Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Claymore Date: 01 Oct 10 - 11:34 PM Sorry to miss it but life has its compensations. Two weeks ago I did the sound for one of the most interesting concerts in over thirty years with the Mountain Music Concert featuring musicians from Nepal paired with a couple of the local Appalachian Old-Time fiddlers/mando players. Last week it was Scottish Weekend which used to take the week before the Getaway at Ramblewood, but now goes to Timber Ridge, just west of Winchester, VA. This week it is the Appalachian Heritage Festival in the Cultural Center of the Known Universe, Shepherdstown WV. The tie-in? Elizabeth LaPrelle who blew up the Getaway away in '01 is now a headliner with two of my favorites, Jay Unger and Molly Mason on Saturday night. I shall pass on the Getaways good wishes, where those who know, heard her at 13. Have a good time! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Sep 10 - 10:19 PM So, is the storm over and done with? I covered a lot of distance today because I didn't want to be driving through a storm, but all I experienced were high winds along the Hudson. That didn't stop me. I did a lot of walking on the New Jersey side of the Hudson and got great views of Manhattan. Cost me 25 cents for parking. See y'all tomorrow night. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Rapparee Date: 30 Sep 10 - 09:44 PM You mean the personal flotation devices that you can inflate by pulling the red handle or by blowing it by mouth? The ones that look for all the world like yellow toilet seat covers? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: GUEST Date: 30 Sep 10 - 06:20 PM I haven't heard anything about coastal/river flooding. Mostly certain roads in DC and Baltimore with dips/underpasses that are known trouble spots. And some storm drains around City Dock in Annapolis backed up. So as long as no tour buses wreck on US 50 we should be A-OK. -- Gary |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Severn Date: 30 Sep 10 - 05:46 PM KT, These personal flotation devices do not, by any chance resemble cowboys on horseback, ducks or flamingos, do they? Provided by the SINSULL Corp? |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Bill D Date: 30 Sep 10 - 01:09 PM The current weather report is for a clear and mostly sunny weekend. It may be 'damp around the edges', but I assume the camp was designed with location in mind. I'd guess it drains well...and it will have about 14-16 hours to dry from the predicted end of rain till we begin arriving. we shall see, hmmm? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: SINSULL Date: 30 Sep 10 - 12:36 PM Hate to ask this but... Flash flood warnings for Maryland, Pennsylvania, etc. Any news on the camp which is right on the water? Will I need rubber boots and a MacIntosh? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Bill D Date: 30 Sep 10 - 12:22 PM ....that is, if I get finish packing for fighting the leak that has materialized in my downstairs hallway....it's coming UP from some pathway under the foundation...*grump*...I actually have 2 fans blowing a stream into an unused shower stall! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Bill D Date: 30 Sep 10 - 12:19 PM well, last year I brought an extension cord and extra outlets, and several crockpot type things were plugged in on a table by a wall...I'll plan to do a similar thing...so 'reheating' like Nancy does it at least possible. (not sure of circuit limitations.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Nancy King Date: 30 Sep 10 - 11:45 AM Jerry, the potluck goes on from early evening until quite late, because people are continually arriving all evening. New food keeps appearing as people arrive. Note the only means we have of re-heating stuff is a microwave in the Retreat Center. I usually bring my chili in a crockpot. Charlie, yes, some folks do stay over until Monday, but you're supposed to have registered for that, just so the camp knows how many people they need to feed Sunday night and Monday morning. If you did not register for staying over, and want to, speak to Charlie Baum or Dean Clamons. There are no activities scheduled for Monday other than cleaning up and collecting hugs, but the late-night singing on Sunday night is often very nice. No Dani? Bummer! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 30 Sep 10 - 11:26 AM I notice there is a Potluck Dinner FCriday night. If traffic allows, we'll try to make it and bring something. The Getaway workshop schedule doesn't say what time the supper is. Anyone know? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Sep 10 - 08:53 AM Here's my picks for the weekend, which may change when I get more info or can't find a particular workshop: Saturday: Songwriting with Gordon Bok and Jed Marum Sea Shanties with Paul DiBlasi and Dave Diamond Pub Sing with Amos Jessop and Mark Ryer Old Time Songs with Molly Andrews and Debby McClatchy Challenging Choruses with Bill Day and Claire Norman Sunday: Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith with Charlie Ipcar Sally Rogers Inland Waterways with George Ward Ballads II with Colleen Cleveland and Wendy Grossman Parodies with Roger Himler and Micca Patterson And if some are filled to the brim there are plenty of alternatives. As I recall we can stay over Sunday night and leave Monday morning although I didn't see that mentioned on the schedule. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Linda Goodman Zebooker Date: 29 Sep 10 - 08:29 AM Being awake in the morning for workshops is not hard for me. One of my (so many) favorite things about the Getaway is the singing finally stopping and you realize the sky is getting light. You think about taking a wee nap, but then the sunrise colors on the water are so beautiful. A cup of coffee and you've convinced your brain you slept like a baby. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Sep 10 - 08:59 PM Who on earth will be wide awake at 10 am Sunday for a workshop on the poetry of Cicely Fox Smith and the songs adapted from such? I'm not sure I'll be awake but I'll be there. About 70 of her poems have so far been adapted for singing and recorded, and there are about 570 more poems to consider. The workshop will be a demonstration of how different singers have approached her poems. Please send me a PM if you're interested in leading a particular poem as a song. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: Abby Sale Date: 28 Sep 10 - 08:19 PM Well, I seem to have been suckered into finally going up to this thing, whatever it is. Anyone near enough to Raleigh to share a ride? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on .... From: beardedbruce Date: 28 Sep 10 - 12:36 PM KT, I've got my left-handed five string... ( also a left-handed trumpet) I have the 20kg of ginger- 4 5kg bags. Is that going to be enough, or should I try to get more? I'll be doing a violin sort at the Getaway, trying to figure out which ones to fix, which ones to keep, and which ones to sell. Kibbitzers welcome. |
