So, if a situationm developed that you were offered a "last meal", what would it be? Mine would likely be Indian grub (chicken)or Thai food, possibly red curry.

Prob'ly wouldn't be too concerned about last meal if given time to reflect.

Even not given time to reflect, my experience and observations of people dying is that thoughts of food are generally not even on the bottom of list....Food is about living. Those who are dying are really not interested.

Not an easy decision for me; there are lots of foods I really like. But I could settle for a few of Kendall's lobsters, some sweet corn on the cob (no point in holding back on the salt), and a banana cream pie. Maybe a little Paul Maison (sp?) dry champagne with the entrée stuff, and definitely a decent cup of coffee to wash down the pie.

I was going to query the "26 ouncer", then I realised it's almost exactly the old UK 'standard' bottle. (26 2/3 fluid ounces)
One standard bottle was exactly 32 standard measures (of 1/6th of a gill)
Alternately, duty was calculated on a gallon of spirits, and a gallon (UK= 8 pints of 20 fluid ounces each) just happens to be 6 bottles.

I'd keep it simple, eat the kind of light meal I usually prefer...Vietnamese or Thai food with Jasmine tea. But I'd want some quiet time for reflection after that.

As it would be my last meal, there'd be no worries about calories or cholesterol etc. So please may I have home-made steak and kidney pie (pastry made with lard), shredded spring greens in butter, mashed spuds all drenched in the gravy, followed by bread and butter pudding with extra thick cream. Actually (confession time) we had this very meal yesterday for Sunday lunch. And I didn't die. Not yet anyway.

I do love custard (Bird's of course) Backwoodsman, but after the first course I felt too lazy to make any, so we opened the cream. This whole thread is doing absolutely nothing for my good intentions to try and lose some weight. There are so many delicious suggestions here, I might just work my way through the lot. At my age, I don't care a bit about calories really - I'm fat and I expect I always will be. (Puts out tongue in childish gesture of defiance) MLER!

If I were to include seafood, it would be fresh inshore Digby (Bay of Fundy) sea scallops - rolled in flour, fried in butter, with black pepper and fresh crusty bread.

Hard ta beat Bay of Fundy scallops. Matter of fact, I might change my mind on the lobster... well, gotta have at least one bug eh? Last winter, my Sobeys store had frozen "pieces" (Digby) for $5.99 a pound. I bought and cook a pack in marg with some canola oil fer ta get the heat up. Try it Ed. The result is a thick glaze and ya can get the scallops real brown without losin flavour. I went back and bought a few more... about 30 pounds.

I have had some good frozen Bay of Fundy scallops, gnu- but I bought them directly from a Digby fish plant. I have found the grocery store stuff to be of uneven quality- as I suspect the quality varies as storage conditions varies (as does the age). I have had some fairly good Northumberland Strait scallops also. I find the Georges Bank offshore scallops to be of lesser flavour. IMO, the Calico and smaller southern scallops to be flavourless- maybe why they are battered and wrapped in bacon to add flavour.

I will try your Sobeys suggestion (if they don't have any additives). The last time I checked The grocery stores the fish guy couldn't tell me if the scallops sold as "fresh" were actually fresh (aka recently landed) or previously frozen.

Never have liked it, wouldn't thank you for it and still find myself picking it out if it is in food.

My reasoning is that it wouldn't spoil my next meal and for that matter, wouldn't it be ironic to find out I don't mind the stuff after all?

In reality, fish chips and mushy peas, got to be from a chippy though. The one in our village cooks in dripping so we are (occasionally) spoilt.

Ed... Sobeys will tell you unless the guy really doesn't know (read, new guy). My fish guy at Sobeys tells me when things were delivered, where they came from, and can usually tell me fairly accurately when they were caught. "My guy" is the manager and he does the ordering. Each Sobeys manager does the ordering and fish, meat and produce managers also do most of the local sourcing. When my fish guy finds a deal on something and he knows it will sell, he orders a whack of it. He even tells me when stuff is coming on sale. Like jack smelts (round smelts).The scallop pieces are cull so ya gotta look em over fer size and note any freezer burn. Since Sobeys keeps a tight watch on temp (-19C maximum), I am confident of quality.

Oh, yeah. The lobster and clams are, fer me, best from Shediac Bay but I have told that story way too many times.

With frozen scallops,I am more concerned about conditions before they reach the store, as to taste-quiality. Most inshore boats bring the shucked catch to the fish plant daily, where it is packaged and frozen (if not to be delivered fresh). It may then hang around a freezer for some time before you buy it. Taste quality deteriotates with age (as opposed to healty rrelated quality). The colder the better for retaining taste. Many Japanese fishing boats freeze to -40 to keep taste quality (in tuna, for example). *s to offshore boats, there is a long period before the scallops reach the fish plant. By the time it gets to your plate, much of the flavour is missing.
Your fish guy may be an up front guy. But, few so- called fresh scallops are thrown out, as profit margins are closely monitored. If they aren't sold quickly after they arrive, I suspect storage conditions are not condusive to retaining. The sea- state flavour.

Agreed, Ed. I gave up buying "fresh" scallops for that reason and especially when they hit $14 a pound! Same deal with fresh lobster. Fresh at Sobeys means up to 4 days after delivery. I require any cooked bugs (Mum must have them bought cooked) to be two days max and, even then, I seldom buy them. I wants em cooked same day. I used to be able to buy Northumberland Straight scallops at 10AM that were suckin salt water at 3AM... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

To make it worse, at most of the grocery stores, they cook lobster with the elastic claw bands on - I can taste the rubber. Its a taste kinda like drinking stagnant bwatm water out of a garden hose on a hot day.

Gnu, a few years ago a food inspection worker (now retired) showed me a sample of some of the small warm water scallops (large count per pound, southern scallops - I believe from Florida) under a microscope. There were small translucent worms in the meat. He said "you don't see '2m, but they are in most of those cheaper southern scallops - and we don't find them in the cold water Atlantic sea scallops up here" That was enough for me - it turns my stomach each time I see them in the store.

As to cheese, I am finding many of the better known brands of Cheddar getting increasingly "waxy", much like the processed stuff. One brand I avoid because of that is Cracker Barrell. Some of the smaller brands don't this problem, such as Armstrong and local brands.
