Just when you thought it was safe to peek out from under the covers, George is back in front line politics.

Overturning a Labour majority of thousands George Galloway engineered a swing of 37% to take the seat of Bradford West and return in triumph to the House of Commons.
George is the greatest orator in politics, and as brave as they come, so look out for fireworks in the debating chamber.

George's message to the people of Bradford, which saw him elected?

DONT TRUST MAINSTREAM POLITICIANS!!......They are liars, warmongers, and hypocrits!.....................But we knew that...Didn't we???

Its hard to believe what's happened in English politics.

I think Blair managed to dislodge the last vestige of faith in Labour supporters (like myself) with the WMD scam.

What's worrying is that I don't see that level of disillusion from tories. The Daily mail may be vile, but it DOES seem to have its finger of the pulse of tory support. Which still seems very solid.

So I suppose that means they've won. Game over.

I think it's valuable to have someone who will actually take the fight to the Etonians, but I'm worried that he may forget that ALL religions need to be controlled by rationality.

Don't forget, Al, that that POTR (the party of the rich) came well behind Labour, getting only about 2,700 votes - and the Limp-Dems lost their deposit. Both those are very encouraging signs.

And in general the press seems to have decided (and not before time) that GOTR (the government of the rich) could not organise a pissup in a brewery nor indeed in a champagne house.

You'd have expected wilfully dismantling the NHS would have been their poll tax but instead it seems to have been attacking the richer pensioners and inciting illegal hoarding of petrol. Funny old world.

Quoth George: "If a backside could have three cheeks, then British politics is that three-cheeked backside."

Perfectly put. I'm hoping that this utter balls-up will be the kick up the Labour third of that arse that it needs. I mean, where are the bloody attack-dogs? Why didn't they see the danger and wheel every big gun into Bradford? If George can connect with the Muslim community why can't Labour? Labour are standing around with their fingers up their bums whilst the Tories are getting away with the most inept couple of weeks perpetrated by any party in the history of Man. Even George displayed a scintilla of guilt, saying that he didn't hate the Labour party and he wanted Labour to win the next election - and I believe him. I don't think even he anticipated the scale of this debacle.

Talking about arses. George is the man who licked Saddam's backside.
He shamelessly exploited his Moslem credentials, one Moslem ex-wife, and his present (third) wife is Lebanese. He constantly harked back to TB's little Middle Eastern adventure, and the present fiasco in Afghanistan.
So all in all his connections, his history, and his TV celebrity were the ruling factors in his success IMHO. However it will give the established 3 cheeked arseholes, something to think about, which is no bad thing.
He did a similar thing in East London, and unseated an excellent sitting MP in the shape of Oonagh King. It didn't last though.
He will be gone again in 2015.

If any government managed to get the average person as rich as Richard Bridge, they shall be classed as successful.

In the meantime, talk of parties or governments of the rich is little more than pitiful flat cap credentials from an ex Tory who claims to know what poorer people than him want.

Perhaps M'Unlearned friend wants the next Prime Minister to have credentials that include watching Cash in the Attic all day, shopping in their slippers and getting their baccy and papers from a bloke who goes to Calais every week in a dodgy old van?

Well Galloway is a good example of the Labour Party produced.

As Alan pointed out above
"The Daily mail may be vile, but it DOES seem to have its finger of the pulse of tory support. Which still seems very solid.

Give this government a chance, I think they are doing a great job. Support still very solid, yes I like that, very solid support.

Weell no what the labour party produced was the NHS, the open University, Mobility Allowance for disabled people - ideas that were dissed by the Tories as unworkable. And frankly represent a decency that no Tory could aspire to.

The point is that Milibamd is Blair mk2 ( mk3 after Cameron) and TB had a great opportunity to clean the Augean stables after trouncing the Tories, and he blew it.

No electoral reform, the MI5/MI6 still up to dirty work at every level led by a gang of mad right wing ex etonians, 96% of the wealth uncirculated - so it stays in the hands of those who flogged all the jobs to the Japs, and now the Chinese.

Lets face it for all the reasons you think the tories are great. I think their greedy useless bastards, and TB should have dismantled their power bases good and proper. But he didn't. And neither will Miliband.

A bit like the folkscene....nothing will change. We're stuck with it. Our kids are stuck with it.

Labour was once the vioce of the man in the street, the factory worker, the coal miner and the Ford car plant worker. And where did that get them ?

Unions almost brought the country to it's knees, so Labour had to change and shake off the "out out out" brigade. Margaret sorted out the unions, Labour became "New Labour" bargain shelf Tories.

Mr Fluids - I get by. I know many with more money than I, and many with less, but my needs are simple - log fire, adequate wine, 3 Volvos, grumpy old medium sized dog, hi fi, big TV so I don't have to wear glasses to watch it, PA rig, decent internet access and about 17 guitars. I don't support a person of preferred gender and my kids are now better off than I so I don't need to subsidise them.   What I've never done is ground anybody down to get what I've got.

It wasn't Galloway who unseated Oonagh King but the Bethnal Green electorate. And I'd be interested to know on what basis John MacKenzie thinks she was an excellent MP unless it was that he knows little about London politics.

Gorgeous George did overdo the sycophancy in his encounter with Saddam, but in clinging to that moment John should also remember that many western politicians maintained cordial relations with Saddam even after he had perpetrated his most notorious atrocity, but before he had been downgraded from ally to monster. On the question of John's accusation that Galloway has a Lebanese wife, I'm afraid Galloway is guilty as charged.

The Bradford result was extraordinary, not least because Labour didn't see it coming, and were not remotely prepared for it even by the time the poll closed. Regardless of any questions about policy raised by this defeat, it is plain that something was drastically wrong with Labour's campaign management and intelligence.

In an article on the Labour-supporting Labour List website, John Mann MP, who helped canvass the constituency, said one of the main problems was the inability of Labour activists to communicate with Urdu-speaking voters. It might be useful if this re-opened a debate about multi-culturalism.

Galloway is an intelligent and homourable politician and I'm glad he's back in parliament. But his targeting of a specific issue in Bradford bordered on the cynical. The issue is that the constituency includes significant communities of Pakistani immigrants and their descendants who have resisted all encouragement to assimilate into the native society. They retain their own languages and endeavour to protect their children from "western values." Several years ago this gave rise to Bradford's "Honeyford affair" in which a headteacher was villifed as a racist for advocating assimilation, and which in turn gave rise to a salutory article by Theodore Dalrymple. Dalrymple's article still makes alarming reading, not least because so little has changed since it was written.

Bridge's life does seem tempting, the way he puts it. Pity such contentment still leads to so many eat the rich views. Must say though, I am more with Bridge than Willie on this one. (That'll cost me a pint next week, but hey ho.) Though of course, I don't recognise the party of the rich waffle, as every party is of the rich once you learn the ropes...

I don't hold a candle for Galloway. His appeasement of Saddam Hussein sent all the wrong signals and was almost as bad as Th*tcher's "my enemy is my enemy" appeasement of the monster. Galloway is right to shout foul over Bliar's lies to provoke war, but his rosy view of life in Iraq was as shameful.

That said, he became my hero when asked at the USA hearing how many times he had visited Saddam, and he said the same number of times as Dick Cheney, the difference being he wasn't selling him arms. Got to hand it to him, he had style. (I didn't look up the actual quote, but it was approximately that..)

No, protest votes are all well and good, but tend to be good for extremist viewpoints, and that sends the wrong signals too. Fascist parties rely on people's frustration with mainstream government and Galloway, whether he is comfortable with the notion or not, is propping up the mechanism that gives extremists the oxygen of publicity.

The bloody nose for all parties would send a message to any government, except perhaps this one?

We all are Dave - cos the tories always win. Sometimes they're in charge of the labour Party.

The unions brought the country to its knees...? I worked for Leyland while i was waiting to re-take my finals. never saw a union member cause any trouble - saw thousands of dumb management decisions though.

No the problem with this country is that all the loots in the hands of the same people who had it in the 16th century. they sit on the money and just put it where it will make them more loot. Not always in the interest of the country.

It'll work for a while longer. But sooner of later all the problems they have neglected will make England uninhabitable.

Most people want to work. Want a mortgage - the status of paying your own way and buying your own home. All the bums you describe Bluesman are there because they are being denied work - and god knows its not because there isn't work that needs doing. Neither is there any shortage of willing hands - given the chance.

See Mary Portas's recent serial of programmes. Every week there someone weeping tears because of the death of the clothing industry and the relegating of the skilled workforce to idleness. The Tories watched and fucked over great companies like Viyella and celestion Wood where there was never any union problems.

I remember hearing two ladies who'd worked at Viyella saying how they could weep when they saw the crap quality that was on the shelves of marks and Sparks nowadays.

If you applauded Thatcher , Bluesman. You weren't a patriot. You didn't give a shit for your country. You weren't even a one nation tory.

Lots of tories were ashamed of what she did to the manafacturing industry in this country.

Quite frankly I'm surprised you weren't a Blair enthusiast.

I started to read the Dalrymple article but had to stop part way through as it was such reactionary and inflammatory rhetoric and in no way described my home city of Bradford.
As I recall Ray Honeyford published comments which the non-racist people of Bradford were horrified by. His description didn't in any way cover the reality of a town proud to embrace immigrants from all over the World. German Jews, Polish, Ukrainian, Czech,Estonian refugees of WWII, Irish, Jamaican, Indian and Pakistani, Students from Iran and Iraq - pretty much If you can think of it - they are in Bradford.
In the late eighties the Bradford Festival brought all communities together with city-wide entertainment and cultural events. In later years one of the highlights of the festival was the Mela, an idea subsequently copied by major cities including London and Edinburgh.
I have never seen the Bradford described by Honeyford, because it was a fantasy of people with a racist agenda, selectively ignoring anything which contradicted the position they were attempting to broadcast.
Quack!
Geoff.

There are many (millions? let's not exaggerate) of ex- Labour supporters around, particularly in post- industrial areas*. We tend not to vote, as there's no one to vote for. This has the rather unfortunate effect of leaving the field open to the fascists (UKIP and worse). So the election of Gorgeous George, while he's clearly a principled bastard- not my principles at least- is welcome as a recall of the old Labour (Santa Clause Four days) policy of reminding old bastard trades unionists scared of black faces, and new immigrant would-be political gangmasters, of the unity of necessity of the working class. Because the tories are (and are now even more so) far worse.

And bluescrap and gonzo are the alternative.

The Blair govt threw him and many like him out and put people like Two Jags and Neil Kinnock in (despite their having said that they would not want it) And they said it far more vociferously than that.

Galloway is a fool, always was, always will be, he has a history of chasing young women looking passion and receiving dosh from shady figures, both of these easily confirmed in a web search.

Bradford got what it deserved, it is a tip, as are the people living in it.
