Dear Mudcatters,

On Dr. Demento's Basement Tapes 12 there's a terrific song about the "The Queen of the Steam Machine at the Starbucks of County Down." It's done by "Trifolkal". It's a great song, but the melody sounds very old and I bet there's a at least a couple of other sets of lyrics out there and I'd like to find another set - you know, something about lost love, found love, war, sea-faring, etc.

So - has anybody out there heard the song, and, more to my point, know of an alternate set of lyrics?

Oh, my spam-blocker is set pretty tight, so please put "Mudcat" in the subject line of an e-mail and I'll let it right on through.

Thank you so much!

By Trifolkal on their Tao from the Mountain CD:

The Starbucks of County Down (Based on "Star of the County Down" -- Traditional music,   new lyrics by Neal Phillips, Greg Trafidlo and John Seay)

On a tour bus bound out of Dublin Town
One morning last July
Passed a sweet colleen, wearing cut-off jeans
Thought she winked as she caught my eye
I asked the driver if he did know

Where this lovely lass hangs around He said, she's the queen of the steam machine
At the Starbucks of County Down

Like soft ice cream from the Dairy Queen
Her skin was as fair as I've found
No babe I've seen like the sweet colleen
From the Starbucks of County Down

So I roved right down to her cafe counter
And ordered a tall latte
Made her laugh when I said "decaf"
Her eyes were green as young coffee beans
Her hair it was hazelnut brown
There was foam and froth, when we pledged our troth
At the Starbucks of County Down

Roasted, dark, espresso blend
Columbian freshly ground
These are all great words that you have not heard
As the song is a-winding down

From Bantry Beach to Seattle streets
From Galway to Puget Sound
No babe I've seen like my sweet colleen
The barista of County Down
Yes, my bride's the queen of the cappuccin-o
At the Starbucks of County Down

There are scores of song set to this tune, the most renowned of which is the Star of the County Down. There have been numerous threads on the subject which will be turned up by a search through the Forum records.

Regards,

A

This is right up there with Uncle Dave O's song
which says....she'd rather make coffee than love....
her caffe au lait was the lay she loved most...
her out spoken credo was damn the libido...

Amos, thanks for posting those great lyrics. I love it.
On close examination, it seems there's a line missing after "decaf" that would probably rhyme with "latte". Do you know what it is?

I have emailed Susangoo to come back and see all the links and words. Tony, I do not, no, but a Google search on "The Starbucks of County Down" will turn up the set of lyrics I posted from -- sorry I lost the URL!

Two verses run together-

So I roved right down to her cafe counter
And ordered a tall latte
Made her laugh when I said "decaf"
And I knew she'd be mine some day.

Her eyes were green..... etc.

Latte? day?

Why, how would you pronounce latte, Q? Sounds like a good rhyme to me- and I love the song!

Latte is pronounced la-TAY in the song. In normal usage it is pronounced LAH-tay.

Err.. Q and Amos, the liberty taken with pronunciation there is nothing compared with the line in the original song:

From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay
(Quay pronounced here to rhyme with Bay, when it is normally pronounced key.)

Noreen,

I think that (at least) the Dubliners always pronounce it kay even when not in a rhyming position.

Lah-TAY? It's Latty where I come from

Quay (and quai) are often pronounced "kay" as well as "key" in different parts of the English speaking world. Depends on how close tot he French origin you want to cleaver. The French pronunciation is "kay".
