My observation is, on Mudcat, interpretation of what was posted, and the reaction of many other posters, depends more on who posts it, (and who they battled previously), than what is being posted / said.

Anyone else have this observation / feeling?

I have noticed this, Ed. Some posters get nasty replies using corruptions of their Mudcat name as an insult. It's horribly like childish bullying in the playground. Their opinions from previous threads are flung in their faces, as if they've already been 'condemned' merely because of who they are. I think 'Be who you are and say what you feel' is a good motto. But one does have to be quite tough to come to Mudcat, and not be over-sensitive, as tempers run high and it doesn't do to get all prickly and cross. There seem to be a lot of old 'issues' going on, maybe over years. And some Mudcatters appear to hate the very 'sight' of eachother. (Figuratively speaking of course, as they've probably never met!)

Eliza, added to the difficulty to determjne who folks are, and where they are from (that sometimes is important to understanding the posted message) people attach other, (often less flattering) names to posters that often challenges me to figure out just who is being addressed. Added tk that ars a multitude of odd names added to "guest"and what seems to be other various Guests addressng each other Guests (possibly, that is, maybe there is only one confused "Guest", with many opposing views?).

No Eliza - because of what they say; some opinions run though several topics like Blackpool runs through rock.
It is quite often possible to guess what someone will say, on several subjects, before they say it, from what they have said before.

A solution, to save space and time, nmay be to give a number to these often repeated statements and counter arguments? Such as:statement #3234, to that, the response could be response #4325.

As to the "...phobia" thread, is there a name for a phobia, where one has a fear of posting to mudcat, because another poster may respond in a unflattering (if not somewhat rude) manner?

I try to imagine a nice country pub of the old type. You get a selection of people in there - regulars, visitors, the old bore in the corner. And always a group of vociferous tub-thumpers at the bar, getting hot and angry with eachother. In walks a chap (or chapess) and everyone knows exactly what they're going to sound off about. And maybe a rather fat old lady in the comfy chair by the log fire, enjoying her half of Adnam's. And it'll be the same the next evening... and the next... Rather delightful really!

Instead you try to discredit me with gross distortions of things I said often years ago.
And of course you can, because no-one will be going back to see what I really said.

Eliza, what if posters were only allowed to post in lyrics?
It may make a dispute more poetically interesting to the observer, those not directly involved?
Just a concept, not that I wish to "take anyone on" with that one.

Sorry Keith - no intention of allowing an argument between us to ruin somebody's thread
I believe this forum has been targeted by a number of racists and take their vile views from one thread to another - that is the only time I do what I have just put my hands up to.
I would apply the same to using the same people's names as a form of ridicule.
I have already warned one individual that I a preparing to have him removed from this forum if he continues with his racism.
I will not stand by and tolerate behaviour that would be illegal if it took place elsewhere other than from the safety of the social network - not without comment anyway.
End of an opinion - which isn't aimed at any particular individual

Oh dear. I wish I hadn't mentioned a banjo. But I absolutely adore banjo playing. My Irish mum told me her father was quite a good player. But he drank like a fish, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the notes.
Very good idea, posting in lyrics. But you'd get some Gaelic speakers posting stuff and we (well, I) wouldn't be able to understand.
Did I say I also adore melodeons? They make me think of Morris dancing, which I really love watching.
Using numbered responses reminds me of the Trappist monks joke. They all sit round, each in turn holding up a numbered card, which represents a joke, and all laugh silently. But one monk's number produces no reponse, except from the Abbot, who holds up a card saying 'We've heard that one!'.

Too many people fail to understand the practice of nicknaming. Maybe it is a particularly middle, upper-middle and upper class English thing. Indeed it may also be rather more a chaps' thing. Consider Sheridan's "School for Scandal".


The joke thing actually is the other way round - monks, closed community - jokes given numbers because so often heard. Incomer gives a new number - monks fall about laughing. Explanation "We haven't heard that one before". Women and jokes, eh?

Racism? Most of those frequently accused of racism here do genuinely appear to be racist. Of course, there are some reverse racists too.
