Once again we're in the realm of Folk Religion & Missionary Zeal, to the extent people feel Folk needs to be represented. What utter nonsense. Like any other Band (Folk or otherwise) The Unthanks are an autonomous creative musical unit who represent only themselves, whatever traditions, roots, influences and inspirations they choose to draw upon. More power to them.

Have to say, I think 'grim' is a pretty fair assessment!

Never seen the Unthanks live, so can't comment on that, but I don't feel they have covered themselves in glory in their TV appearences, which, as they seem to be one of the folk acts who are the 'media darlings' of the moment is a great shame and a wasted opportunity.

As to Annahata's last question, there are any number of better candidates, but of course, the only acts that will make national TV will be the acts who the media perceive as having a wider appeal, (Bellowhead, Mumfords etc)

I agree that "pretty grim" is not very informative, but...
First,it's not cryptic for UK folkies who watch TV. Even I know who Jools Holland is and I hardly ever watch the box, and I know who the Unthanks are, though I wouldn't go out of my way to see them.

The issue is that folk music doesn't get much of an airing on national TV here, so it's sad when what little does get shown isn't (at least in someone's opinion) very good or representative.

Possible topics for further debate:
- other opinions on the actual show (I didn't see it, so can't comment)
- other opinons on the Unthanks
- who (else) should represent UK folk music on TV?
