The Star of the County Down is on of my favorite
Irish trad. songs, and I would like to know if there is
more verses than thos five I alredy know..

Those are:

1.Near Banbridge town in the County Down...
2.As she onward sped, sure I shock my head...
3.I traveled a bit, but I never was hit..
4.She had a soft brown eye, and a look so sly..
5.At the harvest fair, she´ll be surelly there..

Sorry for my bad spelling....

Thanks for your help Mudcatters!!

On a thread last year (I think it was on upbeat songs?) someone claimed that in subsequent verses (that no-one ever sings) the guys' heart gets broken and he takes to drinking and ends up homeless....

Hi,

Can't remember what the thread was called, or who wrote this (apologies to whoever it was).

The gist was they claimed there were no happy Irish songs, I said "what about Star of the County Down?" and they wrote this last verse (which I saved) to turn it into a sad song.

So here I stand with my hat in hand, while my heart knows deep, dark blight
For my Irish lass, curse her heart of brass! tripped and died in the bar last night
Still her ghost doth say: twill soon be our wedding day, but I'll sadly call whiskey my bride
And in far off lands, sure I'll ring my hands, drain a glass and shout, Christ, I tried!

If whoever wrote this is still around, please take credit for this.

Alison - Here's the culprit's addition to last-year's thread - maybe someone can do a blue clicky thing to send people to the entire thread, I enjoyed re-reading it.

It is a common misconception that there exist happy Celtic songs. For example, many people will steadfastly maintain that there is NO FOURTH VERSE to Star of the County Down:

So here I stand with my hat in hand, while my heart knows deep, dark blight For my Irish lass, curse her heart of brass! tripped and died in the bar last night Still her ghost doth say: twill soon be our wedding day, but I'll sadly call whiskey my bride And in far off lands, sure I'll ring my hands, drain a glass and shout, Christ, I tried!
