Great idea, Janie.

Re the longer thread, it took me several minutes just to find the few links to photo albums in that thread, amid all the other posts.

And I'm sure the work of you Mudelves will be much appreciated, Mick.

OK, so the Alan A-Dale singers are Laura and Peter Sailer and who else?

That's a good idea, Janie. Unfortunately I am a bit tired, I will look at it tomorrow, if someone hasn't done it already. It would be nice to have them all in one spot.

All the best,

Mick

The uke/French horn combo was happily (and surprisingly) successful; most interesting combo I've heard since Fox Hollow, where they paired steel pans with Highland pipes.

I'm really, really sorry I wasn't at the Saturday concert--for all sorts of reasons.

I even got called on it at the Sunday concert. I should have at least said that Maestro Eschenbach sends his love.

But the horn player Saturday was Fred Sailer, (son of Peter Sailer, longtime FSGW stalwart and leader of the Allan-a Dale madrigal group.) Fred was accompanied by Dottie Hurley. I understand the piece was a movement from one of Mozart's 4 horn concertos. I believe it was the 3rd concerto, but I'll confirm this with Peter, Fred, or Dottie.

I think Genie is right. The other takes quite a while to load, and it is nice being able to come to one dedicated specifically to video's. IMO.

Mick

It's up to Joe and the clones, Janie. But the other thread is so all-inclusive and long that I feared the links and things pertinent to the videos would be missed by way too many people amid all the posts about photos, general memories, etc.   That's why I wanted a thread specifically about the audio-video files -- the ones for which we promised to get permissions before sharing.

I do think there should be links to these two threads at the top of each other, though.

Genie, would you have any objection to this thread being combined with the other Getaway memories thread? It is all of a piece, and I don't fancy having to go to two threads to see the videos and follow the comments.

If you don't object, maybe a clone could combine the two threads?

Well, he is that, Rap. : D

Charley, I'll check with Dennis, but I kind of doubt he was recording or I think Jennifer would have aknlowledged that along with telling everyone that I was videoing the concert.

I do think, though, that maybe some of the various camcorder elves who caught songs in workshops and cabins might possibly have videoed some of the performances in the concert. Let's see if I (we) can find a way to put the word out that we would like to know if anyone did. (Not all attendees are Mudcatters and not all Mudcatters check in at the forum often.)

BTW Big Mick and Donna Fletcher are also up at YT, but Donna's is still unlisted (so you can't find it) until she tells me it's OK to go public with it. Big Mick's is public. (He's easy that way.)

I was thinking of that, Amos. Not just because of problems with the internal mic but because it's often logistically awkward to position the laptop so as to optimize the sound pickup.
(I'd actually like to use an external camera too, for similar reasons, but I DK if I can afford that.)
In any case, when cats decide it would be fun to knock laptops off of tables and TSA personnel do things that result in your backpack/laptop-case falling off the conveyer belt to the floor, etc., you probably need to take the baby in for an MRI or heart transplant or at least a good teeth cleaning.

Kendall, I've noticed that many recordings done with camcorders, laptops, and even condenser mics often don't pick up guitars with true-to-life sound, even when the guitar is miked (as opposed to a DI, which can often yield distortion in the recording).   There's a reason why the big-time musician have whole vans full of audio toys and an army of sound techs.   There's one video -- the one where Bob Clayton is backing Claire Parmelee (sp?) -- where the vocals came out fine but I can't hear Bob's guitar at all. Maybe they didn't have the guitar mic in the right position?

But you're right, Kendall. I can see that you're playing a 12-string, but it sounds like a 6-string.

---

PS
Martha Burns's sing-along on Railroading On the Great Divide will be up at YouTube presently.    I did some clever (OK, strictly amateurish) editing to make up for the horrendous static there was in many places on the live recording. I think it came out looking and sounding pretty good.

I wonder if a small external condenser mic would handle the laptop sound issue, Genie. Worth a try.

For some reason those small recorders just can't handle the 12 string guitar. It sounds like only a few of the notes are coming out.

Anyway, it wasn't as bad as I thought when we were doing it.

Need song titles and credits for these concert performances:

~Jed Marum - Saturday night with Glyn Collinson (and is Glyn's instrument an octave mando or something else?)

~David Ingerson - Saturday night

~Lucy Ann Goldberg - need names of her accomplice..., er, accompanists and also the song credits

~The French horn player's name and the name of the piece.

~Wendy Grossman's "fractured fairy tale" song by Bill Steel(e)?

And anyone else who performed in the Saturday night concert (especially the second half) and thinks their names (correct spelling), song titles, and authorship credits may not be patently obvious from the videos.

Lisa, your Big Sandy song came out fine. And Craig's song was copyright protected the minute he wrote it. (The trick, if you don't register your copyrights, can be proving that you created the work and when.)    Anyway, I'll put that attribution on the video (if I haven't already.)

Jacqui, if you can email me the mummer's play script and the names of all the cast members (not sure which lovely lady it was under all those veils), I can put subtitles on the mime show.
(If any of the cast remember their ad libs and send them to me, I'll use those instead.)

I'd like to put the song titles and credits on the videos, including the soundless ones, so if you were in the first half of the concert Saturday evening, please post that info here or PM it to me.

Hey Genie--

Feel free to post anything you got on me at the Getaway. I performed Sunday. My song, Roll Big Sandy Roll, is by Craig Johnson. I do not believe it was copyrighted-- it was very early in his career and slipped into disuse.

Kendall, you're not shackled by modesty? That's so hard to believe!

Sad to say, Charley, your performance came out as a silent movie. I can send you a video file and you might be able to overdub it. (I could overdub it, but it would sound like me instead of you.).

Chance, you and Susette came out as mimes too, unfortunately. But the same goes for my sending you the soundless video. (Fortunately, Amos got some good audio/video of you and Susette last year which is up at YouTube, and maybe someone caught your music in the Peace Cabin or workshops too. There were a lot of camcorders hovering around here and there.

Genie-

I do hate it so when the technology breaks down. When we're doing recording at home we have a dedicated laptop with only the recording software installed; that eliminated some of the weird things which used to happen.

I'm assuming that the song I led didn't have any sound; I was near the end of the first set.

Subject: Getaway 2010 audio-video-Glass half full
From: Genie

Starting this separate thread for two or three reasons:

1. We (various and sundry paparazzi) got some really nice audio and video recordings, but in many cases there's either some jiggling of the video (hand-held cam-corders) or some sound distortion (different performers singing at different volumes and distances from the mics) or static (e.g., from my MacBook).   I hope we can appreciate and enjoy the mp3s and videos we did get, as mementos of the Getaway, and not focus on the often not-ready-for-prime-time quality of the recordings.

For several months now I've had intermittent static - and sometimes a total lack of recorded sound - with the videos I make using the built-in mic on my MacBook.    I believe it's due to loose and/or dirty connections inside the laptop and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and take it in for tech service.

I thought I had it pretty much under control for videoing the concerts, if I just made sure not to move the laptop or its chair during the performances.   But with so many people singing along, tapping feet and moving about, you can't prevent vibrations from jostling the laptop a bit from time to time.

Sad to say, on Saturday evening, the laptop was recording both video and sound just fine during the setup, as well as during the second half of the concert (after the break), but it stopped recording sound just as the first act (Glyn Collinson) was introduced and it recorded only video - no audio - for the entire first half of the concert. Glyn's performance, Amiel's, Bobert's Blues Band, the mummers' play, etc., all came out as silent movies!
Then, somehow - I guess because someone bumped the computer again during the break - it started recording sound again and the second half of that concert has sound.   As does the Sunday evening concert.

There is some static - sometimes a lot - on some of the videos. I've edited some of them where possible - e.g., if there's a good clean chorus on the video I've substituted that for one or two that were staticky - but in most cases I can't. Perhaps there is an audio-video processing software that's affordable that will let you "digitally remaster" bad audio, but I haven't found one yet.

2. Rather than PM everyone individually to ask permission to post the videos, I'd greatly prefer to have everyone who was in the concert PM or email me to say one of the following:

---A. Go ahead and post the videos of me on YouTube as "public". (Also let me know if you want me to enable "Embedding" on other sited.)
---B. Please let me see and hear my video first; then I'll tell you if I want it public.
---C. No, don't post my video on YouTube or any other website at all.

Also, I like to include songwriter credits, correct spelling of performers' names, copyright dates, and correct song titles on videos, so if you were in the concerts, please send me that info too.

3. Since individual posts of links to YouTubes soon get lost in the ongoing discussion threads, here's the easiest way to find the videos that have been posted as "public" on YouTube:
Do a search for "FSGW Getaway 2010" under the category of "Music."   If the performers are also Mudcatters and I know that, I'll also have tagged them as "Muddcatter."

(Note: If you search for "Mudcat" you will get umpteen gazillion listings that have nothing to to with music or mudcat.org. (It'll be videos about fish, marine dredging equipment, and maybe a few performers or sports figures with the nickname "Mudcat.")

The others who took videos at Getaway may want to post something here about how people should let them know their preferences re making them public too.

I hope we can make this as simple as possible.
