When my wife expressed criticism of my choice of jogging pants, a strange memory leapt to mind. Just the first verse of a song I'd heard decades before.

Took me a while to realize that it came from one of Oscar Brand's "Bawdy Songs and Back Room Ballads" series.

Anyway, here's my version, now an uplifting song about mature behaviour.

Fancy Pants

Nicely done as usual, John.

BTW, I have a copy of Oscar Brand's "Bawdy Songs and Back Room Ballads" with that tune on it.

I could only remember the first verse of the Jolly Tinker, which is the only verse that refers to pants. I was three-quarters finished before it dawned on me to check iTunes, which, indeed has a large collection of Oscar Brand songs, including this.

He's 90, but still kicking, and has an e-mail address. I've sent him a link to my "version".

Michael Enright did a really nice interview with him a while back on his Sunday morning program. It might still be available in the archives if you didn't get a chance to hear it.

This is what Fancy Pants means to me. I saw this years ago, and loved it.
Still do.

By the way, did you know he was the inspiration for the Sesame Street character Oscar the Grouch?

Hi John:

Good to run into you here. Long time . . .

I remain very proud that I can say that I
published your - The Pipkin Papers -
all those years ago. BTW - a copy (if you
can find one)goes for well over a hundred
dollars, last time I checked.

Last time I saw you I said I heard you won an Oscar and you
went and got it and showed it to me! You let me hold it, too . . .

I've been living in Western Massachusetts since '86.
Made a few CDs . . .

Peace and Love,

Wolf

Hi Wolf.
Yes, I have a few copies of Pipkin Papers; I'll save them for my old age.
Good to see you're playing.
cheers
JFW

I saw your link to this little ditty over on facebook. FWIW, your wife was right. But it's a clever song! ;-D
