 billion disappears like smoke in 2009 The Associated Press updated 2:56 p.m. CT, Mon., Dec . 28, 2009 MIAMI - It was a rough year for Ponzi schemes. In 2009, the recession unraveled nearly four times as many of the investment scams as fell apart in 2008, with "Ponzi" becoming a buzzword again thanks to the collapse of Bernard Madoff's $50 billion plot. Tens of thousands of investors, some of them losing their life's savings, watched more than $16.5 billion disappear like smoke in 2009, according to an Associated Press analysis of scams in all 50 states. While the dollar figure was lower than in 2008, that's only because Madoff — who pleaded guilty earlier this year and is serving a 150-year prison sentence — was arrested in December 2008 and didn't count toward this year's total. In all, more than 150 Ponzi schemes collapsed in 2009, compared to about 40 in 2008, according to the AP's examination of criminal cases at all U.S. attorneys' offices and the FBI, as well as criminal and civil actions taken by state prosecutors and regulators at both the federal and state levels. The 2009 scams ranged in size from a few hundred thousand dollars to the $7 billion bogus international banking empire authorities say jailed financier Allen Stanford orchestrated, as well as the $1.2 billion scheme they say was operated by disbarred Florida lawyer Scott Rothstein. Both have pleaded not guilty. While enforcement efforts have ramped up — in large part because of the discovery of Madoff's fraud, estimated at $21 billion to $50 billion — the main reason so many Ponzi schemes have come to light is clear. "The financial meltdown has resulted in the exposure of numerous fraudulent schemes that otherwise might have gone undetected for a longer period of time," said Lanny Breuer, assistant attorney general for the U.S. Justice Department's criminal division. ... ... ...
