The P-Vine has a treadmill with a couple thousand miles on it and she get on it every morning and racks up a couple more doing between 4 and 5 mph... Ya'll with me so far??? So, she says that we need to pick up three things at the grocery store and, first, it takes her 3 minutes to get out of the car and then another 3 minutes to walk 100 feet to the store and then, once inside the store she goes to about 1 mph??? I donno??? Is this a Venis/Mars thing??? B;~) |

She has to analyze, inventory, compare, speculate and weigh the benefits of every single thing, for herself, for you, for all her friends in their various categories of being, and for mankind in general. Then she has to cross-correlate the data as to color, flavor, price, comparison with other items and stores, and who she might want to tell all about it. Then you take ONE step down the aisle and look at the next item. Do NOT interrupt the process, or she'll have to start te whole store over again. And you'll be in for a storm of upset. Unfortunately, it slows them down quite a bit. Menz' peripheral vision is unfocused in shopping. It only speeds the walk up. Menz "side sight" is more focused in hunting, fishing, sports, truck (and car) buying, and watching "bouncing boobies" and "shapely bummies" pass by. This can be seen in a shopping mall - when menz patiently sit and observe in a food court, for example. |

And foraging includes noting what new stuff is there even if you don't need it now, what stuff is marked down and can be bought because it will store for when it's needed, where the store has re-arranged things you are going to need in future, so that when you do need them you can find them (they do that deliberately so you can't go straight there, it's in the how to run a store manual). Translate it from going out in the wild looking for food. Some of it won't be ready to harvest, some will, new trees will have popped up since you were last there, you need to remember waht your granny told you about what's good for what ails you and what's going to kill you. It takes time. When our new shopping centre opened down the road from me, I spent two days going round it, in and out of the shops, and I didn't buy anything. But when I wanted something, I knew where to go, where to park the car for the shortest trip and so on. And I'm not the only one. One child at school commented that her mother had gone to Bluewater and bought nothing, just like me. I explained, briefly, what was going on. Shopping isn't just buying, it's learning the shops. (One of my usuals has been closed for re-organising, and re-opened on Monday, but I'm not going in till tomorrow, because I have a money off voucher that doesn't apply until then - and it's driving me batty, not knowing what they have done and what they have new.) What I have figured out is that the P-Vine likes to be in the store so much that if her list has ketchup on it and also salad dressing on it that she will pick up the ketchup and walk past the salad dressing because it isn't *next* on the list which means criss-crossing the store several times so... ...I have taken to be her "runner"... That works fine... If something at the end of the list is way back down at the other end of the store where we started I'll volunteer to go back and get it... That gets me away from the madness and gives me a purpose... Plus, it allows me to crank up my walking speed which, in turn, makes me less tired... That zero to 1 MPH is tiresome... B~ |

It drives me mad when I have carefully chosen a till with a reasonable number of transactions and items to line up behind with my not very much, and I find that the person in front has a runner who keeps adding more and more to what seemed like a small quantity of goods. On the other hand I can walk through a produce shop or the butcher or the whole foods store quite happily, browse everything quickly and leave with only what we needed. I simply cannot abide the visual and auditory assault commonly known as a grocery store. Interesting comment about annoying music in the fabric store: Not around the Toronto area, at least not any place I've been. It's always inocuous and easy to ignore. Which is saying something because I am very sensitive to sound and distractable by music. If I can't focus on the task at hand I will leave rather than fight the noise; enter my sewing room as exhibit 1 that it's never happened at a fabric store. |

Or was this when both of you were already out? Have you ASKED her in an offhand way why she dawdles in stores? I never generalize about what 'womenz' do, because they ain't all the same. I have no problem when shopping with Rita, even though *I* probably do about 78.4593% of the grocery shopping myself. Sometime SHE is out and stops at one of 2-3 stores. She is pretty particular about produce, and often prefers to select it personally.... though I have done quite well in general. My ONLY problem is being given a list that is not specific enough, as she often wants ONLY certain brands or types of product and store X may not carry certain things. (We actually have about 4 major and 2-3 minor choices for grocery shopping... with 2-4 branches of each major, depending on the route.) Gee... I can't think of anything cute and clever to add to the joshing you are getting..... |
